Relaxation at its best!
This was the first time on Lummi Island, so wasn’t sure what to expect. I am happy to say we (two adults, a 21-month old and a dog) were not disappointed!
**Lodging** Grandma’s Place was a delight. It offered excellent access to the water and great views of Mt. Baker when the weather permitted. The house was modest and comfortable (the bedrooms are out of date, but the beds were comfortable; kitchen is updated). They have all the amenities you need. In fact, I encourage anyone who plans to stay here to connect with the owner first to see if it is already provided. There was plenty of room to spread out both in- and outside. We were there during a week in August and enjoyed an almost deserted beach and neighborhood. It picked up on the weekend but still wasn’t too bad. My two year old loved the beach and water. A large rock stairway off to the side of the yard provides access to the beach so my toddler wasn’t able to run right into the water. We had to move a lot of the décor on the tables out of reach but found the house to be safe (and quiet) for kiddos. Lastly, there was plenty of room in the backyard to store our kayaks for easy launching (tip: it takes about six hours to kayak around Lummi Island). I would also say it was a pleasure interacting with the owners. They were attentive and gracious hosts who made the experience stress-free. All in all, we enjoyed our stay very much and plan to book it again next summer and possibly during a long weekend in the winter.
**Island** The thing I hate most about vacations is the time and energy it takes to get somewhere before you can relax. This was not the case with Lummi Island. We live in Sammamish and were at the house on a Tuesday within 90 min. The Ferry is small but speedy (just a seven minute ride one way) and the house was less than 10 minutes from the dock. It is a good idea to do your grocery shopping before you arrive since the market is well stocked but small. The library is open T/Th. We were a bit disappointed that the only way to walk around the island was on the small road, which isn’t really relaxing to me. We did not hike the trail to the top of the island, but will do that next time. We tried the café and the food was excellent! We missed Willow’s Lodge because there was a 20 name wait list so make reservations early! In summary, the island was a relaxing, low-maintenance getaway and we will definitely come here again.
Families with Young Children,
Owner's Response: It is nice to know that guests had a good time. The reason it is called Grandma's Beach House is because of the furniture in the bedrooms which is reminiscent of yesteryear. If you wish to dine at the famous "Willows" you must have a reservation and do it early. Let me know and I will help you on that one. Virginia
