The Mangy Moose offers a sugar-sand bottomed lake area, shallow for 50-60 yards. Quiet and private, this is one of only a few places on Lake Mitchell or Lake Cadillac that does not have a busy road running right behind the property. The cottage is located on a private cul-de-sac with an additional lot buffering it from the property behind.
Well maintained and immaculate inside offering a floor to ceiling field stone wood-burning fireplace, open living room and dining room featuring entire wall of windows overlooking beautiful Lake Mitchell! Air conditioning is not necessary as the lake breezes and ceiling fans are prevalent. Four bedrooms and four bathrooms, each tastefully decorated, featuring high quality bedding and luxurious linens.
Master bedroom is located upstairs w/king size bed; master bath features a large walk-in terrazzo tiled and jetted shower as well as a heated floor; second and third bedrooms are downstairs each featuring a queen size bed and private bathrooms with showers; fourth bedroom is located upstairs and offers a bathroom with a tub and shower. The bedroom sleeps eight with one queen bed, 2 double bed/futons and 2 twin bunks.

The MANGY MOOSE CLUBHOUSE (Optional Rental $350 total for the week) is a finished 2 story area above a professionally-converted, detached 5 stall garage, and is GREAT for kids or adults of all ages! The Clubhouse is heated by a gas burning woodstove and furnished but does not have running water, nor a bathroom. Lake Mitchell is 2580 acres in size and is connected to Lake Cadillac by a navigable canal, combining over 3700 acres of all-sports water fun! Many casual restaurants and eateries shore up to both lakes, offering docking for dining and/or drinks. Ice cream shops, party stores, and gas docks are also directly available by watercraft.
Like to hike or mountain bike? You will be surrounded by the Manistee National Forest boasting six-hundred thousand acres of pristine wooded wonderland! The Big Manistee, Little Manistee and Pine River (the fastest moving river in Michigan) are only minutes away. Fish the Tippy Dam, providing world class salmon, steelhead and trout opportunities. On a larger scale, the dunes of Lake Michigan located in Manistee are just a short drive away.
Winter activities abound! Cadillac is also the host site of the North American Snowmobile Festival. Snowmobile trails are accessible right from the front yard. Access these trails from Lake Mitchell, and you can sled directly onto the Lake from the front of the cottage. Downhill skiing at Caberfae is 15 minutes away, and Crystal is 35 minutes from the cottage. Cross Country ski in the surrounding woods or directly onto the lake. Excellent ice fishing can be had right in front of the cottage. Or, simply sit back and enjoy the quiet over a cup of hot chocolate and a crackling fire from your cozy abode!

John or Laurie purchased this lodge in 1998

The Moose Lodge worked out really well for us. We all had our own bedroom and bath and we made good use of the deck. When we ate there, that's where we were. We did lots of side trips to places like Sleeping Bear and the wineries. The weather really cooperated too.
We also went twice to breakfast to a new place in Cadillac in the restored old train station called "After 26". It is partially staffed by people with disabilities. The after 26 refers to the age when they leave the "system" and can't get anymore training or help. They are open for breakfast and lunch. The food was good and the restaurant itself is nice, a really good restoration.
I had a large group of 20-something year olds who absolutely loved staying here! We loved the house and the clubhouse with all the games. Also, a group went out ice fishing as well. We skied at nearby Caberfae Peaks, which was really nice and affordable. We all imagined that this cottage would be wonderful in the summer as well. It was really nice to have 4 bathrooms. The only downfalls were that the kitchen is kind of small and there was no place to store extra food that we brought (all the cupboards are filled with cookware). Additionally, the hot tub had too many chemicals (which was an accident I'm sure- we forgot to check the pH ourselves before getting in), but it left our bathing suits bleached and our skin raw after just 15 minutes of use. Other than those two things- we thoroughly enjoyed the home!
We're really happy we chose this. Not only is it beautiful inside, extremely large & comfortable for our family. You see the lake view from all the windows. The deck was perfect w/2 large tables & chairs to eat meals, relax. An enormous fire pit for 12 or more. We kayaked, brought paddles boards. Played yard games. & had fun all week.
Lake was warm, fun to play in daily. We recommended to friends. A Wonderful Vacation for us :-) Know it will be enjoyed by everyone. Beds were comfortable. Hardly had time to play games in clubhouse. Would be great for rainy days.
My family and I rented this lodge for a weekend getaway to celebrate my birthday, the end of summer, and all things good. I had this vision in mind of a relaxing weekend where everyone can do their own thing and getting out of your pajamas was optional. The Mangy Moose met all my expectations and more! Everything was top notch and everyone had an incredible weekend. We definitely want to do this again! Thank you!
My family and I rented the Mangy Moose for a week, as a gift to my Grandmother for her 80th birthday! Laurie was great to work with, answered any questions we had, and offered lots of information on places to go and things to do! This house is AMAZING! It is beautifully decorated, and has everything you could ever need, we only left once, to take a day trip to Leland, aside from that one trip, we stayed at the house and enjoyed everything Laurie and John have made available to their guests. Lake Mitchell is great for kayaking, and boating, the hot tub was a great way to relax at the end of the night! We had many fires, and roasted lots of marshmallows, while enjoying the peaceful lake at night. The beds are amazingly comfortable, with gorgeous linens, and tastefully decorated! We will definitely be back, and we're already looking forward to it! Thank you, Laurie and John, for allowing us to rent your amazing home, we made lots of great memories, and enjoyed being able to surprise Grandma for her 80th!
My eight girlfriends and I thoroughly enjoyed our wonderful stay here for 3 days the weekend of May 16th. Laurie & John went above & beyond making sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed for truly one of the most memorable stays at a lodging I've ever had... and there have been many! There was plenty of room to spread out and to sleep and having 4 bathrooms was just what 9 girls needed! Everything you needed for cooking & utensils was supplied in the kitchen, we only needed to bring our own food & beverages. Such a blissful time - from soaking in the hot tub, relaxing on the deck with GORGEOUS views of the lake, cooking on the grill, taking leisurely walks around the woods nearby & campground down the road, to just sitting around & relaxing in the well-appointed, comfortable furniture and surroundings indoors! A local massage therapist, named Hilda, was available to be hired for each of us to have a massage, too - have to say it was the best massage I've had in a very looong time. Outdoors was SO beautiful there. If the weather was warmer we would have been swimming in the lake and definitely on the water trampoline!... next time! Every moment we felt truly pampered and comfortable! A couple miles into town there are many things to do. Even though we stayed at the home for most of the duration (really didn't need to even leave... we had everything we needed there! :) ), we did enjoy celebrating a birthday at the Clam Lake Brewery one night for an outing - wonderful beverages and our server was very attentive there! :) Overall, a 'wonderful, relaxing and totally worth every penny weekend' was had by all! Thank you, again, Laurie & John! We will be back! :)
Our family stayed in the Cottage while we were in town for a wedding. Such a wonderful time. The home was clean, well kept and in excellent working order. The views were amazing, watching the moon over the lake while in the hot tub or sitting around the bonfire was perfect! All of the rooms were nicely appointed, cute moose decor, and cozy make for an awesome get away. We also used the Game Room which was great entertainment! We will be coming back to this great gem on the lake.
Cadillac offers a wide variety of recreational activities, mouthwatering cuisine, appealing attractions, unique shopping and is clearly a small town with a ‘vigorous economy, a healthy environment and a vibrant sense of community.
There are large chain grocery stores and the usual fast food restaurants, but we encourage you to try the locally owned businesses and restaurants created by those who live, here. For instance, The Clam Lake Beer Co is a newly opened brew pub offering 20+ beers, brewed on site; the sport a great menu and wine is offered, too :)
To wear off that great food and drink; we offer over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, 34 downhill ski runs with over 485 feet of vertical drop, over 58 miles of cross country ski and snow shoe trails (15 groomed miles), 90,000+ acres of state and national forest, and three major rivers with two large lakes offering year around world record fishing. Recreation defines our lives and offers ‘naturally inviting’ reasons to visit us.
After the day in the great outdoors, Cadillac offers unique shopping boutiques, three bowling centers, a roller skating rink, a championship ice rink, two full service health & fitness facilities, a 3D movie complex, and of course mouthwatering cuisine at the many locally owned restaurants around the area. Add these attractions to a full line-up of winter festivals and you can spend a fun-filled, or relaxing vacation – either way, come connect in Cadillac, you’ll keep coming back for more.
Once you arrive at the Moose you will most likely not want to leave the property; however, should you decide to take a day trip we have recommendations!
Are you a golfer? Enjoy fine dining? Sunsets on Lake Michigan? Check out Arcadia Bluffs located in Empire, Michigan. Arcadia Bluffs is just over an hour's drive, West of the cottage. http://arcadiabluffs.com/
Even if you don't enjoy golf you will enjoy this location's ambiance of gorgeous views and scrumptious food! Drop off the golfers and head to Frankfort for the day! Rejoin them at night for the sunset and dinner :) http://goo.gl/maps/t5IEh
Don't Miss Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park! An hour from the cottage and less than 20 minutes North of Arcadia Bluffs is often the highlight of our guests' day trips. Pack a lunch, take a hike and experience the stuff lifetime memories are made of!
Manistee is 45 minutes, West and offers both a casino and Lake Michigan shores. Traverse City is less than an hour and hosts many festivals throughout the year, including the World Famous Cherry Festival in July. Also in Traverse City - the Leelanau Peninsula is home to many wineries and shops.
You will never lack for something to do when you stay at The Moose! Or, just kick-back and do nothing at all and still experience one of the best vacations of your life!
