Designers own completely renovated year-round getaway cottage on a quiet country road. The sun filled one-level, 2 bedroom, 2 full bath, house is situated on over 3 acres of open fields which provide sublime vistas of the surrounding protected farmland and forest. Enjoy the amazing sunsets as you relax on the large deck overlooking a meadow and meandering creek. In the warmer months, cook dinner on the charcoal BBQ grill and dine alfresco under the wisteria-covered pergola. In the winter, sit by the fireplace in the great room and relax from a day of fun in the snow. As evening approaches, drive 8 minutes to the thriving town of Hudson, pick up your houseguests at the Amtrak station, and head out for a dinner at one of many wonderful restaurants.
The great room, with cedar walls and vaulted ceiling, has 12 large windows and a glass door that opens out to the deck. In the summer/spring with all the windows open wide, and screens in place, the room becomes an elegant screened-in porch. This room also serves as the dining area, with a large, round slate table that easily sits 6 to 8. The daybed, situated in a corner of windows, easily converts to a twin bed.
One who loves to cook created the kitchen. It contains a stainless steel refrigerator and dishwasher, a Viking gas range and range-hood, stainless steel shelves and an antique butcher block island. A coffee maker, toaster, and all utensils and cookware necessary to cook a gourmet meal are provided. There is dishware and silverware service for 10. In the warmer months, four superb farm stands are within a 5-minute drive.
In the living room, there is a full size couch, a large coffee table, and two matching chairs. There is an antique Japanese tansu that holds board games and additional storage.
The master bedroom has a queen size bed, bedside tables and reading lights, a full hanging closet and antique Japanese tansu for clothing storage. A glass door leads out to the back deck. The contemporary en suite master bath has limestone floors and a large soaking tub.
The guest bedroom has a twin trundle bed (which converts to either two twins or a queen), a full hanging closet for clothes, and is just around the corner from the full guest bath in the hall.
The deck has a table with four chairs, two Adirondack chairs with footrests and two wood chaises with cushions.
The house is 2 hours from NYC, 10 minutes from the Taconic Parkway.
The Amtrak train trip from New York’s Penn Station to Hudson is exactly 2 hours.
We stayed here with our 2-year-old daughter and, while other reviewers have commented on how beautifully decorated, peaceful and well-situated the house is (all very true), it also has some nice features for families. The bedrooms are set far enough away from the great room that grownups can stay up and watch a movie after the kids go to bed. And the master bath means you won't wake up your kids by sneaking to the bathroom in the middle of the night! All important considerations! Plus a good supply of children's books, toys and games. Overall, a wonderful experience and we would love to come back.
This review is long overdue. I have had the joy of staying at this cottage twice in 2012, once in April and again in October. The property is in a tranquil, peaceful location and yet less than a 10 minute drive to downtown Hudson. The home is modern, airy, and well-maintained. I love to cook, and the kitchen here is well-stocked and was fun to cook in. The back deck is spacious and comfortable, and although we didn't use the grill, it would've been the perfect spot for a BBQ. Arne was a pleasure to speak with and was very helpful throughout planning. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a getaway from NYC, with the comforts of a modern home. Thanks Arne, for everything!
I rented this cottage for a girls' getaway over Mother's Day weekend, and my friends and I were rewarded with a beautiful, serene, clean, and completely stocked home. Upon our arrival we were greeted with the sensational aroma of lilacs from the enormous lilac bush along the front walkway. That was followed by spending our first two hours on the back deck overlooking a gently flowing stream, sipping wine, of course. This was the perfect start to our weekend. The kitchen has everything you would want and too many gourmet touches to even mention. The business transactions with the owners were excellent and our damage deposit was returned as quickly as one could expect. I am a frequent vacation home renter, and I highly recommend this rental.
Owners have excellent taste. Wonderful property. Look forward to exploring all 4 seasons from their great place.
We totally enjoyed our long weekend visit to the Hudson Valley and we particularly enjoyed our stay in this home. My husband and I chose this home because of the wonderful pictures on VRBO and the proximity to a wedding that we were attending in nearby Livingston. In the midst of a busy weekend of wedding activities, we found the house to be incredibly peaceful and welcoming. The decor is eclectic and beautiful. I found myself jotting down ideas for our own home. Why didn't I think of multiple and large, simply framed photographs or prints for a long hallway? The symmetrical placement of the pictures, the simplicity of the exactly matching frames, and the flowing eye appeal perfectly tied the bedroom area to the living areas. Unique design elements were evident throughout the house. We loved just being in the house, but we also enjoyed the proximity to many interesting villages. We visited Hudson, Woodstock, and Red Hook to name a few. To perfectly complete our stay, we went out to enjoy the front porch early one morning and saw eight deer standing near twenty wild turkeys in the field across the road. How fun!
My family stayed at this beautiful and well-maintained home for two weeks in August and we had a truly restful getaway. The house more than exceeded our expectations which were high based on the on-line photos and description. Its furnishings have a hint of whimsy and a laid-back mid-century feel (although you do have to be prepared for some pieces of taxidermy). There is plenty of warm hardwood and nice carpet throughout the house and many nice pieces of art on the walls. It’s a pleasure to cook in the well-stocked kitchen. There are all the pots, pans, and utensils you need and an excellent stove and dishwasher plus a number of interesting cookbooks. When in the kitchen, you’re connected to the living room and great room because of the open plan layout. All of the seating in the house is comfortable and arranged so there is good reading light nearby. The great room is a special, inviting place with light spilling in from three sides all day long; the views of the countryside from these windows (and, really, the others in the house) are lovely. Outside, the deck and backyard with a hammock strung between two shady trees are great places to hang out. The house is in an excellent location. When you’re in the house you feel like you’re far away in the quiet countryside, but when you need to get in the car to get supplies, you’re only 10-15 minutes from Hudson and about 5 minutes away from the Hannaford supermarket; also, there are excellent farm stands very short drives from the house. Arne was a great host, very accommodating of our requests for schedule adjustments and quick to respond to questions that we emailed him once we were at the house. This is a wonderful vacation home and we look forward to returning.
