Great location, good living spaces

The location and size of the house are great--on a quiet road across the street from a lovely park, a 10-minute walk from a wonderful beach, shops and restaurants, bedding for ten people, and a large deck and kitchen that can comfortably accommodate lots of people. We thoroughly enjoyed our day trips to Block Island and Newport and the lovely evenings on the deck!
Upon arrival, we found the bathrooms clean and most of the floors adequately swept. However, cleanliness was lacking in other areas, especially the kitchen. We made the mistake of not immediately contacting the owner; when we spoke at mid-week and indicated our concerns, he said that he would have immediately sent out a cleaning crew and was even willing to do so the next day. We declined, however, because we had already cleaned the house.
The washer and dryer are in the basement, and as we had revolving guests throughout the week, we made use of them. It was very unpleasant to go into the basement, as it was not even swept, and the odor of the dampness was overwhelming--no dehumidifier was in use.
I wish rental homes would have faux or real leather couches and chairs so that they could be wiped down. The couches in the house were very uncomfortable and did not feel or smell clean. However, between the house and deck, we had plenty of comfortable seating to eat and lounge.
We will definitely return to the Narragansett area to vacation again. It is less commercialized than Cape Cod and the Jersey shore and has just as much to offer.

Owner's Response: The house is thoroughly cleaned by a third party after each and every renter vacates the property. One hundred percent of the cleaning fee that is paid by the renter is paid to the cleaning company - I do not benefit in any way other than to be assured the house is cleaned from ceiling to floor before each renter takes possession. Prior to this review, I had not received a single complaint regarding cleanliness during the four years I have rented the house. Had I been informed of the problem at the time the renter discovered the deficiency I would have immediately sent someone to address the problem. The couches are steam cleaned at the beginning of each season and they are cleaned as needed during the season. The house is located near the water and the basement is unfinished, as a result it can have a musty smell. I have rented this property every single week during the months of July and August for the past four years without receiving a single complaint about cleanliness, furniture or the location of the washer and dryer. I take great pride in my property and I make every effort to ensure each renter has a wonderful experience. I respond promptly and professionally to all inquiries and concerns.
