OK for no-frills stay, especially with dog
This was an inexpensive choice with few amenities. If you like to have the best of the best, look elsewhere and be prepared to pay. If you don't mind very basic and (mostly) functional, Flamingo Fling is fine.
A few particulars:
-- It is right down the street from the ocean, about a 5-6 minute walk. The beach was not crowded at all during our week, which fell between Memorial Day and schools letting out and might have been a "slow" week for the OBX in general. It is not within walking distance of any usable part of the sound; a good entry point was about 4 miles south.
-- The view mostly is of a big field next to a large restaurant (Froggy Dog, which was poorly reviewed so we didn't try it). A tiny slice of the sound is visible from the hot tub.
-- About that hot tub ... it is small. Our group of four smallish, skinnyish folks couldn't fit comfortably in it. It was fine for two. Less fine for three.
-- We encountered two problems during our stay, a rusted out grill that literally collapsed on us and a leaky hot tub. Management, which is located right across the street, was very responsive, fixing each issue the day we notified them.
-- The deck and stairs probably should be replaced. Several steps were split and ready to break. The deck was a haven for splinters.
-- The master bath is tiny and the shower was smaller than that on a typical cruise ship. Thankfully, the outside shower was large and worked very well.
-- Not a place for tall people. In addition to the small hot tub, clearance under the deck was only a couple inches over my head. (I am about 6 feet tall.) A 6-4 person would be risking serious injury; I am not overstating this at all.
-- A good place for those with dogs -- or those who simply don't want to worry about keeping a pristine home looking beautiful. The carpets were thoroughly stained from previous four-legged guests. The big field just off the deck was a good place for our pup to romp about. The sound-side beach a few miles south was a great place for her to swim. (The ocean was too rough for her.)
-- Bring plenty of supplies. They gave us one roll of T.P. for two bathrooms and very little else. We brought our own paper towels, sponges, soap, condiments, beach towels, etc., etc., etc. If you think you might need it, you probably do!
-- The water doesn't taste very good. That's probably everywhere on the OBX; this was our first trip. We ended up using mostly bottled water.
Again, it's a decent, no-frills HQ for a vacation.
