Historic Sites: Charlottesville:
Deer Beach Lodge is centrally located so you can enjoy the historic sites of Virginia. Take time to visit the historic Charlottesville area. The City was founded in 1762 is named after Princess Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of King George III of England. The area has an incredibly rich history that draws millions of visitors every year with three presidental homesteads in the area: Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, Ashlawn-Highlands, home of James Monroe, and Montpelier, home of James Madison. Also located in Charlottesville is the renowned University of Virginia.
Historic Sites: Richmond and Williamsburg:
If you travel each from Deer Beach Lodge in roughly an hour you will come to Richmond, VA. Enjoy a visit to the historic state capital of Virginia. Just a short dirve past Richmond is Colonial Williamsburg. Take the time to walk the same streets once walked by George Washinton and Thomas Jefferson. The Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg stretches over 301 acres, and includes 88 original 18th-century structures. Hundreds of houses, shops and public outbuildings are reconstructed on their original foundations.
Wine Tours:
Vineyards in this region include Keswick Vineyards at the historic Edgewood estate. Barboursville Vineyards, established in 1976 by the largest family-held winemaking enterprise in Italy, is located near the Barboursville Ruins. The ruins were once a fine residence designed by Thomas Jefferson for his friend James Barbour, who served as a Virginia governor, U.S. senator and secretary of war. The Kluge Estate Winery & Vineyard, situated at the foot of Carter's Mountain, was established in 1999 and is already producing some excellent wines. And don't forget to visit Lake Anna Winery which is just 15 minutes.
