Overview

Nuevo Arenal House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Arenal (also called 'Nuevo Arenal') is in a less visited area of Costa Rica, between the towns of Tilaran and La Fortuna. Within easy reach are the Hanging Bridges of Arenal, Lake Arenal (windsurfing, sailing, jet-skiing, fishing), an Eco-Lodge (bird-watching, rainforest trails, hiking, horseback riding), boat trips to Monteverde, white-water rafting, canopy tours and rappelling. The amenities of both towns as well as the world-famous Tabacon Resort and Arenal Volcano lie within less than 45 minutes easy drive.

You have the best of both worlds - a secluded, beautiful and quiet paradise with all the amenities within easy reach. What is more, in Nuevo Arenal, we enjoy the perfect climate of 80ºF during the day and 65ºF in the evening, with a soft, refreshing breeze all day long.

This beautiful detached bungalow sits in its own gated grounds, complete with gardened terraces, private pool, and sweeping views of tropical rainforest jungle, Lake Arenal, and the hills of Monteverde beyond. You literally wake up to the sound of Howler Monkeys and Toucans every morning! You can linger in our pool, take a pleasant walk on our garden terraces or in the jungle beyond, or be more adventurous with the dozens of activities offered in La Fortuna, a short drive away.

In the evening, you might try one of our many restaurants nearby (the world-class 'Gingerbread' restaurant is within easy reach, and also nearby is the famous 'Caballo Negro'), or enjoy a romantic dinner at home in the seclusion of your own private mahogany-furnished dining room, as you watch the sun setting over the lake.

Our private property is perfect for couples, each of our three bedrooms having its own self-contained bathroom. You have access to the world with free WiFi Internet, telephone, fax and photocopier, computer with printer, and SKY satellite TV. There is also an impressive collection of DVD movies and an extensive library with books on local travel, cuisine, nature and history.

While many of our guests do enjoy all that the area has to offer, many choose to spend an entire week languishing by the pool, enjoying our beautiful gardens, lake/jungle view, local wildlife, birdwatching, hiking, horseback riding, or just sleeping-in!

About Kathleen Grove

We offer a unique vacation rental experience, from the moment we meet you with keys and a welcome basket, a tour of the property and generous information about our beautiful area. We have been managing this property for ten years now, and our guests return year after year.

Kathleen Grove purchased this house in 1995

Why Kathleen Grove chose Nuevo Arenal

The location is simply stunning; we are on the bank of Lake Arenal facing south, with towering trees to the sides and back of the property to give total privacy, yet the house is located in a gated community with good neighbors only a few moments away. Shopping and excellent restaurants are only a few short minutes' drive from Neuvo Arenal, and the area is rich in activities including zip-lining, horseback riding, white water rafting, hiking and fishing. Sometimes the nicest day of our stay is when we choose to relax at the house and watch the myriad of beautiful birds that come to our feeders, listen to the wild parrots as they fly overhead, try to spot the howler monkeys and just let the day flow by as we relax on the covered deck and enjoy the freshest air we have ever found anywhere.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The home and site are more beautiful than the photos and descriptions show. It was the perfect stay in paradise with the natural rainforest fiews and gardens. Waking up to the sounds of monkeys, exotic birds and the sighs of humming birds and tucans was amazing. The location was ideal and near any adventure activity that could be desired. The property managers were extremely pleasant and accommodating. Just spending the day on the property was a joy as well as a satisfying experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to visit Costa Rica. I will definately go back on my next visit.

Like being welcomed into the exotic home of friend

  • 5 of 5

This was a great beginning to our 16-day trip - like being welcomed into the exotic home of friends. Overall rating: 5

House: 4.5 - The description barely does this place justice. This is a real house, cool airy design & easy to keep clean. Huge comfortable beds, nice seating areas and outside spaces, and an amazing, ever changing view of the lake nearby. Lots of DVDs, satellite TV/radio, etc. The washer and dryer were a godsend after rafting. The unheated pool was a little cool for our Green Season stay, but our two 10 year-olds used it every day anyway; I bet it's perfect during the hot season. The internet was down, but we weren't craving email that early in the trip, so that wasn't a factor for us.

Kitchen: 4.5 - Not a big fan of electric ranges, but this kitchen was still a pleasure. Nice size fridge w/good freezer, range, and oven, with lots of pans, utensils, and appliances. I really enjoyed the adventure of working with the local supplies to make some pretty good meals.

Location: 5 - Elegant base for day trips to Fortuna and other adventures, though Monteverde is better as an over-nighter (we did it on our way to Manual Antonio [property 150823], which worked well, though I don't recommend the hotel Helaconia). You do need a car to get around. We alternated horse riding, rafting (class 2-4), & zip-lining w/days at just hanging out at home. A few nice walks near the property: we saw howler monkeys, lots of birds, and some truly wild bugs (mantises, moths, grasshoppers, etc.) up close. None of the bugs seemed to be biters despite the lake being so close. There are a few nice restaurants within 15 mins drive, though we generally ate in.

Welcome: 5 - The owners stayed in contact with lots of great information, answers to questions, and suggestions. They, and their rep in country, really went out of their way to be welcoming. Billing was easy and spread across two payments, which was nice. The price was a real value!

More than advertised

  • 5 of 5

Casa Gavilan ranks TOPS on m VBRO rental experiences. This property is gorgeous. The pictures do not do it justice. Ed was so helpful. We were delayed arriving which caught us having to drive the windy roads at dark, nerve racking. Ed met us along the road and guided us in. He also had us the essentials for breakfast and feeding the birds, our favorite activity.

As I said the house is amazing, superior decor, extremely clean, wonderful landscaping and views. The wildlife kept us entertained. I think our biggest food expense was fresh fruit, for us and the birds.

The Arenal location is a little off the beaten path, perfect for R&R. We stayed for three weeks, took on 2-3 adventures a week. Otherwise we stayed at "home" relaxing at the pool, walking the neighborhood trail, or maybe a trip to town for bite to eat and an Imperial beer. Locals are so friendly. Definitely eat at Moya`s and hang at Karacters. Pick up some homemade yogurt or cheese at El Estatblo. Our faves were back 142 towards Tillaran, La Rana is less than 2 km for breakfast and dinner, love Mr. Riner. The food is very good and he feeds the birds by hand. Further down the road is Casa Delagua for breakfast and lunch.

We booked most of our activities through Los Camps in La Fortuna. They are associated with Los Lagos Hotel and Spa next door, with every booked activity you get a free pass to the Hotel pools, springs, restaurants and bars. That felt great after the Sky Trek zipping.

I could go on forever. We'll be back.

Loved Casa Gavilan!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 8th trip to Costa Rica and this is the nicest place we have ever stayed. The house was beautifully furnished, we especially loved the beautiful prints of frogs above the couch in the living room! It immediately made us feel like we were in the tropics!

The kitchen was the best stocked kitchen I have ever seen in a vacation rental. The use of a cell phone while we were there was also a nice touch.

It was still pretty rainy and cool when we were there so didn't use the pool much, but it looked really inviting. The only drawback for us was no rail to hold on to getting in and a bit difficult if you are elderly or disabled which my husband is.

We did have problems with the internet, the listing says there is a computer there, but unfortunately it was not usable and I only brought my tablet. The wifi was just not strong enough for my tablet most of the time so it would time out if I tried to go most places on the internet... i.e. online banking. Next time I will bring my laptop as it does have ethernet access to plug into. I think that would be fine.

Overall our time there was amazing! The property manager Ed is exceptional! We will definately be back!

Wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 4 nights with two other couples and had a perfect time. The house is well-furnished - and lovely as well. The owners, along with the property manager, Ed, have thought of all the details to make the stay as comfortable and easy as possible. There's plenty to do in the area, of course, but one of our favorite activities was going horseback riding just up the street. Apparently, we encountered more rain, clouds, and wind than usual at this time of year, but it wasn't cold and didn't dampen our activities very much. Ed is really helpful and was a joy to talk with. Also, we wanted to have dinners cooked for us, and Ed put me in touch with another expat, Jeff, who is a former chef. Jeff, and a friend of his, Elizabeth (from Panama), cooked absolutely spectacular dishes, with a Central American flair. They were friendly and helpful, going out of their way to plan and prepare menus that we won't forget for a long time. To show our appreciation, we insisted that, on our last night there, they sit at table with us for dinner too.

A home with a heart

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED Casa Gavilan. So far it is my favorite place we’ve stayed in Costa Rica. We are so grateful to Kathie and John for sharing their home with us. It reflects such love. It is clean, comfortable, has wonderful gardens and unbelievable birds. It really is a home with a heart.

And the birds. Oh, the birds. We haven’t been anywhere in Costa Rica where we saw so many birds, so close. I almost don’t want to say much about it because it was such an incredible surprise when we woke up and saw them all…but you gotta know. It’s amazing.

We heard howler monkeys every morning.

The first night we arrived, we’d arranged to have Jeff Lore and his wonderful assistant Karen make us dinner. We are all picky eaters (of the 6 of us, 3 were gluten free and 5 were vegetarian) and they made us a delicious meal—so our road-weary selves could just eat and go to bed. It was such a treat.

The care-taker Ed was kind, patient and helpful with logistics and questions, including probably too many email questions before we arrived. What a team. This was our home-base for exploring the Arenal hanging bridges (kind of expensive but pretty), hiking Arenal (wonderful!), hiking in the Volcan Tenorio along Rio Celeste (my favorite—really magical), soaking in the hot springs at EcoTermales (terrific), climbing to the Cerro Chato rim & swimming in the lake at the top (beautiful but very difficult and a bit dangerous of a hike—I would NOT do it on a rainy day) and some of the gang had fun on a canyon trip.

I would definitely come back if Time & Providence would permit, and would highly recommend it to anyone. Thanks so much, Team Gavilan!

Perfect Solitude and Location

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at the house and we love the location, the quiet and the opportunity to commune with nature. The house has 3 nice size bedrooms and bathrooms and its own pool. We thoroughly enjoyed swimming everyday. The addition of the poolside terrace was what the house was lacking and now the house is almost too perfect to leave. We have already planned our trip back next year. We can't speak highly enough of the house and Ed who looks after the house and the owners. Nuevo Arenal is only 5 minutes away and has everything that you need to make your stay enjoyable.
