CHARMING, COMFORTABLE 'QUIETSIDE RETREAT'

Bass Harbor House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms + den, 1 1/2 baths, sleeps 6 comfortably

Get away to our comfortable home in Bass Harbor with everything you need for a comfortable retreat near Acadia National Park. Our home features a living area with down-stuffed chairs and comfy sofa. The kitchen is fully equipped with utensils for cooking and dining in and has a dishwasher, microwave, propane range, full-sized refrigerator and dining table for up to six. There is a den, complete with board games, puzzles, popular fiction and information on the many activities awaiting you on MDI. Rounding out the first floor are 2 bedrooms, both with queen sized, pillow-topped beds, large-capacity laundry, one full bath and one half bath. Upstairs is a sky-lit loft with DVD-equipped monitor and bunk beds - a great place for the kids to hang out! Enjoy 'creative' badminton and croquet in the yard!

Our house is on a private road, shared with only 5 other houses, 1/4 mile from food shopping and stop for the L. L. Bean Island Hopper bus for car- free access to Acadia, Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor.

Relax, enjoy Maine - life as it should be!

House amenities: The house was built for year-round living and is completely furnished with modern and vintage furniture, sheets, towels, pillows and blankets. The kitchen is fully equipped with all dishes, glassware, cutlery, pots, pans and utensils. There is a stereo, with CD player and MP3 connection, as well as a weather band radio to check on the forecast when planning your next day's activities. Enjoy 'movie night' on the LCD monitor with built-in DVD player in the loft! Also provided are a charcoal grill, picnic table and chairs, lawn chairs, badminton and croquet sets, though the yard games are more for the adventurous and creative than those interested in serious play, as the yard slopes a bit. There are 4 bikes - men's 27' hybrid, 2 boys' bikes and a women's 3-speed. Bring your helmets for an quick trip into Bass Harbor, scenic rides on the Hio Trail to Seawall and Wonderland or loading on the Island hopper bus for exploring the carriage trails of Acadia National Park.

Location: The house is located on a 2 acre site, though less than a mile from Bass Harbor, with seafood restaurant overlooking the harbor, Rich's lobster pound, the Bass Harbor head light and Swan's Island Ferry. It is also just 3 miles from the charming village of Southwest Harbor with restaurants, gourmet and super markets, specialty wine shop, ice cream parlor, kayak rental, community center and ferry to the Cranberry Islands. Also in SWH is The Claremont Hotel, grand dame of The Quiet Side and the perfect setting for end of day libation at the dock house over looking Somes Sound.

Kids activities: For the youngsters, at the house there are boxed games - Monopoly, Boggle and, our favorite, Jenga! We often try to squeeze in a round of badminton and, for the truly hearty, there is a croquet set. Okay - both of these are more for the creative than the serious as the yard slopes and is a bit lumpy, but it fits our level of play! Nearby there is a playground at the the Tremont School, 1/2 mile down Flat Iron Road. On the way to Southwest Harbor is the easy hike to Wonderland, with rocks for clambering over and tidal pools to explore. In Southwest Harbor, there are weekly children's activities at the library, complete with dedicated reading room. Across the street from the library is another school playground with jungle gyms and basketball court. There is also an oceanarium at the Southwest Harbor Coast Guard station with educational programs.

About Earl Marsh

I am an architect and live with my wife in Philadelphia. We bought this house to enjoy time away form the city when our sons where young. After many years of hiking, biking, swimming and badminton in the Summer, we are offering it for rent as we are not able to be there as much as we used to and want to be!

Earl Marsh purchased this house in 2002

Why Earl Marsh chose Bass Harbor

The house is truly a place to 'get away' (just not too far away!). By choice we do not have a land line phone or TV cable, though did relent and buy a monitor with DVD player for family movie night. Even through the tough 'teen years', we all have fond memories of evenings playing Boggle, Pictionary, Guesstures and, yes, Simpson's Jeopary!

What makes this house unique

The house was built as a full-time residence for year-round living. If anything, it is even better in Winter than Summer!

Perfect HomeAway!

  • 5 of 5
The most comfortable, best-furnished Holiday-"Appartement" I´ve ever stayed in! I can only confirm everything written above. Owner was most helpful and patient, especially as there occurred difficulties with money-transfer from Germany.
The house is absolute quiet, clean and charming. We had breakfast in the garden every day, took the bikes for rides along the coast, hiked throughout the islands etc, etc. It was just great to come back to "our" home in the evenings. We would love to come again if it wasn´t more than 3000 miles from Germany...

Perfect Getaway

Really cute, comfortable little house, with a surprising amount of sleeping space and comfortable living area. The kitchen is better equipped than mine at home. No internet or TV, so I had to wait to see the finale of Breaking Bad!

Off the beaten path

  • 5 of 5
This vacation rental is exactly as the pictures show. It was peaceful, well kept and very comfortable. The house has an open living and dining area which was great for family dinners and hanging out when the sun goes down. Even though the home as not internet or cable, there was so much to do in the area and the weather was perfect, we didn't even realize we were without them.
We spent every day exploring and relazing. Kayaking and swimming in Great Long Pond and Echo Lake, searching for quietside hidden beaches, Seawall, Ship Harbor Trail, Bass Harbor and the lighthouse, Bernard... there was SO MUCH to do and it was nice to always come back to a peaceful, off the beaten path retreat. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in your home!! Kelli, the caretaker was wonderful. She saved the day whenever we needed her...always with a smile! The owners have made many renovations to the home that make it a comfortable, easy to clean rental. Thank you for sharing your lovely vacation home with us!!

Lovely, comfortable home away from home

  • 5 of 5
This rental was the perfect home away from home for our family during our one-week visit to Acadia. The house is adorable, and the furnishings are up-to-date, clean, bright, and comfortable. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need, and the house has a great collection of guide books, games, and dvds. Wild roses bloom in the yard, and we woke every morning to the song of a wide variety of birds.

Bass Harbor is easily accessible to Southwest Harbor's amenities, including a playground, and to swimming at Echo Lake, which makes it ideal for families with young children. Staying on the "quiet side" of the island means you have more time to enjoy the park and the beauty of the island.

The owners of the house are extremely pleasant and easy to work with. When we thought we might need to switch the week of our rental, they made every effort to accomodate us, calling other renters to see if anyone would be willing to swap weeks. We received our security deposit back just a few days after our departure. The goodwill of the owners is evident too in the reasonableness of the rental fee. Last summer we stayed at another island rental for the same weekly price, but found it out-of-date, less conviently located and much less comfortable than this house. They could charge more, but they don't, which says alot about them.

All in all, our stay at the house was wonderful, and I can say in all honesty that we didn't want to leave!

. All the ameneties of home; clean, comfy and well stocked. While tucked away on a quiet private road, it's very accessible to town, restaurants,Bar Habor, the sea, and all the wonders of Acadia. Lots of helpful maps, guidebooks,& brochures on hand to give newcomers "the scoop" on great hikes, bike&equipment rentals, day trips, and where to find the best lobster dinners. A most enoyable stay. All we could've asked for was more time!
