This beach front cottage offers the beautiful sunsets of the summer and the clean sandy beaches of Western Lake Michigan. Our 3 bedroom 900 square foot cottage has been the owners residence for the past 15 years and 2008 is the first year offered to our guests. Situated on 5/8 of an acre this heavily shaded property offers open space of lawn to play baseball or croquet, or to just sit in the arbor, drink a cold lemonade and enjoy the fabulous country wild flower gardens. The stairs to the beach are fifty feet away where you can situate yourself on the expansive private beach area (patrolled on weekends to keep strangers off), or just place your beach chairs on the public beach side. If you need a break from the kids, we offer a babysitting service so you can enjoy one of the fine local restaurants, or have a Certified Red Cross Life Guard watch your children at the beach while you enjoy a nap on our hammock in the shaded, breezy back yard. Both services available at a nominal charge.

If you have stayed in Union Pier before, we are located at the public beach access! The only way that you can stay closer to the Lake is to the rent the cottage next door to us! They do not subscribe to this service, so just ask me for their phone number...It is all about the beach in Union Pier. The beaches never close on this side of the Lake because of pollution or high bacteria count. Many Chicagoans make their way to Union Pier to train for The Chicago Triathlon, where it is easy to swim a mile without bumping into anyone and bike one of the designated bike routes through Three Oaks and cycle 25 miles without navigating around automobiles or roller bladders...Additionally it is worth making the drive to Warren Dunes State Park and Mt Baldy to view some of the nicest and largest sand dunes in the United States.

Additional information about rental rates

  • We are pet friendly but do charge a cleaning fee of $100 if you bring your dog.
  • Unlike most properties rented in this area, we do not charge extra to clean the unit upon your departure nor are you required to wash the bed linens and towels prior to your departure. During the summer months we only rent on a weekly basis from Friday to Friday. Off Peak, during the Fall months we rent on a minimum 2 night stay.
  • - During the Fall months you may check in as early as you would like and can stay til dusk on your last day.

  • The bathroom has a walkin European style shower installed in 2008 and is very nice. During the summer months most guests use the family size (100square feet) outdoor shower that offers plenty of seclusion to shower in the buff. The shower is constructed of redwood, soft to the feet and absolutely no harsh chemicals to stand in as compared to treated lumber, and is surrounded in fragrant smelling flowering clematis and has a nice bench to sit on. Of course the shower has hot and cold water.

  • The upstairs bedroom has a beautiful view of the beach and lake. There is also a game size table in the bedroom. The upstairs bedroom is large enough to accommodate sleeping bags or air mattress if 2 or 3 children wanted to sleep in a bedroom with adults. Additionally there is a washer and dryer located in the closet in the upstairs bedroom. The two first floor bedrooms have a mens size dresser to store your clothes. We also stock the bedrooms with two terry cloth bath robes so you can lounge in them in the morning or use them to go to the outdoor showers. Our bedroom linens, bathroom towels and beach towels are new and fresh...we have not stocked this unit with our 'old stuff', and want your visit to be of the same experience as finer hotel.

Notes: The kitchen and bathroom is fully stocked and equipped to cook indoors or outdoors. All the linens, bath towels and beach towels and beach chairs are supplied. We also have a beach umbrella with SPF50 factor. Additionally the home is equipped with Comcast Cable and High speed Internet access with a wireless router. We also have an Home Ipod so you can listen to and charge your Ipod in the house, or just listen to AM/FM radio. There is a flat panel LCD television with DVD player in the living room. You do not need a telephone calling card to make outgoing telephone calls - Any local or continental USA long distance calls are free. As far as outdoor cooking, we have a Weber Grill and a larger propane grill. The propane and charcoal briquettes, lighter fluid is available for your stay. We also supply firewood for two campfires, but due to local ordinances we ask that you have your campfires after sunset and at the beach, not in the backyard.

We had a terrific week's stay at the Union Pier Cottage. The grounds were beautiful, the cottage was very clean and in great shape, the stairs to the beach were a few yards away! It was hot the week we stayed - in the 90's - but the breeze off the lake and the ceiling fans kept it comfortable. John was very helpful, and provided us with beach chairs and a beach umbrella, as well as firewood, tinder, and matches for a bonfire at the beach. The kitchen was well stocked with everything from pots and pans to saran wrap and aluminum foil. All we needed to bring was food! The loft was a really neat space - and the washer and dryer in the closet was really helpful! There was a gas grill and a charcoal grill and we grilled almost every night. The sunsets were beautiful. I would recommend this property very highly! We absolutely loved it.

My family and I stayed at the Union Pier Cottage in July, 2009 and we had a fantastic vacation. There are actually two areas to access the beach. One access area is about 50 feet from the front door and the other is a block away. The cottage is air-conditioned and includes tv, wireless access, and all of the amenities. The owner is also very accommodating and includes beach toys (for little ones), beach towels, umbrella, etc. It is in a great location and perfect for families with little kids.

Overall great. Our family really appreciated all the assorted towels, the chairs for the beach and the use of the washer and dryer.

The cottage was pretty well stocked. One minor thing was that we ran out of toilet paper and the beach umbrellas was damaged and useless..

Very clean, beautiful large deck in the back with a great family size table and 6 chairs. 2 grills (gas and charcoal).
Bikes for our use.

Beautiful grounds, many flowers, hammock.

Owner did provide good customer service.

Cottage not accessible for wheelchair bound/general handicap. No ramp to the beach, or landings.

We visited Indiana, where we went to a dairy farm and winery tour. Chicago was close by as well.

There were a few family restaurants near to the cottage.

Perfect Weekend destination!

A group of college friends rented this cottage to celebrate a buddy's birthday in the fall. The description provided was accurate, but one major feature is missing: we arrived Friday night and it was pretty dark but you could hear the waves crashing if you opened the windows (perfect white noise!). And that's not the best part, I slept in the top floor's bedroom to awaken the next morning to the most glorious sight from the room's large window...an almost panoramic view of Lake Michigan! We hated to leave when it was time and John was the coolest owner with very lenient requirements. The cottage was supplied with premium bedding and even bath robes (Nautica, Ralph Lauren, etc). I'm sure we'll be back!
