Photos and Description of the Sandy Point vacation house rental
House, 5 Bedrooms + Loft, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 18-23)

Chateau Mer is located in Sandy Point, Maine, a town of 50 people, at the mouth of Penobscot Bay. The owner is Franco American and named the house in honor of her heritage (Sea House). You can see the site of the first Franco-American settlement (1602) across the bay. You will have your own private cove on a 2 mile long sandy beach with screen house and postmodern found furniture and fire pit. You may also tent on the beach. It is 30 miles from both Bar Harbor (Acadia National Park), and Camden (home of the tall ships schooner fleet), and 3 miles from the NEW Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory. Chateau Mer is a perfect place for touring mid-coast Maine.

Chateau Mer is very unique property built by an artist/professor and engineer; including a Brazilian granite counter in the kitchen, a nine piece stained glass light sculpture in the great room, a handmade tile grotto bathroom and fireplace in great room and Mexican suite full of objects d'art found on travels throughout Latin America. There are two decks and the entire water side of the house has ocean views.

The Nest is a new additional option on the Chateau Mer property.

The Nest is the owner’s apartment on the second floor of an adjacent building on the Chateau Mer property. The Nest has access to same ocean view, 2 mile sand beach and wildflower grape arbor retreat. It is a creative and unique cozy one room with futon couch bed, mini kitchen, shower, fabulous inside fireplace/BBQ and greenie toilet. It is a great opportunity for privacy. The Nest is available for $700.00 week during August and September if a stand alone rental. If you are renting Chateau Mer, the Nest is available for $400.00.

About The Owner

Barbara is a Maine native. She lived full time with her children at Chateau Mer for a decade. She has owned the cottage for 30 years. Dr. Barbara Bridges is a professor at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota. She has made a career in online teaching and learning.

Barbara's relationship with teachers, students and schools began in Maine where she started teaching art in 1976. She has worked with teachers, artists and students since that time in Maine, Mexico, the Caribbean, and in Minnesota.

Barbara holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Minnesota where she taught and supervised student teachers for 5 years, interacting with over 50 metro area school and teachers. Barbara was named 1998 Minnesota Art Higher Educator of the Year by the Art Educators of Minnesota. Her doctoral research focused on cross-cultural iconography—how cultures see themselves and represent themselves with symbols (sometimes called "art"). As her students will testify, multiple perspectives and their implication on school pedagogy are a primary interest of hers. Allyn and Bacon recently published her Paradigm Deconstruction Charts.

Dr. Bridges is also an artist who uses the Modernist themes of rootlessness, lack of identity, solitude and social fragmentation to create a style of historiographic, record keeping , community building artworks with their roots in postmodernism. These assemblages, which she stylistically identifies as "recoradari", focus on a quest for self knowledge through symbolic identification and manipulation of traditional art materials and techniques.

Why The Owner chose Sandy Point

I am a Maine native. Chateau Mer was my family home. You will find artifacts from my 60 years on the planet at the cottage.

What makes this house unique

This is not your typical rental. I have left everything in the cottage. You will have selections of 40 spices, food in the pantry, a gourmet kitchen, toys in the toy cabinet, 30 games in the game cupboard, wood in the wood box, beach toys, walking sticks, fabulous art and more. Just bring a jacket and a bathing suit!

I intend to give Chateau Mer an honest review. And to be honest, it is an absolutely wonderful light-filled house and setting. It has been modernized with every convenience; plenty of kitchen supplies, great laundry, etc. Huge picture windows open up the glorious view and sunrises. Yet the feel of an old Maine cottage is maintained. The owner wants nothing more than to make your stay a great one. Ours was a first time adult family reunion complete with grandchildren. That table is worth the rental alone. It sat our entire family + guests. . So often one rents a large capacity house and there is nowhere to enjoy a family dinner together, which should be the civil end of your exciting day.

And your day will be exciting even if you don't visit the many great nearby venues. (Don't miss Acadia on a clear day - start early). Down a long stairway though the hemlocks, you come upon a long sandy beach and a spot for fires and s'mores at night and kayaking (do bring) on the gentle ocean of this inlet. The beach has a wonderfully private feel. The huge deck above is perfect for deck activities, and has a beautiful new gas grill. Also a perfect spot for the grandparents to enjoy the family below.

Rainy days were no problem. A wonderful fireplace, lots of wood, tons of games, lots of places to sit all over the house. There's a room for any mood, as it were. Need a crowd? Huge living room. Need to be alone? Lots of quiet places. The cousins loved their own sleeping "attic" which is so filled with things to play with, we were amazed. Even a costume box for putting on plays! So many owners put things away. Barbara fills her lovely, creative, fun and funky home with things to see and enjoy. (Even be amazed at!) If you're thinking of renting Chateau Mer, be honest with yourselves; if you are not willing to respect, enjoy and maintain what's here, go to a cheap motel. We want it to be just as special when we return.

O.K. Honest review: cons. Could use some more chests for clothing. If the owner is at home in her house just above, she seems ubiquitous. I'm sure she has no intent to intimidate, but she cannot avoid being quite close to your activities. But, hey, you're not renting an island!
We had such a memorable time. Thank you, Barbara
P.S. Would be a terrific spot for a group of adults, too.

Owner's Response: Reading these comments makes me know I have done the right thing in not removing all the trappings of the lives my children and myself. People have been so respectful and seem to enjoy all the surprises.

PS...I DO have a little garage apartment but I am rarely in residence when I am renting the cottage ; ) !

Large family visiting Chateau Mer in July

In late July our family and extended family had the wonderful opportunity to visit Maine. We chose to stay at Chateau Mer, because the large number of beds worked for our group of 14 people. We enjoyed being so close to a semiprivate beach, about 50 steps down and we had access to a nice beach area that included a fire pit, chairs and table, not to mention wonderful views.

We were able to do a lot of activity locally, including golf, kayaking, casual dining and shopping. We had the opportunity to purchase live lobsters from a local lobsterman (14 fresh, good sized, live lobsters for under $55!) and cook them in the supplied pots at the Chateau. We had ample seating both inside as well as on the deck.

We visited Bar Harbor a few times during our stay, which was about an hour door to downtown. At Bar Harbor we were fortunate to have a wonderful whale watching tour with lots of whales sited. We enjoyed renting bikes and scooters while touring Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We all enjoyed the Bar Harbor restaurants and wonderful Microbrews. Visiting Acadia National Park is a must and we regret not being able to spend more time there.

Additionally, some of our group toured a winery, distillery and microbrewery in some of the locations off route 1 and route 9. Just a wonderful time!

Guests should be advised; the check- in and check-out times are to be adhered to and we were given some responsibilities for check out, including trash and bed stripping. Also, there is no access to television, so if you plan on watching a special event, remember to record it prior to departure.

Owner's Response: It was fun to read all the day trip fun the Pacitti's enjoyed. Yes, my property manager is an 80 year old retired school teacher and she does really appreciate the beds being stripped and brought down from the third floor! She has a hard time making the check-in time of 3:00 these days.

Re: TV. there is a DVD /VCR player in the air conditioned sleeping loft and a speedy wireless connection for people who need screen time but really, as the Pacitii's share, the real show is outside the doors!!

Chateau Mer was base camp for my family this June. It was wonderful! The view from the deck is amazing and the beach so much fun for little ones and grown ups a like. Easy driving distance to Acadia and most sought out day trips. The home is stocked with everything you will need - including the kitchen which we found easy to use. The beautiful table fit all of us with space to spare... really fantastic to all sit and enjoy our meals together. Lupine and other wildflowers were in full bloom in the front yard, we loved them! Thank you, Barbara and Sara! Your help and understanding is greatly appreciated. We really enjoyed staying at your home!

Rejuvenating spot on the water!

We spent a week with family and friends at Chateau Mer at the beginning of August and found it to be a perfect place. The house is well laid out for a large group, and the deck and long table in the great room made wonderful spots for entertaining. There is a large wooden platform (could be a stage, but we didn't have time to put on a show...) down at the shore that held everything needed for a sumptuous feast, and we had several big dinners down there. I was surprised at the quality of kitchen ware (although I wish I had taken sharp knives) and the copious amount of plates and glasses (very little plastic!). Sara was very helpful in telling us about the area and offering her assistance if we needed anything. The price of lobsters was very low (poor lobstermen!) and we ate our fill, a rare luxury for us since leaving Maine 40 years ago. Acadia, only an hour away, provided us with wonderful day hikes and bike rides as well as a day at the beach with big surf. Barbara's adirondack chairs on the hill across the street were a favorite coffee spot-for-two in the morning where we could enjoy the beauty of Maine in quiet serenity. It was hard to leave!

My wife and I stayed in this house from October 14, 2009 thru October 21, 2009.

It would be difficult to improve upon the location of this property if you are looking for a very comfortable & private home, equidistance between Camden and Bar Harbor. The amenities abound…excellent working fireplace, private beach, great kitchen, large deck with a spectacular view, etc…

The owner (Barbara) was easy to work with and the local care taker (Sarah) was very pleasant and helpful. What a great way to experience Maine. Thank you Barbara and Sarah!
