Our house is located in Mazunte, in the state of Oaxaca on the Pacific Ocean on a beautiful secluded beach. Mermejita beach is approximately one mile in length protected and surrounded by a small mountain range. It is one of the nesting grounds for quelonian turtles as well as the rare leatherback turtle. The sounds of birds, waves, frogs and insects are the natural music of this house. Built by an artist in 2006 to create and re energize in this tropical jungle filled with life its high palm roof ceilings, cool clay tiled floors, wide verandas with inviting hammocks, a hot tub looking out onto the ocean, spectacular upper and lower terraces, are a true retreat from the fast paced world.

The village of Mazunte (located 2 km distance) is a small quiet village that is trying to make eco-tourism work. Boat rides are available for fishing and to view turtles, manta rays, dolphins and even whales in the winter months. Birdwatchers will find local pelicans flying inches from the waves, and egrets, ibis, storks, herons and countless shore birds both on the beach and in nearby roosting sites in the mangroves. Visit the local turtle museum in Mazunte which displays, breeds and researches native turtles. Discover coral reefs with simple scuba masks right off the shoreline, take a white water rafting adventure on a local river, learn to surf, swim, or just find a quiet beach and daydream.

  • Both bathrooms are open to the surrounding nature. One has a view onto the surrounding trees and the other towards the mountains and the beach. Each bathroom has colorful tiles and painted talavera sinks. Another separate outdoor shower is located near to the beach entrance to wash off sand before entering the house or before bathing in the hot tub.

  • The two spacious master suites on the upper floor (48 sq. m.) have gorgeous high palm roofed ceilings, wooden floors, terrific ocean views and an all around feeling of what paradise should mean. The two ground floor bedrooms 24 sq. m. share a wide cool veranda with hammocks, and view to the garden and ocean. All four bedrooms are screened in for mosquitoes. There is one extra double bed that can be placed in any of the four bedrooms to accommodate one extra adult or two children depending on individual needs.

Notes: Mermejita is not your typical rental house. It was built by an artist and exists only because of a rare tenacious spirit and a creative vision so in no way does it mimic the Acapulco condo style vacation house. It is more of a secluded getaway off the beaten path suited towards adults or artists looking for a quiet retreat. We rent weekly but highly recommend a minimum of two weeks or more.

The kitchen and dining areas are at the heart of this house being a place where family and friends feel comfortable, a true social gathering place. These two rooms are at the front of the house, completely screened in for mosquitoes and with a gorgeous view to the ocean. You can be preparing a meal and still enjoy the ever changing colors of the water and sky. A big covered terrace with lounge chairs, hammocks and a big table are also close by for informal lunches and snacks. Besides the comforts of prepared meals at home there are many small restaurants available in and around Mazunte serving Mexican as well as international cuisine. We have written a small guest information booklet which includes our recommendations.

This house is simple and elegant, built of local materials and know how, 100 solar powered, sitting comfortably into the surrounding landscape. It is well adapted to the local tropical climate offering enough shade, inviting views and a constant cool breeze. It is a place that opens a sense of belonging to a much larger world. The pounding of the waves and the constant sound of the ocean, the stars in all their splendor in the nights sky, the light at sunrise on the water as well as the infinite colors of the sunset will make your stay really special.

I just returned from spending a week here. My only disappointment was that I had to leave. The first day I arrived, I truly felt all the stress from my life back home vanish. Picture the only sounds you hear are the crashing of the waves and the birds singing in the trees. Your morning beach walks are a delight when you follow the giant sea turtles tracks up to a nest where you know she had laid her eggs and follow them back to the water, the effort it took her while you slept the night away. There are no planes overhead or many boats in the water. Your solar palapa is equipped with everything you will need except for the TV and the ringing of a phone. I can't explain the calmness that comes over you without the distractions. The area is filled with great little restaurants and hidden little beach coves. The area is so untouched by development and the waters are the warmest and cleanest I have ever swam in. Great for surfing and snorkeling. There are mangroves to explore and little shops for shopping. Think of ending your day by coming back to this amazing retreat and cooling down in a hot tub that I referred to as a cool down tub of refreshing cool water with a tequila in your hand overlooking the untouched beauty of the beach and ocean ~ simple pleasures, it doesn't get much better than this!! Oh have your peso's before you arrive, I did not see any banks in Mazunte and you do need a car......Enjoy, we did.
