Guestbook comments from the manager

"We spent a week here at t his lovely place. Quiet, serene and gorgeous. Do not miss out on champagne Pond. Check it out the first or second day of your stay.

..I loved listening to the birds and the waves. We had many lovely meals out on the patio. Joanie has thought of every possible thing to make the stay a very comfortable one. This place is just beautiful. We hung out here a lot, we were so comfortable. to top it off the moon was full so we had ambient light for the lovely tropical nights and we would walk over to the beach!. Enjoy and aloha!" - Sonya and Larry Thompson

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5
I have stayed at the turtle suite at Kapoho Joes a few times now and I always love it. It is a small, quaint place to relax and listen to the ocean as you fall asleep. I loved the owner's, Art and Joan. They made me feel so comfortable and when I left I felt like I was leaving family.

My favorite part is waking up to the breeze coming through the windows with fresh air, then walking out and sitting on the little porch with a nice cup of coffee. If you want to relax, this is the place to do it!

So cute, so clean and so comfortable!
I would recommend to anyone!

good place to stay near water -confirm details prior to stay

  • 3 of 5
We spent 3 nights at the Turtle Suite – enjoying the quite spot, nice neighbors, Volcanoes National Park, restaurants 8 miles away, scenic drives and beaches. We arrived on a weekend when the owners reported that they would be off the island but I didn’t think this would mean not having access to the listed snorkel gear, bikes, kayak, or the possible golf cart. I noticed another reviewer seemed to have bikes and snorkel gear in place during the owner’s absence, so not sure if our weekend was an oversight but I recommend confirming access to these listed items (as needed) if they are out of town.
The bed has a very soft pillow top, so if that’s to your comfort then you will be happy. We ended up sleeping on the futon and were glad that was on option. We brought our own coffee, but surprisingly there was just one paper filter, which we ended up carefully re-using it three times (it’s a basket-size filter).
The internet/router was out during our stay, which made getting directions and looking up places a challenge in this rural area. We spent time wondering around trying to connect to the Sprint network on our phones when needed. The owner’s assistant told me she’d call the owner and cat-sitter but I didn’t hear back until we were packing up to leave a day and half later. We felt a little abandoned as to the lack of multiple items and service that are reported on the listing. The assistance told me that in general the wireless is not reliable so keep that in mind.
If you are driving without reliable GPS, please see directions to the house from picking up the key in Pohoa: Follow 132/Pohoha/Kapoho Rd. south 8 miles. Half-way veer sharp left with the highway, which also seems to go straight. Follow 132/Pohoha/Kapoho Rd. to end of road, turn right, then take first left into Kopana Community Beach – the street sign only says “KCB” and you don’t see the gate from here. After going through gate with the pass provided with the key, take first right, then first left. Follow road to the end, take last driveway/road on left side and it’s the first house on the left.
I recommend Turtle Suite as a great place to stay on the Puna coast, but would ask for better communication and follow up from the owner about access to listed services.

Owner's Response: Aloha and thank you for staying with us. Unfortunately, the owners had an emergency situation and had to leave for the mainland during the stay. The kayak was available and was outside on the lawn, the snorkel gear and other water equipment was also available in a bin inside the laundry room. Having just gone through a hurricane, the phone lines and internet were still being worked on at the time, but are now up and running. As the ad says, the golf card may be used, when available. - The Management

An enjoyable week in Kapoho

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I stayed in the Turtle Suite about a year and a half ago for 3 nights. This time we returned for a full week. It just so happened that the owners were on the mainland while we were there so we didn't have contact with them until the last day. They had everything ready for us and there wasn't anything we would have had to ask them for anyway. Cooking without a stove is a bit of a challenge, but with the large electric fry pan and the grill, plus the rice cooker we were able to do quite well. I found taking along some foil for wrapping vegetables in worked very well on the grill while the meat was cooking. The sound of the waves was very pleasant and the table on the patio was nice. We did have a quite a bit of rain this year so we used the outside table less than I would have liked. We did snorkel in both the Kapoho Ponds and Champagne Ponds. Unfortunately the volcano's lava was not visible from the Pahoa side this year. As volcanos will do, it changed direction. We love the Sunday Markets, both in Pahoa and on the highway toward Hilo. The new Friday market across the road from KBC was a nice addition. Everyone was so friendly and fruit prices so much more reasonable than in the stores. Fresh Mahi Mahi from the fish market in Pahoa was delicious. We enjoyed dinner in Pahoa at Ning's Thai one night and it was very good, with nice size portions. It is a laid back town so relax and don't expect a waiter/waitress to appear the instant you walk in. This is getting quite long, but we did have a good stay. My only suggestion is that the futon is not very comfortable for sitting on. It would not keep me from returning.

Great place near the tidepools

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I stayed in the Turtle Suite for 2 nights and would do so again. The place had everything we needed and was in walking/biking/very short drive to the Champagne Ponds and the Kapoho tidepools. The tidepools are incredible for snorkeling and the location of the suite is convenient for exploring the nearby coastline stretched out to Kalapana and we really loved the area. The suite was comfortable and had everything we needed.

Bright and Cheery

  • 4 of 5
Loved our 2 night stay. The area is very different from other places on the island. Loved to pools for swimming and the atmosphere of Pahoia and the Kapoho ponds. The place was nice and bright. It was clean and comfortable. It was good to have the snorkeling gear and sand shoes available. Nice relaxing time

Waves crashing!

Perfect getaway for 2-3 people. Good phone, internet, DISH TV, small fridge, microwave, and griddle(no stove) but nice gas BBQ grill. Bikes, golf cart, snorkeling equipment are there also. Short ride north & south to tidal pools. Go to Uncle's in Kapalana on Wed. eve for all types of food vendors, drinks, bands. Plenty of lava, old & new to see. Thank you Art & Joanie for your hospitality! Mahalo!

This is a beautiful rural area with lush green vegetation, rain forests, horse ranches and papaya farms. You will pass through the tunnel of trees and Lava Tree Park after going through quaint, colorful old Pahoa Town. There are thermally heated fresh and sea water ponds throughout Kapoho Beach Lots. Only about one mile away are the marine preserve tide pools for snorkeling. You can fish along our shoreline, or hike the lava fields and lava tubes. See Volcanoes National Park only 29 miles away and lava flows within 15 minutes. Don't miss the scenic 'Red Road' and Kalapana highway with some of the most scenic Hawaiian views you will ever see. Swim with the dolphins at 'clothing optional' Kehena Beach. Visit black sand beaches, waterfalls, orchid farms and botanical gardens. You can even golf on top of a volcano! You can surf about 4 mile away at Isaac Hale Park and Pohoiki, where the fishermen launch their boats. If you can only stay a week, we will show you the highlights.

Other Activities: hot ponds, lava flow viewing, black sand beach
