The cottage is perfect for an individual, a couple, or parents with 1 or 2 small children. Its bright and beautiful decor features art work by local artists. The West Indies-style architecture includes a high ceiling and ceiling fan to maximize the cooling effects of the breezes from the Atlantic. There is a queen-size bed, a sofa bed, and 3 eating areas: inside with a view of gardens and sea; on the porch overlooking the sea; and in the back patio, with a view of Mt Nevis volcano and other hills. At the Cottage, you're surrounded by superb gardens, and you have your own outdoor hot-tub, in seclusion provided by bougainvillea, oleanders, palms, and citrus trees. There is WiFi for your laptop and other devices. The cottage is on the same multi-acre property as Black Sand Cove Beach House, but is completely separate, with its own entrance gate and complete privacy thanks to the landscaping design by Julie Toll (known in Britain as multi-award winner at Chelsea Flower Show)
cottage conveniences: The cottage has a washer/dryer in a closet off the back patio. We have DSL Internet access for those who travel with a laptop. You can eat on the front porch (for morning shade), on the back patio (for mountain and garden views), or indoors by the glass doors to enjoy the view. Our comprehensive guest information binders give recommendations for our favorite restaurants and activities, with details about where to go and how to get there. You can see dozens of photos on Nevis and of Black Sand Cove if you go to our website and click on the Gallery. Black Sand Cove is on Facebook; become a Fan.
Enjoying Black Sand Cove: The beautiful and innovative-designed gardens at Black Sand Cove were designed and developed by Julie Toll. Julie has won many garden design awards in England, including 4 Gold and 2 Silver awards at the famous Chelsea Flower Show. Her special interest is maximizing the use of native species, and creating ecologically-sound landscaping. Secluded on our private acreage, you'll hear only the sounds of nature: the wind in the banana trees, the birds, the crickets and frogs, and the waves on the short of the virtually private beach. (While all beaches are public property on Nevis, the only way to get to this beach is by boat or down our stairway.) The 360-degree views provide fabulous sunrises and sunsets, and the passing spectacle of the changing clouds all day long. This is a great place to get away from it all, and relax, write, paint, play music, or just give your mind a rest. With temperatures in the 80's all year, you may have trouble leaving.
Tim and I bought this home to use for vacations, family gatherings, and eventually for retirement. People who have stayed at many rental homes in the Caribbean describe ours as one of the best equipped they've seen. That's because we spend quite a lot of time there ourselves. We designed the kitchen so that more than one person has convenient space to work together, because we like to cook in teams when a large family group gathers. Every room in the light, airy house has delightful views. We designed the swimming pool with broad, shallow steps to make it user-friendly for parents playing in the water with young children. With a separate cottage, close by but entirely separate and invisible from the house, a larger group of 8-12 can fit in, so it's a great place for an extended family get-together. With that many guests, some wouldn't have their own bathrooms or private bedrooms, since they'd be using sofa beds. The maid comes every 2-3 days.
Linda purchased this cottage in 2002
Nevis is a small island, popular with those who seek a comparatively undeveloped tropical island to enjoy nature, hiking, the rainforest, and the wonderful views. Hiking in the rainforest is a popular activity. Guides are available to take adventurous hikers to the top of the volcano. Jim Johnson will lead you on a hike or a birdwatching expedition. Jim is a walking encyclopedia of information on all facets of the natural environment here. He’ll also come out to Black Sand Cove in the evening to do a stargazing talk for you. Horseback riding and biking are available, and deep sea-fishing, sailing, scuba, windsurfing, and snorkeling are popular activities. And there are art galleries and 2 museums. Information about activities and restaurants is waiting for you in our guest information binder. Black Sand Cove is on Facebook; become a Fan.
My husband and I stayed at Blacksand cove cottage for 2 weeks in March. The cottage was perfect for us. Everything was available to make our stay relaxing and comfortable. The gardens are beautiful and private. We enjoyed many sunsets on Blacksand coves beach. You had the sense that you were in your own private Eden. We also fell in love with the island and the nevisian people who were friendly, gracious and kind as we explored their isle. Beth and Paul Lyons
We had a wonderful time staying at Black Sand Cove Cottage. The gardens were amazing, always something new to see. The access to the beach was easy, and private. Such a quiet location, with a great view of the ocean from the cottage porch. The cottage itself was perfect for us, great layout, everything needed for cooking, dining, and relaxing. The house was not rented while we were there, so we also enjoyed the pool access. We were so relaxed and comfortable during our stay in Nevis, and Black Sand Cottage Cove, we certainly didn't want to leave. The wide variety of wildlife was incredible. Hummingbirds outside the window, lizards hanging around outside the house, and an amazing variety of other birds as well. Nevis is certainly our style, quiet, and everyone we came across was friendly and helpful. Enjoyed eating at the local restaurants as well. Fabulous vacation, with a wonderful stay at Black Sand Cove Cottage.
We spent 5 weeks in the cottage and are itching to get back as soon as we can. We looked through lots and lots of ads for our vacation and were incredibly lucky to come across Black Sand Cove. Everything was exactly as advertised, with beautiful grounds, Adolfo's wonderful presence, and seclusion. Our goal was to get away from everything and many days, unless we chose otherwise, we were the only people we saw. Of course, we had to share the area with goats, donkeys, and sometimes monkeys, but they were all welcome visitors. In fact, most days we looked forward to the goat parade on the road outside. We can't wait to visit again to completely unplug and hear our thoughts again apart from the hustle of life in modern society.
[2 emails sent to my friends/family from Property tell the story best] Day 1: So...THIS is paradise....Adolfo (property caretaker) picked me up at the ferry and drove me to this amazing place. He then showed me all the nooks and crannies on the property - quiet sitting spots that are perched either right on the beach/water, or high up on a bluff above the water. Each spot more beautiful than the last, and each accessible by walking through the most gorgeous landscaping/gardens I've ever seen. And of course, he also showed me the Jacuzzi and the pool...it was hard to walk by those (even temporarily). Most striking though...is how secluded it is here. The "black sand cove" is truly "all my own", and its black sand beach goes on forever without a house or person anywhere in sight. Adolfo had indeed stocked my frig with all of the groceries I requested (to a tee!) and I made myself dinner. While that was cooking, I plopped in a CD they have here (Samual Barber playing Adagio for Strings - magical), opened the Sauvignon Blanc Adolfo picked up for me as well, and sat on the back porch watching the light fade.I now sit here, belly full, slight buzz from the wine, listening to the rustling of the magnificent trees/bushes that surround this house, enjoying the sounds of crickets and frogs, and...wait for it....yup....donkeys braying in the distance. I couldn't make this stuff up. If there is a more peaceful, beautiful place, I don't know where.Day 3: This place just gets better and better. Lying in bed yesterday dusk, feeling the the cross-breeze (which sweeps thru every inch of this one-room cottage, and over me, like it has purpose), especially when you add in the LOUD sounds of the flora/fauna that hug the cottage is indescribable. This same cross-breeze (bathed in bright BRIGHT sunlight during the day - bouncing every which way off the cheerfully butter-colored walls) is present morning, noon, and night, and somehow makes emailing, cooking, reading, washing dishes, going to sleep, waking up....everything...seem better ...almost like I've never done any of them before. Occasionally I will put in the Melody Gardot CD (another that they have here - fabulous bluesy voice), but generally I let God's orchestra be my music. Add in the morning rain-showers, and I'm telling ya.... One of my friends asked me yesterday if I minded being alone, and I didn't even have to stop to think: "No", I said...."talking to someone during any of this would
Linda, The botanical gardens of Nevis rival yours at Black Sand Cove, not vice versa. The flowers, hummingbirds, palms, full moon, stars, peace and quiet combined to provide a wonderfully regenerative experience. It inspired my song in the guestbook at the cottage, "Frangipani in the Moonlight", which has been well recieved by a number of audiences. It was good to be back on Nevis and there is no place we would rather stay. It was an even better place to be while Mexico, NY was being buried under 88 inches of snow this past February. Hope to be back soon.
The cottage at Black Sand Cove is a little piece of heaven on Earth. Perfectly situated to be private, secluded, peaceful, but close enough to everything you might want to see and do on the island. The gardens are magnificent and Adolfo's smiling face and vast wisdom are delightful bonuses! The secluded beach is beautiful and the back porch is the best place to be!!
We found the cottage to be perfectly equipped with everything we needed and more and the Guide Book was our most valuable resource (next to Adolfo!!). Linda's rental car was a lucky find, too, and we enjoyed exploring the island on our own.
Paradise for "ahneemoonahs" like us.
Nevis is a small island, quite undeveloped for the Caribbean, and off the beaten track. Nature, hiking, enjoying the rain forest and the fabulous views: these are popular activities along with swimming, snorkeling, scuba, strolling on beaches, and watching the sea and the clouds. There are lots of great restaurants, but for casinos, nightlife, and shopping, better choose a different island! For peaceful enjoyment of nature, we recommend Nevis as tops!
Other Activities: rain forest hikes, bird-watching
