|Minimum Stay||3 - 4 nights|
Mockingbird Cottage is settled in the middle of the Finger Lakes Region in central New York. Our beautiful home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and sits on 1.3 acres. This house is nestled among mature trees and several meticulously maintained perennial gardens. The property has been professionally landscaped for over ten years and is gorgeous.
On the outside, this house has a fenced in back yard with a deck, Adirondack chairs and picnic table with umbrella. Eating outside on the deck in the summer is one of our favorite things to do. It’s also a great way to stay dry and watch while one of the occasional ten-minute summer storms rolls in and has it raining buckets one minute and the next not a cloud in the sky. There are extensive perennial gardens and beautiful natural stonework.
Our cottage is of moderate dimension, and though it looks small from the outside, it is rather deceiving. With eight rooms and pleasant sense of space, there are essentially three living rooms in this cottage. The first one is more cozy than spacious. The couch is a large sectional and the end chair reclines to a full lay down position. The 27-inch TV and gas fireplace are also in this room. The second living room is quite large and has sliding glass doors that go out to the deck and yard. The third living room, is the smallest of the three. It has a wood-burning fireplace, a love seat and chair. With the fireplace sitting area as the center, the downstairs also has two of the three bedrooms, a bathroom with a small shower (the upstairs bathroom is a full bath), laundry room, and separate entrance to the backyard. The downstairs feels connected, yet separate from the upstairs. In terms of space, and the way it's laid out, the cottage has a feeling of privacy for those who need it while having adequate space for a group to feel connected.
The cottage has hardwood floors, new paint and carpets, one wood-burning fireplace (with plenty of wood provided), one gas fireplace, central vacuum, washer and dryer, living room, dining room, and family room with television, DVD player and a extensive DVD library with over 300 movies. There are lots of unique built-ins throughout the house that add to its cottage-like character. The first-floor bedroom has a queen bed, built-in dresser and sliding glass doors that look out to several acres of soothing pastoral views. The entire house is beautifully furnished in Pottery Barn style and has a library of with several hundred books, including a large selection of cookbooks. Fine linens are provided, accompanied by down comforters.
The Finger Lakes Region is a beautiful area with many lakes. Our cottage is located just five miles southeast of the tip of Cayuga Lake, where you can participate in kayaking, waterskiing, sailing, power boating and water sports. Also, the cottage is about 40 minutes from Greek Peak Ski Resort, several state parks, and dozens of wineries, and just under one hour from Skaneateles Lake. For anyone considering visiting Cornell University, we are only two minutes from the Cornell Vet School, two minutes from East Hill Plaza and six minutes from Cornell’s main campus and Ithaca’s downtown Commons.
We are a couple that has been together for 25 years. We love to travel and both of us have small businesses we run in town. We have a stationery store called Mockingbird Paperie and a corporate and start up consulting business. We love dogs and have five of them! we both come from large families one is Italian the other Irish... so we never argue. I (suzanne ) am from San Francisco California and When I met Tim we fell in love and he brought me back to the finger lakes region where he grew up. We have two adult daughters that are both artists and we look forward to having you at our cottage!
Suzanne Loesch purchased this house in 2006
We live very close by and every time we drove by we would pass this house and notice it's charm and uniqueness and the people that lived in it became our friends and landscapers. The landscaping is what blew my mind and at one point the house had won an award for best landscaped house in Ithaca, I asked the owner if she was ever to consider selling to please let us know. She did and we bought it and a year later we turned it into Mockingbird Cottage.
It's a country house that feels like it's not too far away from town.. We are minutes to Cornell and minutes to the lake and town.
We had a wonderful time at Mockingbird Cottage!!!
we enjoyed the beautiful house, yard, the delicious raspberries and the amazing flowering gardens around the house!!!! WE also enjoyed the many animals in the yard, such as birds, chipmunks, adorable baby bunnies and ground hog living near the barn and a mama deer and her two beautiful little fawns munching the grass.
We had a great time!
The cottage was wonderfully comfortable and gave us a place to relax and enjoy my daughter for a week. When I asked if there was a roasting pan for thanksgiving dinner our hosts were kind enough to deliver one to us on our arrival. Perfect week.
I stayed here with my husband, our one year old son and my parents while we were in town for a wedding. It was the perfect size for us. The kitchen was very well stocked - more so than any other place I have stayed like this. The movie and book collection was impressive, too! The rooms were all very comfortable and clean. Since it was fall and rainy outside, we did encounter a few spidery friends in the basement, but that was to be expected. The back yard is lovely and had a ton of room for my son to run around. We saw a few deer there in the morning and if you walk around the wilder area in the back of the yard you'll see evidence that deer are plentiful here. Just make sure to do a tick check when you're back in the house! It was nice to feel like you were "in the country" without being more than a short drive away from downtown Ithaca. If we were ever in the area again we would definitely stay here.
I have nothing but great things to say about our visit to Mockingbird Cottage. We used the house as our main base while dropping our freshman off at Cornell. We had our seventh grader with us as well and the house felt quite spacious for us all to settle in and relax. There are three comfortable beds adorned with luxurious linens. One bedroom is on the main floor with a magical view of the peaceful private yard. The other bedrooms are on the lower floor which has its own bathroom and small living space with a TV and fireplace---perfect for our sons. The kitchen was stocked with all of the necessary appliances and utensils needed to cook wonderful meals. A shopping center with a grocery store, take-out Chinese and a few other restaurants is conveniently located right down the road when wanting to eat at home in the dining room just off of the kitchen. Cornell is a mere five minute drive from the cottage yet we felt like we were a world away when on property, which is professionally landscaped with beautiful perennials. A lovely outdoor deck with comfortable chairs provide the chance to admire the birds and the rolling hills in the distance. We see no reason to stay anywhere else over the next four years when visiting our son and sightseeing throughout the Finger Lakes region. This cozy cottage was the perfect fit for our family's needs.
My husband, adult son, and I just returned from a 4-day stay at Mockingbird Cottage.
The rave reviews printed here probably do not do it enough justice. The house is simply wonderful! A big question mark for me was the comfort of the beds; you sort of expect the beds to be less than great, and you just hope it's not too much less...Well, I needn't have worried. The beds were perfect: firm mattresses, and to top it off, gorgeous and tasteful linens. There were towels galore (large and plush). The backyard of the house was just gorgeous; the deck (with comfy Adirondack chairs) was a perfect place to sit, looking out at that wonderful garden. The location of the house couldn't be better: just minutes from downtown Ithaca, very close to wineries, breathtaking gorges....yet even though it's so close to everything, it's on a quiet country-ish road -- perfect combo! We phoned the owner once regarding the propane tank that needed filling, and Tim was over to do it promptly. I mentioned after our stay, to Suzanne, that I thought the main floor bedroom could use blinds or thicker curtains to keep out the light, and she responded immediately by saying she plans to do just that.
Honestly, we were sorry to leave, because there was much more to see and do in the area, plus we wanted to stay in the house longer!
We plan to go back to the area next year, and I wouldn't think of looking elsewhere, because this just can't be beat.
We truly enjoyed our stay at Mockingbird Cottage. The home has 2 baths and 3 separate living/family rooms. This makes it ideal for families that might like to spread out a bit. The deck and patio offer additional enjoyable space. Our group included myself, my husband, my daughter, and my mother-in-law. Plenty of room for us all ! We were thankful to have a location with such easy access to Cornell. A truly great vacation rental property ! Our thanks to the owners for a wonderful stay !
This house is adorable! Perfect size for our family with wonderfully comfortable beds and pillows. Nicely updated country house. The kitchen is very well stocked and the house was very clean. Beautiful view out of the back of the house, perfect place to spend with family. Very close to Cornell. I would give this house 4.5 stars but I was not given that option, only reason it's not a 5 is that the tub/shower area needs redoing which I'm sure is on the owners to do list seeing that every other detail has been tended to. We definitely would rent again. Loved it!
