Thanks for the wonderful accommodations in beautiful Kauai. Our Favorites…Swimming and snorkeling at Tunnels Beach with turtles. Sunset swim at Ke’e beach, sushi and fresh fish from the Dolphin restaurant, shave ice from Wishing Well and hiking the Kalalau trail to Hanakapai beach and to the waterfall upstream from the beach. OUR FAVORITE COMMENT TO DATE - For this Hawaii-raised girl, this place was a dream come true! For twenty-eight years I had wanted to show my husband Kauai, and I could not have asked for a better location, accommodation, or host. From the day I called Mark to make reservations, through the actual stay, the entire experience was a first-class treat! Mark's attention to comfort, style, and details was phenomenal. He has thought of and provided everything for a perfect and relaxing vacation. And I mean everything! All you need are a swimming suit, a change of clothes and a few groceries. This is old Hawaii, plantation-style living at its finest and just exactly what I wanted my husband and boys to experience. You can't beat it for romance and setting. We were lulled to sleep by soft rain, and we awakened every morning to the soothing sounds of the river. The large property, extensive surrounding gardens and lush, tropical landscaping offer tranquility and complete privacy. The interior design is upscale, tropical, and comfortable. Mark hasn't missed any detail in decorating either! You can't help but relax and move naturally into 'Hawaiian time' mode. The property is located on the north end of the island within ten minutes of the famous Napali Coast and its challenging and breathtaking hiking trail, as well as one of the calmest and best snorkeling locations on the island. Within minutes the other direction, you have Hanalei Bay, Hanalei Valley and Princeville. Water sports and other activities abound in this locale. But every night we had the privilege of returning to the best vacation retreat house on the island, if not in the state! Honestly, it was difficult making a decision on whether to just 'hang out' there or be busy tourists. The accommodations were only surpassed by Mark's graciousness as a host. He was responsive, attentive and patient to all of our needs and questions. Thank you, Mark, for extending perfect 'aloha' to your guests! If you're looking for a unique and authentic 'real Hawaii' experience, this is your place. For the price, it's a real bargain! If you're looking for just another predictable upscale hotel, and a vacation spent with hundreds of other travelers, go to Princeville or Poipu. But I highly recommend that you skip the ridiculously pricey St. Regis and stay at River Estate. You can go enjoy a delicious lunch or some Plantation Iced Tea on the St. Regis balcony to say you've been there. I could write volumes on River Estate. My husband fell in love with the island and now has a particular affection for this place. He's trying to figure out how he can get transferred there for his work! If we had to live in Lihue, we'd still rent Mark's Guest House on the weekends! My starving college student son thought he had died and gone to heaven. My sixteen-year old son (who has a very critical eye and strong opinions) now uses River Estate as a measuring rod by which all other accommodations are evaluated. To date, none have measured up! And we're already making plans for a return trip next year. Again, thank you Mark, for helping an ex-patriot fulfill her dream. You really know how to spoil your guests and provide them much-needed rest and rejuvenation. You also know how to show them Hawaii living at its finest. Remembering your place and your hospitality gives us precious memories and something to look forward to. Mahalo!!

Let me be your personal concierge. Whatever you need I'll arrange for you. Need good solid local information? My 43 years of local experience here can be put to good use anytime you want. I enjoy helping people. It's my job....
I visited Kauai in 1970 and stayed on and basically never left. The charming people of Kauai and the exquisite beauty enticed me from my very first days on the island and I'm grateful every day to be blessed to live in such a wonderful healthy environment amongst such wonderful people and such a vibrant culture. I enjoy helping people and I'm available to my guests on a 24/7 basis. It's an honor and a privilege to be able to serve my guests by providing my home to so many of them and helping them to discover the wonders of this magical place. Fortunately I'm able to say that this place is still the paradise I found so many years ago. Mahalo and Aloha.
Mark purchased this estate in 1972
River Estate is a completely unique experience. Where my property is on North Kauai is in arguably one of the nicest areas of the whole state and quite possibly the world. Because there had always been interest in short term renting here I decided to turn both homes into a vacation rentals. There are certain places on the island and in Hawaii that are so special that people from all over the world have heard about them and have a desire to visit them. Not only is Kauai so very special, I believe Hanalei and the surrounding area is the very best Kauai has to offer. Although I have lived here for 40 years I have not forgotten the feelings I first felt when I arrived here. These are the experiences that lock this place in peoples hearts and minds and keeps bringing them back. It isn't the things you do here but the actual island itself, it's charm and it's local people that bring visitors back time and time again.
Utmost is the seclusion and romance of the botanical gardens of the property and it's convenient location in the scheme of things here on the north shore of Kauai. It's very close to all the world famous beaches north Kauai is noted for and central between Hanalei and the end of the road at Ke'e Beach. The fact you can use the river to access the beach from the house and ocean is not offered any where else on Kauai as far as I know. The privacy and natural setting allow our guests to experience a truly relaxing and rewarding time away from their normal lives and leaves a lasting impression of what some consider to be true paradise. Not many rental homes in our price range are kept in the condition that the Guest House is kept in and our guests reflect that in their comments in our guest book. We're proud of that. It's our stock in trade so to speak.
We were able to book four wonderful nights at River Estate and could not have asked for a better place to stay while on Kauai. This is our first trip to Hawaii and we decided to spend the first part of our honeymoon on the north shore. River Estate is perfect! Romantic, private, comfortable and luxurious all in one place. So wonderfully secluded we felt like we were the only people on the island surrounded by jungle. Kauai is just gorgeous and the views from every part of the island will never get old. Cook your meals here. There is nothing more relaxing than being out on the lanai drinking local beers to the sound of the river. Thanks Mark for such an amazing start to our honeymoon. We can't wait to see what else Hawaii has to offer but we're also very sad to leave! We will never forget our time at River Estate and will definitely be bac
My wife and I stayed in both houses during the ten days we were here, and they were both extremely clean, comfortable, with wi-fi, air conditioning and all the modern amenities you could want in spite of the fact that it is in a jungle on an small island in the middle of the friggin ocean!! Oh, how I wish I was there right now. A part of us never left and yearn to go back asap.
Really enjoyed our time here. We love the north shore of Kaui. The guest house was in a perfect location. The location right on the river was super nice. Very peacefull! Love the privacy of this beautifull home. The home was perfectly equipped for us. One of the beds was bit soft. The owner told me he has since replaced this bed. We definately plan on going back.
We enjoyed staying away from towns and heavy tourist areas. River Estate offers an area of mountains, beautiful beaches and rivers. The River House is exactly as depicted on the website. Meticulously clean with no signs of wear/tear indoors or out. Dogs bark and roosters crow whenever they want but just welcome it, they are easy to tune out! It did not matter to us. Roosters are everywhere and seem to own the island anyway!!!! The only thing I do not recollect seeing on the website was a green house right next door to the red River House. The neighbor was very quiet as were we, so no one bothered each other at all! The guest house is just a few yards away but completely out of site. You can see the river quite well from River House, but you can hear it from the Guest House. The owner takes great pride in this home. It truly shows! Mattress in the master is wonderful! A/C in the master is great. We used it only when we retired at night. The house is very comfortable all day with just the fan on in the living area. This area of Kauai is great, the people are very kind and helpful. All your needs and most of your wants are just down the road, a few miles. There are mosquito's around so we were thankful for all of the screens and screened in lanai. Reserve and go, you will not regret it!
In our imperfect world, we found our stay at River Estate to be a fulfilling, fun experience. The setting is romantic, the accommodations are modern and immaculate, very comfortable with peaceful sounds of the nearby river flowing by. The spirit of a place- important to any traveler or for those just pulling the plug on vacation- is blissful, you'll be surrounded with well attended beautifully landscaped gardens. A short drive to any number of wonderful beaches. You'll find yourself bliss-ed in exotic tropical settings that offer excellent value and privacy! Can't wait to return soon!
We stayed in the Guest House for 4 nights, after spending 10 nights at a wonderful beach house just down the road (that cost $35/night more). We expected to be in an idyllic garden setting that would give us a different (but still great) experience from the beach. The Guest House was generally tidy and reasonably well appointed. The bed was comfortable and the bedroom was pleasant. The appliances and equipment worked fine.
However, overall we were disappointed because the house and property didn't meet our expectations, particularly considering the rave reviews we'd read. While we were there, it was so humid the first night that everything inside the house was extremely wet the next morning...two of our laptops stopped working due to the excessive moisture in the house and they didn't dry out enough to work again until after we flew home several days later. The wifi access was unsecured. Kitchen cabinets wouldn't stay closed and there were other signs of poor quality materials and workmanship. One of the kitchen cabinets under the counter had not been cleaned out and contained spilled packages of food from a prior guest. The master bathtub was badly rusted out in one corner. There were screens on the windows but the bugs were relentless in coming in every time the door was open for a few seconds, and we couldn't be out on the deck in the evenings at all. (Although we recognize that weather is outside of the owner's control, we didn't have the bug and humidity problems during the prior 10 nights just down the road.) The house had a land line but no cell service, which was problematic for us as we needed to be accessible by cell/text for work and family reasons. This should be better communicated on the vrbo listing. The house did not have a dead bolt on the door and we did not feel that the property was secure, especially since someone stole the propane tank for the barbecue grill from just outside the door while we were there. In the evenings, we could hear the people in the neighboring property yelling obscenities and fighting.
We wanted to like the River Estate but there were just so many things that disappointed us. We regretted making the move from the beach house and would not recommend the River Estate to others.
Peace-filled, kind, comforting. Symphony of baritone frog, strident roosters, and quiet--no sound--surround you. The yard is very pleasant in the morning. Sit by the slow clear stream behind this home while birds feast on guava and java fruit (which sometimes plunk into the river), enjoy the flap of banana tree leaves across the road, or practice tai chi. The tall ti plants with purple leaf crowns are a constant comfort, graceful, beautiful, and strong. The leaves (luau) once wrapped goodies baked at the prime Hawaiian feast. We found ourselves getting up early and just listening on the lanai, keeping the doors and windows open. We didn’t want to busy up all our days. This is a clean, well maintained and elegantly presented home. Kitchen is well stocked, former guests keep the cupboards unbare. We added to the offerings. The master bedroom is gorgeous—spacious, very comfortable bed, hardwood floors (throughout home), lovely view out its sliding glass doors to its own deck. The two bedrooms on the other end of the house are lovely—with views, places to sit on small porches, tasteful furnishings. The owner, Mark, knows how to decorate with quality—antiques, solid furnishings. No bargain basement feeling here, whatsoever, lots of attention to detail. And oh so clean and fresh. Great water pressure in showers, amazing really. Lots of white towels in the linen closets and beach towels too. Washer and dryer in utility room that both work very well. So easy to feel right at home the very first day. We hung out here and felt happy, even blessed. Mark leaves all that you need at the beach—mats and chairs, boogie boards, handy cooler for packing drinks and lunches. Because the North Shore offers so much to its visitors, we stayed local—great restaurants and bars in Hanalei, many hikes and beaches, cute little places to shop in town. We were very impressed with how friendly and helpful the merchants were to us. But at day’s end, you’ll be glad to return to Riverhouse and its seclusion, its quiet, its beauty. Soak in the feel-so-good hottub on the lanai, open your pores to Aloha time and the peace this slice of paradise offers you. Mahalo Nui Loa, Mark, for this gem. We shall return to Riverhouse and practice Aloha in between.
