My family and I had an amazing time while staying at this property. The description was accurate and to my surprise even better than I expected. The house was very clean, well-mainted and the interior decorating was so cute...very beachy. Working with the owner was a delight. He was very easy to work with, provided excellent customer service...an all around nice person. I would recommend this property without hesitation. Anyone looking for a very nice and affordable place to stay - you have found it with this property.
Loved the house. We have had a wonderful stay so far and are here till saturday. The kids are having a blast and it's a beautiful home. Thank you for opening your home to us
I recently had the pleasure of coming to stay on Holden Beach for a friend's wedding. My son, daughter-in-law, daughter, and grandson shared the Lion's Paw house (lower level) with our friend and her son. The owners told us to make ourselves at home, and it was easy to do. We had more than enough room, as promised, and the location was perfect for our family. My daughter and I loved sitting out on the boat-dock, and we spent several evenings as a family, on the deck overlooking the water, as my son played guitar.
Beach access was only a block away, and the neighborhood was clean, safe, and friendly. The property is well-kept and tidy. This is a home-like atmosphere, and the owners attended any questions or issues we had, promptly. They really made us feel like we were just friends who they had welcomed into their home, and neighborhood. They offered us use of their bikes, boogie boards, and other toys while we stayed there, and even let the kids "borrow" their dog Abby, for a visit.
I would recommend this property to any friend looking for an economical home-like place to spend vacation. It's only half a mile from the pier and Haley's ice-cream shop (A can't miss), and only a block from the ocean and all it has to offer. Our favorite beach was at the northernmost point of the island - there you will find quiet coves, great shelling, and a chance to "walk on water" across a slightly submerged sandbar, all the way to another island. I also enjoyed a guided kayak tour at Summertide Adventures Bird Island tour from nearby Calabash. e are really beach people, and didn't go to many restaurants etc. We cooked , ate in, and even baked cookies at our home-away-from-home. Our favorite treats were to Haley's Ice-Cream shop and Sunset Slush stand, down by the Pavilion. (Be sure to check out the free local concerts at the pavilion on Sunday nights, as well. There is so much to do here, if you are on a budget! We will definitely return to Holden Beach, and Joel and Dana's home will be our first pick for accommodations.
We have been staying at Joel and Dana's place now for about 4 yrs, going in all 4 seasons of the year. This is my second review see ("sittin on the dock")
As I see the new, and only negative review, I felt I had to comment. You have to remember this is a rental just as any other on H.B, meaning many people use it.
We were there the week after (7/13/13) and DID NOT encounter any of the problems the previous reviewer mentioned.
Walk down or around the corner of house to Laundry ? Yes! big deal,!! You can walk to the beach but can't walk to the laundry room?,REALLY? Weeds leading to laundry room?, in 4 yrs, I have never seen the grass not having been cut anywhere.Shared Laundry?, it's a Duplex!! If you stay at a hotel do you pay to do your laundry? again yes!
In the good reviews here, and in the comment books in both upper and lower units,You will see everyone says how great a time they had, and enjoyed the house, EACH and EVERY week!!!..
Joel and his family are super people and will help with anything they can "IF YOU LET HIM KNOW.".. He does offer a good deal ,and a nice home,to boot!! The canal, and close walk to the beach can't be beat.!!!
Every place on the beach could use a little upkeep I'm sure, as once again, they are ALL RENTALS
We love the "old style " beach house feel that this duplex provides, as I have been a beach bum for 40 yrs, with my parents owning a house like this, back in the 60's, 70's,early 80's until "Hugo".It too was used by many renters, when we weren't using it ourselves and did show the "'usage" that all rentals do as well.
.We consider This Homey Beach House as "our home away from home", just as does Joel and Dana. and we treat it as such!!
If you want a five star hotel, I suggest you look at the more expensive rentals on the beach, and leave Joel's place to those who will appreciate the home and the way it is!!!
I write this review to deter anyone who may decide a "no go" due to one bad review on a very nice rental unit,on the canal, with fish cleaning station, boat dock and 3 minute walk to the beach.A very nice rental in my opinion. If I were to add anything it would be a ladder on the dock to use after swimming in the canal to help get back on the dock for those who can't jump!, yes! you can swim in the canal!!
Thank you for taking the time time to read my lengthy review in the end ,I hope it helps in your beach going decisions, and not let 1 bad review turn you away!!!... Jerry McClanahan
Unfortunately, we were not pleased with this rental. The duplex is in need of maintenance. The TV color was almost gone and was impossible to watch. The vertical blinds in all 3 rooms need to be replaced. . The sliding doors going outside to a very nice porch and view would barely open and close Only 3 burners worked well on the stove, one burner was partially collapsed. It was advertised that it contained a washer/dryer....however, these appliances were located in a small cellar which could only be accessed by going outside the house and walking thru weeds . Washer and dryer were coin operated and shared with renters in the other unit.. very inconvenient as you would have to check several times to see they were available. This unit could be much nicer if better maintained. We have been staying @ Holden for several years and this is the only house we have ever had to give a negative rating.
What a relaxing time! Joel did a fantastic job of describing the home, as it was everything he said and more!. weather was great, Fixed the crab pots (3), and crabbed every day, even tho channel water was cool, managed to catch 24 which was good for this time of year. Rope broke on 1, I thought "oh no", but found an old anchor in laundry room, and fished the pot back out LOL!!.added some new rope so enjoy your crabbing!.We planned on 3 days, but ended up staying 4 weather was so nice!. had an oyster roast with the downstairs renter on Sunday night. yummy!! Rent either up or down, you WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!! Can't wait to go back.. Again Thanks Joel and Dana for sharing your home... Jerry M.(WV)
