Below is a list of some of our favorite things to do in and around Hermann. If that is not enough, search the web, you will find something to keep you busy.
Wineries - Hermannhoff Winery and Stone Hill Winery are a short distance from the cottage and five more wineries are a short drive away.
Restaurants - Hermann has a number of casual restaurants as well as fine dining at the Vintage Restaurant at Stone Hill Winery. We recommend the Rivers Edge Restaurant in Fredericksburg MO for fun casual dining and The Cottage Restaurant and Gallery for fresh hand-grafted dishes.
Shops - Many quaint antique and specialty shops line 1st St., 4th St. and Market St.
Biking - The Katy Trail is located just across the Missouri River and a new bridge has been built with a bike lane for direct access. For more serious riders the rolling hills that surround Hermann are favorites.
Museums - Deutschheim State Historic Site and German School Museum are only a few block from the cottage.
Golf - Loutre Shore Country Club is three miles away offering a semi private 9 hole course.
Fishing - The Missouri and Gasconade Rivers are favorite fishing spot of locals and visitors alike, as are the many lakes dotting the area.
Canoing & Kayaking - The upper and middle Gasconade are some of the best floating areas in Missouri without the crowd of the Maramec. But, if you want the party of the Maramec it is only an hour away.
Hunting - There are plenty of hunting grounds in the area.
Hiking - Many state and national parks surround Hermann.
Wineries - Besides the wineries mentioned above, eleven more are within a short drive. You can spend a couple days traveling the beautiful countryside sampling Missouri's best wines.

In 2000 my wife and I were hiking in the Mark Twain National Forest when we came upon a bluff and looked out over the Missouri River. Just across the river was a quaint little town looking like it came out of a post card, so we decided to check it out. It was Hermann, and we fell in love. We came back over and over again, visiting at least three times a year always dreaming of living there.
Since real life prohibited us from live in Hermann we decided to purchased a small place where we could spend our weekends. In 2007, that idea became the Apfelbaum Cottage. We are very proud of our 2nd home, as quaint as it is, and love to share it (and Hermann) with others. Welcome!
The Owner purchased this house in 2007
Wine, hiking, biking, shopping...and more wine!
Your maticulous and artistic (and loving)renovation provided a most comfortable and relazing fall break for us. The cottage is delightful. We admire your commitment to preservation. Wolfie loved it too. We are always grateful for a place that will occommodate him.
After an initial mix-up, which was taken care of very quickly, we completely enjoyed our stay at the Apfelbaum Cottage for our 30th anniversary get away. The pictures are a true description of the place. If we return to Hermann, we would stay here again.
We stayed at the cottage this past weekend, there were a few issues regarding our stay - the biggest issue was the sofa sleeper and how uncomfortable it was. The mattress was horrible - thin, lumpy, sunk in the middle, and wires poking at us. It was so bad we had to switch nights sleeping on it so we could get one good night of sleep. Also, the pillows were absolutely gross (for both beds) stained and yellowed (we wished we'd brought our own). Other issues we had while we were there - the ceiling fan in the bedroom didn't work, the rugs in the bathroom were dirty and the coffee maker took 45 minutes to make a pot of coffee. I can over look the last few issues but not the condition of the sofa sleeper mattress and pillows. I'm requesting a refund on the additional fees we were charged for the use of the sofa sleeper. Had I known how bad the sofa sleeper was I would not have booked the cottage. I sent two emails and left a voice message and didn't receive a response.
I stayed in the Apfelbaum Cottage for four days and loved every minute of it! Not only was it immaculate and charming, it was within easy walking distance to all of Hermann's downtown attractions. The bed was comfortable, the shower was hot, the cottage was well stocked, and the owner was really nice! The house is in a residential neighborhood, and I awoke each morning to a rooster crowing. While you're there, be sure to visit the local bakery for fresh sourdough bread, enjoy homemade chocolates of all sorts at the Chocolate Box, and take a few hours to check out local history at the Deutschheim State Historic Site and the Old German School Museum.
Perfect for a long weekend getaway! Cute, cozy cottage with a fenced-in yard for the fuzzy family members; perfect for resting between antiquing, hiking, and walking the riverbank. We enjoyed it, loved that it is pet-friendly (too few vacation rentals are!) and would love to visit again sometime!
This is the perfect little house. Clean, quiet, convenient with everything you would need. Much better than a more expensive B&B. You have the whole place to yourself!. We will definitely be back!
We had a great time staying at the cottage, very cozy and comfortable with everything you needed. It was centrally located for walking to just about everything in town. The Katy trail is just gorgeous in the area between Rhineland and Portland. Definately on our list of places to stay again.
