About Lee Howard

My father was from Maine. We would come to Maine for summer vacations. Our favorite Aunt had a cottage on a small island. We would stay there with many of our cousins. Just had such great Maine memories had to get a place for my family. Built the Chalet in 1994 with a friend from Wisconsin who I grew up with. He brought his crew and constructed the Chalet on Land my grandfather owned. Traveled to Maine from Madison, Wisconsin with my family for many summers. Now the kids grown up they still come to Chalet for summer vacations.

Lee Howard purchased this chalet in 1994

Why Lee Howard chose Wayne

I built the Chalet on land my grandfather used to pasture his cattle on in the 1920's. He would cut timber and use it to build our relative's houses. In addition, he would cut ice out from the lake and he stored it using saw dust in the ice house at his farm in Leeds, Maine. He would sell the ice in the summer months to cool milk.

What makes this chalet unique

Quiet and peaceful setting with great scenery. MANY ACTIVITIES ON SITE. FULL SIZE BASKETBALL COURT & TENNIS COURT, GAME ROOM, VOLLEY BALL, TETHER BALL, HORSESHOES, SWIMMING, WITH WATER SLIDE OFF PIER DOCK FLOAT, CAMP FIRE BY WATER WITH PLENTY OF FIREWOOD, KIDS PLAYGROUND, TREE FORT WITH WALK AROUND DECK, LOFT & ELECTRIC LIGHTS!!!

Beautiful place, needs TLC

  • 2 of 5

Recently stayed w 20 family members ranging in age from 15 to 82.

After traveling for 15 hours we arrived to a filthy dirty house. Spent the first 3 hours of vacation cleaning the just the kitchen. Countertops, floor, stove covered in dust and grease. Pots and pans all needed to be cleaned before use. Viking stove awesome but dirty. Commercial waffle makers awesome but dirty and tripped electrical fuses.

Humidity in the house was unbearable. We sweated for 2 days. Commercial fans and dehumidifier inadequate. The 3 bedrooms with window AC units were comfortable. The rest of us just sweated. Ceiling fans in several rooms didn't work. The large fan in main area just blew a tremendous amount a dust around.

Dining Furniture was dirty.

Outside grill has NEVER been cleaned. Years of grease and dirt.

Deck chairs covered in black mold. Children's playground covered in mold. Deck was growing mold and other plant life. Trees completely obstructed view of lake on upper deck.

Sport court fine. Volleyball court covered in overgrown weeds.

Pontoon boat filthy dirty. Another cleaning project! Broke down twice. Had to self paddle back to dock. Was fixed but lost 1.5 days and no refund.

Three TV's but only one hooked to cable.

BR's were clean. Towels of good quality but musty. Beds comfortable.

Overall, not worth the money. Not worth 1/2 the money. Too bad, it's a beautiful spot.

Owner's Response: The review has several false and misleading criticisms. Although we encourage notification of something not to a guests liking. This review just isn't an honest review. Please read reviews over several years and you will have a clear picture of how things really are. With that will try to address each point of review. 1.The house has a professional cleaning crew clean after each rental. I seriously doubt the characterization had to clean entire house & kitchen. 2.The kitchen stove, floors, counter tops, pans are all cleaned thoroughly and given extra attention because that's where cooking activity & messes occur. 3. The waffle makers probably have Pam on cooking plates. That is something that we normally don't clean because it is heated up before use and any Pam or residue on cooking plates is sterilized. 4. Yes the circuit breaker for kitchen wall outlets tripped. They called me to complain of this. I asked what they had plugged in they said 2 waffle makers, 2 coffee makers, & double toaster. Yes with that overloading a 20 amp circuit breaker did what it is designed for trip so as to avoid a wiring fire. 5. Yes humidity in summer probably did cause them to sweat? Be glad it's hot in summer!!! Two dehumidifiers are located in lower level walkout. If allowed to operate will do the job. The flexible drain hose was kinked on one and couldn't drain. Caused by renters moving it. 6. All ceiling fans in bedrooms dining rooms worked fine before this group arrived and after they departed. Fans are controlled by wall switches. SOME have a pull chain. They pulled the chain thus turning it off manually & this disables wall switch. Nothing wrong with fans. OPERATOR ERROR!!! 7.The large floor fan in Great Room provides air movement adequately. Fan has 3 speeds. We usually operate it on low or medium to provide adequate air movement. There is absolutely no dust being blown around from carpeted floor and leather furniture. 8.We provide two large oak dining tables on main floor inside. Tables are clean. 9.we provide large Weber grill & gas grill. Would agree their is debris in bottom of grill. Cooking grates are what you would expect. Grill brush provided. 10.Deck hairs are clean. Yes could have black marks from a pine tree dropping needles on them. Cedar deck has green staining from pollen. It isn't mold. 11.We do have a view of dock & lake AND WON'T CUT OUR TREES. TOTALLY RIDICULOUS COMPLAINT. 12.New 30HP Honda on outboard. Apparently blew fuse twice. Fixed in hours.

Excellent Colby College Grad Weekend Experience!

  • 5 of 5

The chalet in Wayne was the perfect setting for our mini-family reunion centered around our daughter's May 2014 graduation from Colby College. With 15 of us representing four families (ages 10-55), the chalet's expansive layout provided lots of lovely gathering spaces, yet privacy when needed. With two full kitchens and three refrigerators, we were able to easily feed our large group. Nearby downtown Winthrop had everything needed to supplement our stay--a Hannafords grocery store, a pharmacy, a yummy ice cream shop and cute diners. The location was reasonably central to the Portland airport, shopping in Freeport, golfing in Belgrade Lakes and Colby College where we participated in fun family graduation festivities like the Lobster Bake and the Family Ball. Although the weather was still a bit crisp in late May, we enjoyed kayaking on Wilson Pond, a pick up game of basketball on the sport court and a BBQ on the deck.

As importantly, the home was very clean and well maintained with comfy beds and a fully stocked kitchen. The owner, Lee, was a pleasure to work with and accommodated our needs with regard to the Colby graduation (including making sure it was ready for occupancy prior to Memorial Day weekend). Our guests/extended family all commented on what a wonderful Maine experience it was! Hope to have the opportunity to return again.

Fair to Good

  • 2 of 5

This home offers a great location and vistas of a great vista of a lake. Plenty of square feet for a large family and friends. There is plenty of activities especially if you rent the pontoon boat for another $900 for the week. HOWEVER, the home was continuously damp with water and dampness everywhere. As a result the owner has placed huge fans thru out the first floor and lower level of the unit. The fans helped but when the fans were turned on you could not carry on a normal conversation. I would suggest that the owner spend less on the basketball and tennis court and more $$$$$ on the water and mold situation ..i would also suggest a humidifier install by a professional air conditioning HVAC person. If this situation was corrected along with some routine maintenance i would recommend this place.

Owner's Response: I am not sure why this review was sent 87 days after this guests stayed at the Chalet. This is the first time I have heard any complaint like this. I believe the water on floor in lower laundry room is what the complaint is about. We discovered the main floor laundry room washer had a leak in the pump. Water would then drip down to lower laundry room tile floor. After this June 29 group departed is when this leak was discovered and leaking washing machine was replaced. Unfortunately things like this happen and is beyond our control. To avoid moisture problems in fully exposed lower level. We run a de-humidifier in lower laundry room and another one by fireplace in lower level. I believe this group unplugged the de-humidifiers thinking that was the cause of water on laundry room floor. In fact it was from washing machine on main floor as previously mentioned. We have never experienced any mold problems whatsoever in the house or lower level. We used cedar tongue & groove which is best in a high humidity area such as the lower level. The large fans are on the main floor in great room. They have 3 speeds. Apparently they were operated on high and would agree it would be difficult to talk and hear across the large great room with 2 fans on high. The fans are 30 inches in diameter. If operated on low they are quiet and not a problem. We had a group that stayed this season who had allergies to just about everything as they described it. We installed three window air-conditioners on main floor to try an accommodate their special needs. We heard absolutely no concerns about the house from them. In this guests review I think the main complaint was we don't have central air-conditioning. It is unfortunate that you didn't enjoy your stay this summer. Apparently you didn't like the full size basketball court with tennis also. I can understand that if your family are not outdoor people. Other families that have been repeat customers have been very happy with the added basketball court. Thank you for your comment. We will strive to improve. Lee Howard

Great Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a great week in Maine thanks to Lee and Mary and Mary Howard. This was our second year renting the house. We had all of our kids, spouses, grandchildren and my 90 year old Mom - 19 of us. The house is a perfect fit for us - especially the lower level where the little ones could play and watch videos and give the adults a break. The kitchen has everything you could want or need in the way of utensils and appliances. Lee added a full length basketball court this year and we all enjoyed it. The pontoon boat is the highlight for our family. We take it out at least once a day with all the kids so that they can swim and dive into the lake and even do a little fishing. The Howard's have done everything possible to make our stays fun and memorable

Amazing lake front location

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 23 recently spent a week at the chalet and had a great time. While the house was large enough to sleep all of us, we might have benefited from another bathroom or two, due to our large group size. The best part about our stay at the chalet was the water access. We spent hours swimming, sliding into the water off the dock, kayaking, and boating on the pontoon boat. One of our boys even caught a fish right off the dock. Our group played basketball, tennis, and went for a few runs during the week. We also made a lot of use of the ping pong table. We also enjoyed the nearby hike to Mt. Pisgah and the lobster rolls from Tubby's. Lastly, the owner Lee was easy to work with and very responsive. We had a couple maintenance issues (and a power outage) and Lee and his caretaker were quick to help us. I would recommend this rental for large groups looking for a down to Earth, comfortable, spacious lake side home that has excellent water access.

Family/friends Reunion Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Every summer we plan a vacation with as many of our friends and family as possible. This year we decided to try a lake in Maine rather than the ocean at Cape Cod for our destination. After emails back and forth from our various locations around the country, the vote was for the beautiful chalet on Wilson's Pond for our week's escape. We all gathered there in July. There were 19 of us, varying in age from 70 to 4. The chalet functioned beautifully for that many people of different ages and interests. Our airline pilot transitioned to pontoon boat captain for our leisurely cruises around the lake and, in spite of our many adventures, our doctor was not needed. All 8 children headed right for the waterslide and never tired of splashing into the lake with enthusiastic cries. The house was wonderfully equipped for cooking, sports, playground adventures, or a quiet place to get away and we never felt crowded or bored. A large group hiked nearby Mount Pisgah and we ventured out for an ice cream and groceries a few times, but felt no need to leave our beautiful location. By weeks end we had all tried kayaking, the kids swimming skills had improved considerably, and we never wanted to leave. The vote was unanimous to do it again next year!
