Family Vacation Getaway

Krsanne NC
Review Submitted: October 6, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We throughly enjoyed our family vacation getaway. The owner was a pleasure to work with and very helpful!! The description is accurate regarding the location, layout and amenities, although there are only showers, no bathtubs in the bathrooms. The house is a "rustic cabin in the mountains", adjacent to Wilson's creek, accessed by a long gravel road that runs along the creek. The property was clean, well-maintained and well furnished with kitchen appliances. We loved the deck, the waterfall and the swimming spot. My husband and 7-year old son even went for a short swim. My son was a bit disappointed that the water-wheel was not working, but it was completely forgotten when he realized that he could play darts and horse-shoes. There is even a tree-swing that my husband and brother-in-law both thought was great. There is plenty of room to run around, and although the steps down from the deck to the water are steep, there is a much gentler slope if you go around the house. We enjoyed hiking the trail behind the house that goes to a small waterfall and to a lookout for Grandfather Mountain. (If you are desperate for cell phone service, my husband was able to access it on the trail up near the lookout spot!) We also hiked to Betsy's Country store. The gentleman there gave us other great places nearby where we could go hiking. It was a very relaxing vacation. Thanks, Mr. Jeff!!
Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to review our property! We just upgraded the down stairs TV to 32" with built in dvd and added a new DTV receiver to try to eliminate some remotes and added a new washer. Earlier this spring we updated the tile and fixures in the downstairs bathroom and replaced the front door with a prettier door. Basically we're constantly trying to find ways to make our home more inviting, fun and family friendly. We just added 25'X175' pond that the frogs have taken to and I put some creek minnows in there but we've got a kingfisher that's been hanging out so I believe they are gone already. I may put a few trout in there to see if they can make it. The water wheel is still on my to do list. Thanks again.

Get away from the city for a weekend

Review Submitted: August 17, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We spent a long weekend at the lodge with our 2 teens and our cats. It was a great getaway - my teens loved the rope swing (younger kids would need supervision) and the stream. We played ball in the yard and spent hours on the deck in the evening with our cats - grilling, roasting marshmallows over the fire, laughing and listening to the stream.
The ride in and out traverses a windy gravel road - you're car will be dusty but the views of Wilson Creek are worth it. We spent a day in the creek - my son did some bouldering over the water. We took our 4wheeler with the intent to go to the ATV park but we ended up doing a little riding in the area instead. We spent a day at Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls (took about 40 minutes to get the GFM). I had never been to Linville Falls and would recommend the hike. It was beautiful. I wanted to do some hiking in the Wilson Creek area - there are tons of trails and things to see but I'll have to save that for next time.
We normally stay busy our entire vacation but really needed a few days to unwind this time. It was a pleasure and the house had everything we needed. We did have trouble buying last minute food items near the house so planning is key with your groceries - also, eating out will mean a good drive so again, have some food handy in the house, in case you don't want to go back out.
If I could change anything, I would get rid of the TV - we had no trouble accessing it and my kids found all of their favorites. I think we spend more quality time together when we can't watch TV but I know that's not for everyone.
All in all, it was a great getaway and we would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks to Jeff & Debra for a great rental!
Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review. Being able to unplug from the hectic world and get re-connected with family and nature is what we enjoy most about our home in the mountains as well. We always wish for a couple more days and we've been going up there for 30 years. Please come back soon.

Brown Mountain Lodge

Maryland family Maryland
Review Submitted: June 21, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
Our family loved the lodge. Our 8 and 10 year olds spent hours on the creek. The waterwheel is beautiful and I understand big rains put it out of service. Can't beat walking out of the house and hiking a mountain. The nearby gorge is stunningly beautiful. A wonderful way to spend the day. The house is lovely - the old windows in the living room were great...our weather was good so we could open them. The property itself is beautiful, plenty of room for any outdoor activity and for our dog to run. We'd only encourage not to burn hazardous material in the pit as we found a bunch in there and it should be removed from the pit and trash should be properly disposed of by renters. Also, Jeff was most accommodating with any questions we had while we were there. We were happy to be remote (the point of our vacation!), but well within reach of day trips and great hiking. You really need to come in with food or you have to travel to get some. Our subaru did fine on the roads, but one can't be fussy about dust on their car. We'll visit again, I'm sure. We had a great time and loved the lodge and its atmosphere.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, the bon fire pit is on the list of things to be done. We just added a new Dart board to the deck as well. I'll email you when the water wheel is back up and running.

Our Weeknd Gateaway !

Sparkey Cornelius,NC
Review Submitted: April 1, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
The property is very secluded and you have no cell phone service so you have to use a credit card to make calls. The upstairs master bedroom is fairly new but has a problem with Ladybugs both in the bedroom and the bathroom. The downstairs is clean but the interior is dark and the windows are in need of some updating. Televison is very iffy and we no satilite the first night we were ther ena dno DVD player. Water presure is a little slow so be patient. One of the main attraction is the large waterwheel on the property which was not working when we were there. You must also have a truck or four wheel drive since the roads are aweful ! Be prepared no grocery stores and very limited access to anything. Its about an hour's drive from the main road to the house. Great place for horseback riding if you're into horses and fishing.
Owner's Response: Our goal is always to offer a great vacation home destination and experience. Unfortunately Lady bugs do invade every spring. Blinds and curtains are always pulled between stays and we do encourage guests to open living room curtains and blinds at arrival to feel at home, our home is loaded with windows the only ones that are dated are in the living room and 1 bedroom the rest are brand new. We updated our downstairs TV to a 27" Sony and the satelitte TV control for channels was a misunderstanding of a button on the remote. I found out after the fact a remote to control the DVD had expired batteries. When discussing our property we mentioned the water wheel being currently inoperative currently. The roads are state maintained and driven daily by cars, school buses, and trucks. We do have pictures on our website as well to show you what they look like. In pre vacation discussion I do tell guests stop in Lenoir or Morganton for the best grocery choices. Convenience stores are 25 min and grocery 45 min away, all of which we describe in detail on our web site which is provided. Our guest book in our home is full of great fun and family experiences. Please do not hesitate to call for any questions at all.
