About Alyson

Alyson and Sean:

We have spent the last 23 years restoring this place!

So its been a labour of love......

The stone built house was built in 1872 for the Parish Priest on 4 acres;so in early days - it was self sufficient. We had sheep but they kept running the moment we have 2 quiet donkeys!

It has commanding views over village and undulating rural countryside.

We are at stage where our 4 children have flown the nest;but come back to roost at every opportunity!

We try to be self sufficient- we have garden, keep bees, make wine and beer and get milk from local farmer, get our turf from local bog. There is not much else we need!

Alyson purchased this cottage in 1986

What makes this cottage unique

Quiet,rural,unspoilt place.

Undulating countryside; there is a bronze age ringfort on the hill beside us;in our field we found remains of 'Follach Fiadh' or 'Deer Hole' - this was a cooking place during bronze era.

Local friendly people.

There is a sense of place here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We will remember the night the David and Zach (father and son) arrived;they had been in Tara,Meath, and Kinvara,Galway before arriving; it was raining;so we were determined to have turf fire burning with lots of heat in Cottage!

We asked the following day if they had a good nights sleep - to be informed that they slept in late! And we think after that their itinerary went out the door - they were happy to stay in cottage and explore local scene! We felt very comfortable in their company - indeed on their last night here - we had them for drinks in our (old!) kitchen!. Looking forward to seeing them again!

Beyond our expectations

  • 5 of 5

It was the first visit to Ireland for my partner and my first as a tourist (not family). We could not have been happier with our choice of Old Parochial House for location, great accommodation, and most of all Alyson and Sean our wonderful hosts. They took the time to make us feel welcome and at home and we enjoyed several chats with advice on places to visit and history of Ireland. Our balcony looked out over the fields of a neighboring farm, which thrilled David who had grown up on a farm here in Canada, and every evening we were able to enjoy a glass of wine and bathe in the peace and tranquility before dinner. Thank you both for making our week in Co. Clare a memory to treasure. We would both highly recommend this property to anyone who wants to spend some time on the west coast and enjoys country living. We found it easy to make day trips to Connemara, Dingle, Cork, Limerick, Ennis, Burren etc. The quiet really was deafening!

Owner's Response: Hello Mary and David! Thanks so much! It means a lot - we hope we are doing a few things correctly! In a way we felt as if it was like a "homecoming" for you both. David helped save the hay in field next door with our neighbours; and Mary - we felt as if she was here previously - she understood what we were saying about our culture and lifestyle! We will not forget both of you! Slan! from Alyson & Sean

Well & truly a wonderful week @ Old Parochial House!

  • 5 of 5

This was my 1st visit to Ireland (& the beginning of lifelong dream trip to Europe, dubbed my Grand Adventure). I felt very fortunate to book @ Old Parochial House. I loved its history & personality; the host family was warm, welcoming, knowledgeable & informative about the area, & always available (yet never intrusive); the accommodations (the Stables) were roomy, clean & comfortable; & its location was ideally situated to explore this part of Ireland.

My daily excursions took me along the western coastline from Kilbaha Bay to the Cliffs, Aran Islands & beyond, &/or inland along country lanes lined by rock walls & hedgerows where I discovered farmhouse ruins, small ancient graveyards, rolling hillside meadows, classic blue/green Emerald Isle vistas, & villages/communities with interesting sounding names like Cahermaclancy, Knockacutteen & Ballyvaughn. My progress was often delayed by photo ops; 2 favorites were of a rainbow over an inlet near Liscannor & of cows grazing beside a fairway-neither golfers nor animals seemed perturbed by the presence of other. Everyone I met was friendly, kind & patient with this visiting stranger from across the pond, who sometimes became misdirected or turned-around while driving on the "wrong" side of the road :)! After each day spent exploring, I returned tired but happy to the quiet, comforting & reassuring haven of Old Parochial House. This extra safety net proved to be an important & unexpected benefit for me: a lone female traveler of mid-years.

I cannot say enough about the wonderful hospitality to be had @ Old Parochial House; you would be hard-pressed to find better! Alyson especially was always helpful, attentive to my needs & went "above & beyond" with her assistance in averting a rather disastrous health issue that could potentially have ended my adventuring before it had scarce begun!

Giving much due credit to Old Parochial House, I thoroughly enjoyed my Irish experience from beginning to end, rich with memories, blessings & gazillions of pictures! Indeed, this 1st week of my Grand Adventure set the stage for the remainder of my journey; it would seem the Luck of the Irish stayed with me throughout, as I traveled on to new people, new places & new things.

Thank you! (Go raibh maith agaibh! Is my attempt @ Gaelic expression correct?)

Owner's Response: Well what can we say! We are truly delighted that Patricia took time out to write such kind comments. She remembers us a year later and we remember her as well! When you get such meaningfull comments - it makes all the work worthwhile and we must be getting some things right! Bye & Thanks! Alyson & Sean

We were several hours late yet Alyson and Sean were gracious to us. Our cottage was lovely, we stayed in the Stables for 12 days. The countryside was truly Irish green and the sun shone till almost 11 PM. It was warm and dry during our whole stay. Alyson helped us get to boat trips and libraries and the cottage was well equipped with many pamphlets and maps. It is self catering so you will need to shop for groceries and paper products. Cooraclare was close to visit many wonderful sites.

Owner's Response: Zoe and Denise really "let the world go by" at Old Parochial House Stables Cottage! All there plans were revised and preferred to see the local sights, as well as - Dolphin Watching at Carrigaholt, Loop Head Walks. They preferred to relax but helped no doubt by the beautiful constant sunshine that existed for the duration of their stay.

We stayed in the Stables for two weeks. The pictures and descriptions contained on the web site, as nice as they are, cannot do full justice to the beauty, serenity and comfort of the Old Parochial House! This marvelous property is located in one of the most beautiful spots we saw in Ireland. I loved the history of the place and how well that was maintained in the renovation of the stables. We stayed two more weeks in Ireland and staying here for half of our trip was one of the best decisions we made. Plenty to do, wonderful accomdations, warm and relaxing environment. We rested and visited Clare Co. at our leisure. We enjoyed the narrow, winding roads that took us from small village to small village along the most beautiful scenery. Our only regret we were unable to meet Sean and Alyson as they were on holiday. We were well taken care of by their three lovely and gracious daughters. it was such a pleasure to meet them! Afric--we watched the Nationals and were SO excited when Clare won!

A true Irish experience

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in the Shibeen cottage from July 13-July 20. I was immediately greeted by Sean and the cottage's dog Penny, a friendly and lovable dog. Sean and Alyson are knowledgable, courteous hosts. The Shibeen is clean with all the necessary amenities provided like pots and pans and a french press for coffee. The only compliant that I have is there's no wifi in the Shibeen except for laptops. Other than that, Cooraclare is within reasonable distance to all of Western Ireland's attractions like the Cliffs of Moher. I visited Galway, Dublin, Inis Moir (Aran Islands) and more local towns like Kilrush. Kilrush is a cute little town within 10-15 minutes from the cottages with a large supermarket for grocery shopping. I also ate at Turburity's three times, twice for dinner and once for breakfast. The place was recommended by Alyson. They have delicious food for reasonable prices. Overall, my experience at the cottages was favorable and I would definitely come back!

Beautiful Week in Cooraclare

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I arrived Sunday AM. We stayed in the Coach House for a week. The cottage was cozy and clean and really out in the country. Alyson and Sean were wonderful hosts, interesting and helpful. It is a great base for touring the Clare area. Loophead is beautiful as was Kilkee Beach. We also took the ferry from Doolan to the Aran Islands (specifically Inis Mor) which was a wonderful experience. Kilrush is a quick drive for restaurants and the large grocery store. A quick walk takes you to Tubriddy's where we had a traditional Irish breakfast and 2 wonderful dinners. O'Keefe's pub is across the street which was also a lot of fun. The owners at both establishments are very friendly and accomodating. We also enjoyed the resident pets, Penny, Pesht and Nancy! We would definitely love to return again one day.
