This new, beautifully hand-crafted home is located on the southeastern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and nestled in the Gandoca Manzanillo National Wildlife and Marine Refuge. It sits just 50 meters from the shoreline of one of the most remote and unspoiled beaches in Costa Rica. The tropical rainforest of the Talamanca Mountains serves as the home's backdrop.
This home is not a 'lodge or camp' house unlike the few rentals available in the refuge. It is the landowner's personal vacation home and was built to enjoy all the comforts of home with a oceanfront setting. Fall asleep listening to the gentle waves of the Caribbean Sea and wake to the chatter of monkeys in the yard. Enjoy meals on the huge patio and decks with the sight and sound of the sea as your entertainment.
This is a two-level structure level. For small families the two-bedroom upper level will accommodate four guests. For a large family or group, both levels will give extra privacy for up to 8 persons. Since the home is located in the protected Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife and Marine Refuge there are no motorized vehicles in the refuge to disturb you or wildlife.
Guests, however, may drive to the home to bring in luggage and other provisions. If the creek at the entrance of the refuge is too high to drive across (rarely) arrangements will be made to get your luggage to and from the house.
The home is a beautiful, scenic drive through the Braulio National Park. Past spectacular waterfalls, mountains, and rainforest areas. It takes approximately four hours from the San Jose Juan Santamarie International Airport in San Jose to reach Manzanillo.

My friends and I had a great time in this beautiful home right on the beach! We can't think of one negative thing to say, except it wasn't enough time to experience all there was to offer.
The house was very clean and as comfortable as our own. The caretakers were friendly and helpful. Fishing, rafting and private dinner parties were arranged by them without difficulty or much expense. We would feel fortunate to be able to return to this home in the future!
Wonderful, secluded location more than offsets the relatively simple accommodations. By all means splurge on having the local ladies cook for you. The sumptuous breakfasts prepared by "China" and "Mami" made our stay. Given the location, cooking for yourself would involve hauling groceries a few hundred meters across the jungly path u must take to arrive at the house. I HIGHLY recommend having these two super nice ladies shop, cook, and clean up the kitchen for you, and then just relax and enjoy great local dishes, fresh tropical fruit, and any fish, shrimp, poultry, etc dish you want, prepared in the distinctive and local favors. You won't regret it!!! Location is well into the jungle, allowing u easy access to secluded and picturesque beaches, rocky beach lookouts, animal watching, etc. not great swimming or body/boogie boarding. You may have to walk or drive a little for that. House is a bit on the rustic side, as described by the owner, but has all the basics. Upstairs where the kitchen 2 bedrooms and living areas are is where you'll end up hanging out. Downstairs bedrooms and bathroom are functional but not geared toward hanging out. Upstairs balcony is a nice spot to hang at sunrise, listen to the ocean or the animal life, sip your coffee and read....bring flashlights, bug repellent, water shoes and you'll be fine. You will end up crossing the "creek" a lot to get in and out, and there a few rocks involved, making it a little tricky at high tide or especially at night. I will definitely be back, and will be looking to have China and Mami's services included for sure!!!
We had a great time at the house! The water is warm and calm and monkeys and sloths can be seen all around. One of our favorite pastimes was sitting on the large porch, sipping delicious local coffee and watching for animals.
Chena, the manager, was very helpful from start to finish. She assisted in everything from getting us help loading in luggage and groceries from the other side of the creek when we arrived, making delicious meals, and organizing day trips. One of my favorite trips was guided by Chena's cousin, Tino - we hiked from the house to Punto Mona and learned a lot about the native plants and animals as well as enjoyed a swim in a lagoon with a boatride back!
Also great day trip was to the Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo - while there were not any jaguars there while were there, there were tons of different animals, from owls, to cats, to sloths, to anteaters. Not only are they doing good work but the guides are super knowledgeable and you can go into the monkey house and interact with them!
There is a family that lives on the property - Claudia does an excellent job at any laundry or cleaning needs you have. We had her come in twice for a fresh up - it's affordable and nice to have a clean floor as you will be barefoot most of the time.
One thing I would note is that the creek was never dry when we were there. And, the water was often mid-shin or knee high. While this is not really a big deal, for your comfort I would advise bringing one more pair of shoes than you think you should because things do not dry very quickly in the forest.
Would definitely stay here again, thank you for sharing, Kathy!
We had so much fun!!! 3 adults and 2 twelve year old boys with miles and miles of jungle = you can't go wrong! We loved the house, the people of Manzanillo, and the beaches. The caretakers kids (next door) were wonderful--they took us on a jungle trail to a cave! Our kids played with them the whole 3 days and had a blast--even tho they spoke different languages, they still managed to play water games and explore the jungle trails together. The house was great for the 5 of us. The only complaint was that the internet didn't work. I was expecting this, however, since I have stayed in Manzanillo before and internet is spotty all over Costa Rica. We just went to Maxi's and used their internet when we needed to make a Skype call or check email (but their internet was hit or miss, too). We loved this jungle house, all the people of Manzanillo, and can't wait to go back for a longer stay!
We just returned from this property and had a great time! We had nine people in our group and there was plenty of room. We were prepared for an "adventurous" vacation and that's what we got. It is beautiful and a lot to do to keep us busy every day! Our favorite part was the Jungle Tour by Tino ( a local guide) and the cooking done by the local ladies; Mama and Chena.
This is not a luxurious vacation but an experience you cannot get at a "resort". You will put up with a few inconviences and bugs but you get to experience a lot more of the culture.
A few tips:
use local cooks
bring bug spray
we had a large party of 12, everyone had plenty of room, no problems usin the facilities. we were all very comfortable, and really no one had a single complaint.
the main front deck is were we all pretty much hung out if not out and about. we had howler monkeys, toucans and sloths right in the yard next to the house just about everyday. the home is right on a trail to explore the jungle. if ya want to seee monkeys, you will see them in abundance here.
Chena the manager was great, checked in everyday, and lined us up with anything we requested. we did the dolphin tour, deep sea fishing, surf fishing, hiking, chillin on the beach. just a great time all around. we have never been disappointed in costa rica.
this is a jungle home, in a nature preserve, packin in your luggage across the creek to the property for us just added to the adventure, we arrived at night, so was extra fun for our party.
i dont know how anyone could not be satisfied with this property. we all hated leavin and cant wait to gett back. thank you Kathy for a excellent vacation, enjoyed by all.
The view of the ocean is amazing! The house is comfortable and well stocked (i.e. blender, cd player, books, fridge, stove, microwave, toaster oven. Lots of air flow keeps it cool and the views from the porch are sooo relaxing. Lots of wildlife around the house. Howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, Morpho butterflys. Love this house! Stay there twice a year and never consider looking anywhere else. A must see!
