About Diana Varney

In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other house from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. Every detail was thought out while we built Hale Mauka, from the deep soaking tub with a rainforest view to large windows in every room. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our home with guest from around the world! Welcome to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona..

Beautiful, serene, adventure

  • 5 of 5

We stayed four nights and right from the turn into the driveway we were in heaven. Every detail is tended to, the property has so many beautiful touches. The house is wonderfully stocked and was as comfortable of a stay as we have ever had anywhere. Coffee on the front Lanai in the mornings with the sounds of the rainforest was perfect. Our day trips were long and busy and it was so nice to come back and enjoy the quiet peacefulness of Hale Mauka. Would love to come back. Mahalo for sharing your home.

Absolutely Lovely! When can we come back!!

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about this wonderful spot. Completely spotless, beautiful setting, gorgeous lanais, artistically designed and furnished, warm fireplace, ridiculously comfy beds, super convenient and well stocked kitchen (muffin pans!). And the bathtub!! From the minute we walked in, we were saying "we have to come back and stay longer". We just loved it. Thank you so much!!

Tropical, Private, & Cozy

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for four nights while visiting Volcanoes NP and the location was perfect. The house is even prettier in person than it is in the photos. In fact, I really didn't want to leave. The home is surrounded by jungle and is very quiet and private. The wood stove and soaking tub were amenities that made our stay extra special. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. The beach towels and sand toys for the kids were really nice. We traveled with a 3 and 5 year old and the house was perfect. I wouldn't even think about staying somewhere else.

Great, great place!

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as shown in the pictures. Very quiet and relaxing. We stayed here for 3 nights and was very pleased with our experience. The owners are very easy to work with and we would highly recommend to anyone wanting to stay in the Volcano area. Hilo is 20 miles away and Volcano National Park is only 5 minutes away.

Big Island Adventure

  • 5 of 5

We came to Hawaii to spend some time with our son who was there stationed with the US navy. Since he had never escaped Oahu, one of our destinations was the Big Island, and we were trying to figure out where to stay without having to relocate half way through our visit. Hale Mauka turned out to be an excellent choice. The cottage was beautiful, comfortable, and generously appointed with anything we might need for our stay. We were rarely there during the day as we were constantly on the go---visiting pretty much all of the island except the far NW area. With some careful planning we were able to pack plenty of sightseeing and activities in as we traveled to Volcano National Park, the east coast and the waterfalls, the south point, city of refuge and the snorkeling beaches, Kona area and even the saddleback road and the areas of the Parker ranch. Twice we took the short drive back into Volcano park to see the glow of the volcano in the dark because it was so convenient to our location. Evenings and mornings were quite cool and moist, (it is a rain forest at a higher elevation after all) but we figured out the wood stove and it made for cozy evenings---great for tossing a pizza in the oven or making popcorn. Had a wonderful time and would stay again.

Wonderful rental!!!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a special place! Just a few minutes from VNP, we visited the park multiple times each day we stayed. Quiet and relaxing. It is convenient to restaurants and some shopping. Also not too far a drive into Hilo and the sights on the eastern side of the island (tide pools! beaches!). The inside is well appointed and very clean. Our family loved the selection of congas/bongos and other musical instruments on hand, as well as the extensive DVD/VHS collection. We had a wonderful stay here and I'd highly recommend it.
