It doesn't get much better than watching the gulf waters from the deck, the fish swim under the deck and the dolphins swim by! We went to sleep with the sound of the surf and woke up to the same sound! Everyone in our group had the time of their lives, walking the beach, playing in the sand and the gulf and/or fishing off the beach. My favorite part was we never had to "pack up" to go to the beach! The week went by way too fast!
The Beach Shak was as described, has tons of character and met our needs. The person who communicated with us was helpful, upbeat and made certain we had the information we needed. I would love to spend another week or two at the Beach Shak!
My one and only complaint will be addressed first, because it's not something I hold the home owners responsible for (their maintenance crew should have either fixed the problem or alerted the owners). The main bedroom ac was not working. That's it... my only complaint :-)
Now for my raves! The house is beyond quaint. Think of it as roughing it... but not too rough. Coming from a Loew's snob... if I can fall head over heels in love with this sweet little slice of paradise, anyone can! The furniture is mismatched and rustic, the kitchen and it's utensils are too and the bathroom is small. And every single bit of it only adds to the simple, quiet charm that the house itself has to offer. No where will you find a better view, or be lulled to sleep by the waves rocking you at night. And NO WHERE will you be blessed enough to hear only the waves no matter where you are sitting inside the house. With all of the stress and rush that I deal with in my day-to-day life (and often times during my vacations as well), being able to sit on a deck that offers an unobstructed, panoramic view of nothing but shoreline, sipping red wine and having the shells play their music for me as the waves washed over them... it was just the therapy this girl needed.
Julie, you are an A+ doll and I thank you so much for every email. Your little Beach Shack is simply perfect in my book and I can not wait to come back!
My family and I stayed here for only two days in August and we sure had fun gathering sea shells, exploring the island in rental golf carts and lots and lots of swimming. The cottage was just as described and has almost everything you could need for lots of family fun either inside or out. The owner is great to work with and very flexible in the number of days we could stay and answered all of my questions with great detail. We would recommend this cottage to others and tell them to stay longer than we did.
There is nothing like this house!! I've been staying at the Beach Shak for a few years now and it is my favorite get away!! To wake up in the morning, have coffee on the deck and watch manatee, dolphins and a variety of fish swimming around and under the deck ... there is no better way to start a day and watching the amazing sunsets are a perfect ending to the day. It is truly a slice of paradise and I am already looking forward to my next visit. The location is so special and beautiful, it is truly amazing!
I don't know what the prior reviewer was expecting, but there were no surprises and we had the best vacation ever. It was myself, my husband, another couple, my nine year old and my nineteen year old---everyone had a great time and a comfortable stay. Internet is available even though we did not use it--just call owner and she will be happy to tell you where the adapter is that plugs into your computer. The hot water heater even quit working on a Sunday and the owner called us right back and sent a repairman out as soon as possible--remember you are staying on an island only accessible by boat. The house is old, but that adds to the charm. The house was clean and it only took us maybe twenty minutes the night before to clean the downstairs bathroom area. The house does lean towards the ocean, but I can't imagine this being an issue unless you get drunk and then you might roll right out onto the porch. We loved this place and no where would you find a place where you can stand or fish off the front porch and feel like you are on a boat. This house even rocks a little if the surf picks up. If you have a good sense of adventure and you want to step back in time to "Old Florida" where the beaches are never crowded, the neighbors are always friendly, the wildlife viewing is awesome and sunsets priceless, then this is the place for you and your family too. Can't wait to do it again! I would also recommend renting a boat from Gasparilla Marina if you can swing it---we did and did not have to wait on a ferry. Don't be turned off by the last review, keep an open mind and a sense of adventure and you'll probably have the best vacation ever as well.
Our family of 6 had an enjoyable stay. The house was nice, but a bit more rustic than the photos online portray. The view is beautiful out the front- all you see is water! I do admit that I am probably quite critical as a reviewer as I am a VRBO owner myself who puts a lot of time and pride in my own rental to make it nice for my guests. The location is wonderful, right on the beach. The cottage is clean and very quaint with it's sloping floors towards the water and curtained doors. The kitchen has a mismatch of dishes, glasses & pans. The bathroom is very basic and very old fashioned. Although I do realize that stuff breaks, it was kind of annoying having to take the lid of the tank off every time you flushed to push down the flapper so the toilet didn't run continuously. The second bathroom is only accessible by going outside and entering through the locked door to the bathroom on the beach level. You are expected to clean this bathroom yourself when you leave as the cleaning service fee does not cover this. There was no internet available -contrary to what the listing said. This was one of the reasons why we picked this rental and was somewhat of a problem for my college age kids who were supposed to be emailing work back to college during our stay. We were able to find some unprotected signals from other beach houses while standing out on the beach. Also- the water taxi requests a week reservation and is $10/person both ways which really adds up if you have a large family. Parking is $3/day at the Marina. Having no reservation for the taxi was almost a vacation disaster for us, after calling we were able to get to the pier quickly before the driver had another obligation. Even if we had tried to manage this better we would not have been able since we were not informed about this or anything else with adequate lead time even though the taxi service has informed the owner multiple times of that need. Little surprises like this are not what you want to encounter on a relaxing vacation. Extra expenses are much better tolerated when you know about them before you are locked in with a reservation. We did not receive any information at all from the owner regarding our stay until 3 days before departure from home, including keys - something that is quite frustrating for individuals who like to plan. When information was requested via the email on the website it was initially poorly communicated and about a rental in another city.
