About Jeff Shook

The original owners had incredible vision even back in the 50's to build such a unique and beautiful home they called 'The Hideaway'. They constructed a 12 ft steel water wheel down on the creek that was beautiful. When we bought the home we wanted to restore the property and water wheel to its grandeur and make it even better to share with folks that love the mountains. My wife and I invite you to experience the vacation cabin rental that you will always remember the good times with your family. We re-named the hideaway to the Brown Mountain Lodge. Our goal is to provide one of the best family oriented vacation and cabin rentals in the Boone and Blowing Rock NC area.

In 2007 I wrote a true short ghost story about the adventures my brother and I have experienced in the Brown Mountain Area. The book is a collection of and titled '13 Terrifying Tales from the North Carolina Piedmont'. A copy of the book and pictures to document my tales as well as other books about the area are in the Lodge for your reading pleasure around the campfire. This book is published by Lorimer Press and is available at Barnes and Noble and other bookstores in the region.

Jeff Shook purchased this house in 2000
Why Jeff Shook chose Blowing Rock

We admired and dreamed about owning this home as a kids and when the opportunity presented itself we made it happen. The Brown Mountain area and Wilson Creek Gorge is off the beaten path and has been undiscovered for years. People are finding out about it now since the River was designated a Wild and Scenic River in 2004. If your looking for a private paradise pet friendly vacation home in a secluded Mountain setting with beautiful streams, waterfalls and River Gorge then you just found it.

What makes this house unique

BML is a multi level home with 3 BR's, the living area and kitchen are comfy and set up for family fun and enjoying the home. We have WiFi and HiDef TV for staying connected with the world. Guests really enjoy our outdoor living area with fireplace, grills and swings that looks over the creek. Right up behind the house are terrific trails that we have views of on our web site.

Family Vacation Getaway

5 of 5
Submitted: October 6, 2009 Stayed: July 2009
We throughly enjoyed our family vacation getaway. The owner was a pleasure to work with and very helpful!! The description is accurate regarding the location, layout and amenities, although there are only showers, no bathtubs in the bathrooms. The house is a "rustic cabin in the mountains", adjacent to Wilson's creek, accessed by a long gravel road that runs along the creek. The property was clean, well-maintained and well furnished with kitchen appliances. We loved the deck, the waterfall and the swimming spot. My husband and 7-year old son even went for a short swim. My son was a bit disappointed that the water-wheel was not working, but it was completely forgotten when he realized that he could play darts and horse-shoes. There is even a tree-swing that my husband and brother-in-law both thought was great. There is plenty of room to run around, and although the steps down from the deck to the water are steep, there is a much gentler slope if you go around the house. We enjoyed hiking the trail behind the house that goes to a small waterfall and to a lookout for Grandfather Mountain. (If you are desperate for cell phone service, my husband was able to access it on the trail up near the lookout spot!) We also hiked to Betsy's Country store. The gentleman there gave us other great places nearby where we could go hiking. It was a very relaxing vacation. Thanks, Mr. Jeff!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to review our property! We just upgraded the down stairs TV to 32" with built in dvd and added a new DTV receiver to try to eliminate some remotes and added a new washer. Earlier this spring we updated the tile and fixures in the downstairs bathroom and replaced the front door with a prettier door. Basically we're constantly trying to find ways to make our home more inviting, fun and family friendly. We just added 25'X175' pond that the frogs have taken to and I put some creek minnows in there but we've got a kingfisher that's been hanging out so I believe they are gone already. I may put a few trout in there to see if they can make it. The water wheel is still on my to do list. Thanks again.

We Didn't Want to Leave!

We Didn't Want to Leave!

First let me say it took us a day or so to get used to being "away from it all." No cell phone, no internet, winding dirt roads aren't what we are accustomed to at home. But once we got adjusted, we found ourselves really getting into the seclusion, serenity and natural beauty of the property. We didn't have to venture far off the property for 3-4 days. We slept late, had breakfast on the deck, listened to the rushing water and decompressed. Then some of us headed down to the waterfall and played around. Love the swing down there. it was warm enough a few days to get in the water.

We took trips to Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock and investigated some new places along with the parkway.

My momma's dog Muffin also enjoyed herself. She loved having all the land to run about. We didn't have to worry about traffic with her. In fact, we got excited when a vehicle did pass along the road because it doesn't happen that often.

Many thanks to Jeff for making this wonderful place available to rent. I've shared our experience with many friends and family and I believe most will give it a try too. They won't regret it!

Our stay at Brown Mountain Lodge

Driving up the driveway, the house matched the pictures exactly - Everything that was presented in the listing was accurate.

The place was clean and inviting. Everything we needed was available. There were plenty of blankets and pillows on our comfortable beds. The kitchen was stocked with kitchen appliances, pots and pans and utensils - just about anything you needed to cook with. – Just bring the food and you’re good to go!

Hanging out on the covered deck with a cozy fire in the fireplace, playing darts and just relaxing - can't get any better than that.
Our teenage boys had plenty to keep them busy - exploring, riding and fishing.

We look forward to visiting again.

Get away from the city for a weekend

5 of 5
Submitted: August 17, 2008 Stayed: August 2008
We spent a long weekend at the lodge with our 2 teens and our cats. It was a great getaway - my teens loved the rope swing (younger kids would need supervision) and the stream. We played ball in the yard and spent hours on the deck in the evening with our cats - grilling, roasting marshmallows over the fire, laughing and listening to the stream.
The ride in and out traverses a windy gravel road - you're car will be dusty but the views of Wilson Creek are worth it. We spent a day in the creek - my son did some bouldering over the water. We took our 4wheeler with the intent to go to the ATV park but we ended up doing a little riding in the area instead. We spent a day at Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls (took about 40 minutes to get the GFM). I had never been to Linville Falls and would recommend the hike. It was beautiful. I wanted to do some hiking in the Wilson Creek area - there are tons of trails and things to see but I'll have to save that for next time.
We normally stay busy our entire vacation but really needed a few days to unwind this time. It was a pleasure and the house had everything we needed. We did have trouble buying last minute food items near the house so planning is key with your groceries - also, eating out will mean a good drive so again, have some food handy in the house, in case you don't want to go back out.
If I could change anything, I would get rid of the TV - we had no trouble accessing it and my kids found all of their favorites. I think we spend more quality time together when we can't watch TV but I know that's not for everyone.
All in all, it was a great getaway and we would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks to Jeff & Debra for a great rental!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review. Being able to unplug from the hectic world and get re-connected with family and nature is what we enjoy most about our home in the mountains as well. We always wish for a couple more days and we've been going up there for 30 years. Please come back soon.

Brown Mountain Lodge

5 of 5
Submitted: June 21, 2008 Stayed: March 2008
Our family loved the lodge. Our 8 and 10 year olds spent hours on the creek. The waterwheel is beautiful and I understand big rains put it out of service. Can't beat walking out of the house and hiking a mountain. The nearby gorge is stunningly beautiful. A wonderful way to spend the day. The house is lovely - the old windows in the living room were great...our weather was good so we could open them. The property itself is beautiful, plenty of room for any outdoor activity and for our dog to run. We'd only encourage not to burn hazardous material in the pit as we found a bunch in there and it should be removed from the pit and trash should be properly disposed of by renters. Also, Jeff was most accommodating with any questions we had while we were there. We were happy to be remote (the point of our vacation!), but well within reach of day trips and great hiking. You really need to come in with food or you have to travel to get some. Our subaru did fine on the roads, but one can't be fussy about dust on their car. We'll visit again, I'm sure. We had a great time and loved the lodge and its atmosphere.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, the bon fire pit is on the list of things to be done. We just added a new Dart board to the deck as well. I'll email you when the water wheel is back up and running.
