We must echo the positive reviews of those who have come before. "Heliconia" casita is easily accessed from the coastal highway (4x4 vehicle best) and perfectly located to take advantage of the the fine restaurants of Ojochal - the culinary capital of Costa Rica. It's a perfect mid-way point to day trip south to Sierpe and the Osa and north to Manuel Antonio and points in between. Our hosts, Laurice and Dennis, took us on an orientation tour of the immediate area on arrival which opened up all sorts of possibilities for exploration during our week's stay.
The house is comfortable and the kitchen well equipped for simple meal preparation. We enjoyed sitting on our patio in the evening watching darkness descend on our mountain view and awaiting the cooling evening offshore breeze to take away the heat of the day.
We fell into a rhythm of exploring the area in the morning (Sierpe is a must) and enjoying the glorious saltwater pool and fabulous gardens in the heat of the afternoon. The "sails" above and around the pool assured shade was always possible.
Although the casita sits on the same gloriously landscaped lot as the owners' home, our privacy was never compromised. The casita is physically set apart. Laurice and Dennis are very conscious of respecting personal space, but make themselves available to answer any questions and offer advice. When we did come together. we throughly enjoyed our conversations, particularly about the history of Ojochal. Learning about the development of this unique village is a Costa Rican exploration in and of itself.
Looking for paradise? Well look no further. My wife and I stayed in this lovely guest house for two memorable weeks recently. The house, the gardens and the pool area are simply beautiful. We enjoy gardening, so to be surrounded by the lushness and colour of all the tropical plants, shrubs and trees was wonderful. Laurice and Dennis are terrific hosts. From the first evening we met them, we knew that we were going to be very well looked after. They kindly offered to show us around Ojochal and the surroundings the first morning to help us get our bearings. A few days later, Dennis said that he’d gladly pick up a fresh loaf of bread at the local bakery. Delicious. To top it off, Laurice provided freshly picked plantains and bananas from her garden for us to enjoy … and enjoy them we did. And then there were the birds. Most mornings we woke up to a chorus of toucans in the trees around us. One day, it was a bit more like a noisy alarm clock when about 30 green parrots showed up at 5:45 and had a real squawk fest. We loved it. The variety of birds in Costa Rica is truly amazing. There are plenty of things to see and do in the surrounding area and you can keep as busy as you’d like to be with different activities. We enjoyed the horseback riding, swimming and terrific meals at Nauyaca Falls, the beaches in the area, particularly Playa Ballena, the day we spent on the tour to Corcovado National Park, the Wildlife Sanctuary at Villas Alturas, the waterfall at Uvita, hiking at Hacienda Baru, exploring the tunnels at Playa Ventanas, and a visit to Manuel Antonio National Park. And of course, at the end of a busy day, you can always come back “home” and enjoy the exotic fragrance of the ylang ylang tree while you have a dip in the pool. There are any number of restaurants in the neighbourhood to choose from. We tend to prepare many of our own meals and found the grocery selection at one of the BM stores in Uvita to be very adequate. All in all, we had such a good time here. We have absolutely no reservations about highly recommending a stay in this very well-maintained home. Thank you Dennis and Laurice for a truly memorable time.
My husband and I were able to stay at the guesthouse for two weeks in early March. The house was perfect for the two of us. It is very well maintained, clean and furnished very nicely. The outside patio was great for a quiet breakfast, or dinner - or just enjoying the surrounding gardens. The last day of our stay we even saw a troop of howler monkeys travel from tree to tree across the back yard. A dip in the saline pool was a refreshing way to spend some of the hot afternoons. The owners were very helpful since they are quite familiar with the area. The location of the guesthouse is just off the main highway, so you don't have to drive on the "local" roads much at all. Ojochal is only about a 45 minute drive from Sierpe to the south and Quepos to the north - making it an easy drive to so many attractions! It is also a great location with many nearby beaches to explore and gourmet restaurants to enjoy.
We really enjoyed our stay - and would love to go back and stay here again in the (near!!) future.
We had a wonderful stay at the guesthouse in Ojochal. Everything is so lush! The garden beautiful, the saline pool lovely and refreshing. The owners are very helpful with information, respect your privacy but are very accommodating.
Our favourite beach was Playa Ventanas and our kayak trip on the Sierpe river a MUST do activity while in the area.
On our next visit to the area we would use it again.
My wife and I booked this house for a week in December and found it to be exactly as described on VRBO. The house is well designed for comfort and privacy and had everything we needed. We really enjoyed the stunning views of the mountains and wildlife during our outdoor breakfest. The gardens and the pool area are very nice and well kept, we found ourselves dipping in the pool and relaxing under the sun sails daily. With some directions and hand drawn maps from the owners we did alot of exploring almost everyday and we still did not see everything we wanted. Oh well I guess we will just have to book it again.
Thanks for a great vacation
It was a wonderful spot for bird watching, close to numerous wonderful restaurants, beaches and wildlife reserves. It is just a short drive from the mangroves of Terraba-Sierpe, which is a must. The owners were very accommodating and provided useful information about the area. The apartment itself is beautiful, private and well-designed. Highly recommended!
