Overview

Arrens-Marsous Barn Rental Photos and Description

Self-catering 1, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments and 3 bedroom gîte in French Pyrenees

Les Artigaux is situated in 5 hectares of wooded park, just outside the village of Arrens in the beautiful Val d’Azun in the French Pyrenees. In a beautiful mountain setting, it is ideally place for activity holidays such as walking, cycling, mountain biking, skiing, cross-country skiing and paragliding. All the accommodation is self-catering and has been furnished and equipped to a high standard. Le Soulor and Le Couraduque apartments sleep up to four people and L’Aubisque sleeps up to 6 with an additional cabin room suitable for two children. Le Tourmalet is a spacious loft apartment with 3 bedrooms including a huge master bedroom with en-suite bathroom. La Grange, a converted 18th Century barn, has three bedrooms and sleeps up to 7. A Scandinavian hot tub and a sauna have recently been installed for guests to relax in. The owners and their two children live on-site and are always happy to provide local knowledge or help you arrange your holiday activities.

Plenty to see: Arrens is about 12km from the pretty town of Argelès-Gazost, which is well known for its thermal baths and has an excellent weekly market. Lourdes, world famous for the shrine of St. Bernadette and attracting millions of pilgrims a year, is 25 km away. The historic and elegant town of Pau is within an hour’s drive. Otherwise, we are in the heart of some of the most spectacular scenery France has to offer, from famous Pyrenean sites – such as the observatory perched on the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, the cascades at the Pont d'Espagne or the World Heritage site of Gavarnie – to picturesque lakes and mountain villages with their age-old traditions.

Plenty to do: The area is a paradise for walkers and cyclists of all levels. Activities available locally in the summer season include horse riding, rafting, paragliding and fishing, and in the winter both downhill and cross-country skiing, snow shoe walking and husky sledge rides. The unspoilt natural environment offers the opportunity to observe a variety of mountain flora and fauna (including eagles, vultures and isards).

Annual events: The area hosts a number of annual festivals and events – the most famous being the Tour de France which, in 2008 will have a stage finish at Hautacam above Argelès. Also in 2008 this stage will be featured as the Etape du Tour when 9000 amateur cyclists ride the route the week before the main event. On a smaller scale, there are many traditional fêtes which offer great opportunities to absorb the local culture and traditions. In January a Nordic weekend is held at the Col de Couraduque enabling anyone to try out the various activities such as cross-country skiing and snow shoe walking. In September Arrens hosts the Cutlet Festival which celebrates the return of the flocks of sheep from the high mountain pastures. In October Aucun has a horse festival with displays featuring working horses of a variety of breeds. 2008 will also see special celebrations in Lourdes to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the apparition to St.Bernadette.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Awesome – Mountain biking, mountain boarding, the luge, white water rafting and kayaking, fantastic walks, even time to read a book and relax with a bottle of wine. Two teenage boys and two tired parents have had a brilliant time and all due to our wonderful hosts who looked after us from the moment we arrived until we sadly had to leave this superb area of France. We will definitely be recommending Les Artigaux to all our like-minded friends.

Experience of a lifetime!

  • 5 of 5
My family(3 adults and 2 children under 4) stayed at La Grange for two weeks this past July ‘14 and we can’t say enough great things about the property and especially its hosts Simon and Suzanne. Everything was as advertised from listing, although the scenery is best left to the pictures as opposed to words. La Grange was more than big enough for our family of 5 and the additional grounds both in front and behind gave the kids plenty of room to spread out and enjoy themselves, the two swing sets in back helped out as well. We arrived in Arrens-Marsous very late(nearly 8pm) and Simon and Suzanne were there to greet us and give us the customary tour of the property and make sure we had everything we needed(including a dozen fresh eggs direct from the hens on the property!) and since we arrived so late and on Bastille Day(virtually all stores were closed) so Simon had made sure that we had given him a grocery list prior to our arrival so that we would have a well stocked fridge for dinner and breakfast the next morning. The daily bread/croissant delivery is something we miss to this day and is a very nice touch. We had come to Arrens for both the 2014 L’Etape du Tour & the Tour de France and since it was a cycling focused vacation La Grange could not have been a better fit. La Grange is perfectly suited for access to all the iconic climbs of the Pyrenees, La Grange literally sits at the base of the Col du Solour and the Col d’Aubisque and the Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden and the Hautacam are just one valley over…cyclists dreams will be made at La Grange! For those not coming for the cycling the tranquility and beautiful scenery of La Grange will inspire you to get outdoors and at the very least enjoy the Tuesday market in Argeles-Gazost or perhaps many of the hiking trails that are on offer within the Val d’Azun. A final note about your hosts Simons and Suzanne, when I arrived at La Grange my plans for getting to the start of L’Etape had fallen through and Simon and Suzanne took it upon themselves to find a solution to get me to Pau the night before the race. In the end they not only personally drove me to Pau but also escorted my family to the base of the Hautacam to see me finish the L’Etape. I cannot say enough nice an wonderful things about them as they truly made our stay at La Grange the experience of a lifetime.

A wonderful holiday in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5
We are a family of 4 & have just returned from spending a wonderful week at this beautiful location. From the minute we arrived our hosts Suzanne & Simon did everything they could to make us feel at home. The views from the property are nothing short of spectacular & opening the shutters every morning to be greeted by the breathtaking panorama was an absolute delight. We stayed in Le Grange which is beautifully renovated with all mod cons - even British Satellite TV & Wi-Fi - which kept the kids happy in the evenings. There is plenty to do in the local area and coming back home to soak in the outdoor hot tub was a highlight. All in all - a great place for a holiday and highly recommended for all.

A Fantastic Location

  • 5 of 5
We arrived tired from our long drive from England, to find a small piece of perfection hidden in the Pyrenees. We were met with a lovely welcome by Simon and Suzanne, who throughout the week showed us the perfect blend of welcome to their home community and leaving us alone to get on with our holiday.
The apartment was very well stocked - there was 7 of us, 2 adults and 5 children and there was absolutely everything we needed to live properly for the week. A really good range of appropriately sized pots, pans, storage and kitchen implements, which in our experience is unusual.
The apartment was spacious, spotlessly clean and very homely without being fussy. A really good touch was having UK Satellite TV and a DVD player, really helped in the mornings when the adults wanted a bit of a lay in!
The supply of board games was very welcome - several lazy mornings spent with the kids playing them.
The WiFi access was a fantastic and unexpected addition - It enabled us to record short Video Postcards for grandparents, aunts and uncles and send them regularly.
The grounds were fantastically laid out, enjoyable and interesting for the kids daily adventures and Suzanne was really patient with them, showing them round the ducks, geese, chickens and goats.
The BBQ and separate outside dining area for us was a welcome addition, as was the welcome pack of food and supplies when we arrived.
Simon and Suzanne did a daily morning Boulangerie run as well - which was magnificent!! We just placed our daily order with them (we kept ours the same all week), and presto! We'd open the front door every morning to find our basket full of fresh, delicious croissants and pain for the day. Still warm...
The immediate village and surrounds are beautiful with more than enough to keep our whole family entertained for the week, despite our tastes ranging across 5 children from a 6 yr old to a 15 yr old, as well as us adults. The open air swimming pool just 3 minutes away was a big hit.
Anyone intending to go to this area will have an idea what to expect, but if it's your first time - set your jaw to 'dropping' before you arrive. Beautiful villages, huge mountains and hills on your doorstep, and one of the warmest welcomes we've ever received - anywhere!
Oh, and the Danish log-burner outdoor hot-tub overlooking the valley is a genius idea!
I cannot recommend staying here highly enough! We're definitely hoping to come back next year and bring our friends.
Thank-you so much.

Chaleureuse réception et bel hébergement!

  • 5 of 5

Warm reception and beautiful accomodation...

  • 5 of 5
We chose this accomodation from the internet, based largely on picturesque photos and strong reviews... we were not disapointed! Simon and Suzanne were exceptional hosts, friendly, helpful and very approachable. As a French/Australian couple, we were impressed with their fluency in both languages. We had some interesting conversations throughout the week, as well as the routine interactions to place our bread order for the following morning (which they deliver to your doorstep). The accomodation has magnificent views and is in close proximity to good walking tracks, small villages and lots of activities (an excellent location for paragliding!). There are some lovely extras, including a picturesque outdoors hot tub, sauna, DVDs, books on the shelf, picking wild strawberries on the property (end of May) and good coffee/tea supplied.
We initially booked for 3 nights, and ended up extending our stay. We highly recommend this accomodation to anyone visiting this area in the Pyrenees!

The picturesque village of Arrens is at an altitude of 860m in the Val d'Azun in the French Pyrenees, surrounded by peaks rising to over 2000m. The amenities in the village include a small supermarket, two bakeries, a butcher, a shop selling regional produce, a newsagent and a pharmacy. There are also tennis courts, mini-golf and an open air heated swimming pool (open in July and August). There are several restaurants in the village and others in the surrounding villages. The spa town of Argeles-Gazost, which is 15 minutes drive away has a wider selection of shops and restaurants and has an excellent market every Tuesday as well as thermal baths and a casino. A further 15 minutes away is Lourdes with its famous shrine and a wider choice of shops and restaurants. Arrens is one of the entrance points for the Pyrenees National Park which has been created to protect the local flora and fauna and which is a great environment to see vultures, eagles and other birds of prey.

Ski: The largest cross-country skiing area in the Pyrenees at the Col du Soulor is just 10 minutes by car from Les Artigaux. This area links to the neighbouring Col du Couraduque and in all has about 110 km of prepared marked pistes. There is also an area set aside for children's tobogganing.

The nearest downhill skiing is at Hautacam, above Argeles-Gazost, about 30 minutes' drive away. This is a day station and has fairly limited skiing, but is a perfect opportunity to try the sport for a very modest cost. Within an hour's drive are the larger resorts of Cauterets, Luz-Ardiden and Bareges. Bareges links with La Mongie to form the largest downhill skiing area in the Pyrenees and has a total of 100km of pistes.

Equipment for both downhill and cross-country skiing can be hired locally and tuition is available at all the resorts. The cost of a day's cross-country skiing at the Col du Soulor is just 7€ and generally the cost of ski passes at the downhill resorts is cheaper than the Alps.
