House amenities:
The house was built for year-round living and is completely furnished with modern and vintage furniture, sheets, towels, pillows and blankets. The kitchen is fully equipped with all dishes, glassware, cutlery, pots, pans and utensils. There is a stereo, with CD player and MP3 connection, as well as a weather band radio to check on the forecast when planning your next day's activities. Also provided are a charcoal grill, picnic table and chairs, lawn chairs, badminton and croquet sets, though the yard games are more for the adventurous and creative than those interested in serious play, as the yard slopes a bit. There are 4 bikes - men's 27' hybrid, 2 boys' bikes and a women's 3-speed. Bring your helmets for an quick trip into Bass Harbor, scenic rides on the Hio Trail to Seawall and Wonderland or loading on the Island hopper bus for exploring the carriage trails of Acadia National Park..
Location:
The house is located on a 2 acre site, though less than a mile from Bass Harbor, with seafood restaurant overlooking the harbor, Rich's lobster pound, the Bass Harbor head light and Swan's Island Ferry. It is also just 3 miles from the charming village of Southwest Harbor with restaurants, gourmet and super markets, specialty wine shop, ice cream parlor, kayak rental, community center and ferry to the Cranberry Islands. Also in SWH is The Claremont Hotel, grand dame of The Quiet Side and the perfect setting for end of day libation at the dock house over looking Somes Sound.
Kids activities:
For the youngsters, there is a playground at the the Tremont School, 1/2 mile down Flat Iron Road. On the way to Southwest Harbor is the easy hike to Wonderland, with rocks for clambering over and tidal pools to explore. In Southwest Harbor, there are weekly children's activities at the library, complete with dedicated reading room. Across the street from the library is another school playground with jungle gyms and basketball court. There is also an oceanarium at the Coast Guard station with educational programs.
