About Jane Schapka

Native of Muskegon and resident of other states and countries, Jane knows the hidden gems of Muskegon and Western Michigan and appreciates the people and customs of other states and countries.

Jane's interests are many -- past President of Muskegon County Genealogical Society, professional family history researcher, violinist here and abroad, retired social worker, and former college adjunct teacher. She lives only 20 minutes away and is 'on-call' during your stay.

Jane Schapka purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Jane Schapka chose Muskegon

In historic Bluffton neighborhood, the best location in the City of Muskegon, sandwiched on a narrow peninsula between Lake Michigan beach and Muskegon Lake.

Eagles Nest cottage is the only rental cottage on famous Pigeon Hill, where neighbor children play on the huge dunes and pigeons roosted. Although it's only 12 stair steps from street level, no one else lives up there, and even the air seems different -- fresh, and on a windy day you can hear Lake Michigan waves. Miles of forest dune is the view north, and it's all yours while you are there.

Eagles Nest has the best of both worlds--away from it all on the dune, and just 12 steps down, you have access to all fun, beaches, highways, necessities, and quick trips to other beach towns.

What makes this cottage unique

Shady patio 2 footsteps from cabin is on a forested dune where you have privacy and feel like you are living in nature yet can see your parked car below. Just 12 steps down where your car is parked is the friendly neighborhood, so you have the best of both worlds--living in nature and conveniences of the city. Furniture chosen by award-winning designer for comfort and charm. Free kayaks - 1 child, 1 adult - open, flat, for water fun.

We had such a nice time at cozy Eagles Nest Cottage! It was clean, cute and well furnished/decorated. True to it's name, it was very cozy. It's close to the lake on a wooded sand dune, on our first morning there we were greeted by 3 deer which were just feet away from us! We had a great time at Michigan Adventure and at the beach, and we took a boat cruise on Lake Muskegon and through the channel to Lake Michigan. Our 4 and 6 year olds loved it!

Wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5
Our family of four enjoyed the three nights we spent at the Eagles Nest on our way to Chicago. The place was immaculate and very close to the amazing beach nearby. Although you could easily walk, we drove in order to have easy access to beach toys etc. We were only there for three days but we managed to do more than just spend time at the beach. We loved lounging at the cottage and spending the evenings by the fire. We also went to the USS Silversides submarine museum which the whole family enjoyed. We went to Ryke's bakery for their famous doughnuts and baked goods. We went to the Lakeside Emporium which is a very impressive candy store. We ate at Dockers and Bernie O's Pizza which were both excellent places to eat. On our last night we went to Getty's Drive In which was only $5.00 per person on Tuesday nights and was a very fun night. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a cozy and clean place to stay. It is close to one of the nicest beaches I have ever been to. Jane is also wonderful to deal with and is very happy to answer any questions about what the area has to offer.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed the beach, the cottage, and the things to do. Thanks very much for giving future guests some great ideas for their own stay. For your next visit, I recommend the dune stair climb and the walk through the woods to Lake Michigan beach at Hoffmaster State Park. Best wishes to you, our Canadian neighbors! You'll be welcomed back any time.

Very nice cottage. The bed was incredibly comfortable and my husband and I slept well the entire week. The cottage was fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. The outside deck was spacious and great for entertaining.

Redbird a treasure!

  • 5 of 5
This is our second visit to Bluffton Harbor Cottages, and it certainly will not be our last. This cottage is quaint yet stylish, cozy and bright. The owner can't seem to do enough to make your stay comfortable... she's truly thought of every little thing! (She even offers kayaks and lifejackets for your use!) She has a keen eye for interior design, which makes a stay here even more delightful.

The cottage is nestled in a congenial neighborhood, a 5-minute walk to magnificent Pere Marquette Beach. The neighbors are so friendly; always smiling, occasionally stopping to chat with us as we relaxed on the front porch in the evening.

I have to say, I saw the one negative review on this site - and I have NO what they were talking about. Everything is squeaky clean and in excellent working order. The outdoor picnic area has a picnic table, like-new gas grill, and fire pit. The kitchen has every kid of dish and appliance imaginable (there's even an electric pancake griddle!), all in excellent condition. The furniture and beds are tidy and comfortable; the linens fluffy and clean.

Jane, the owner, truly cares that you have fun on your getaway at Redbird... She goes out of her way to meet and exceed your expectations. I would recommend this property to anyone, especially to my closest friends and family!

Eagles Nest served us well!

  • 5 of 5
Jane was so helpful! Everything was found exactly as advertised and we were so happy with the home. It was very clean and so perfectly situated in the area of our visit. Anyone who is looking at Eagle's Nest for a vacation spot, you will not be disappointed! We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary here. Absolutely perfect! While in Muskegon, we visited the beach, the lighthouses, local restaurant on the beach, Pigeon Hill Brewery, The Cheese Lady, the amazing Farmers Market and chartered a boat for an exciting day of King Salmon fishing! I certainly hope the good Lord allows our return.

Owner's Response: We're glad you enjoyed so many things to do. As the only cottage on historic Pigeon Hill, It's perfect for newly weds, anniversary celebrations, or vacation relaxation. Enjoy Eagles Nest comfortable "French Twist" design inside, and private, woodsy "dune view" patio outside. Relax, grill, or just plain chill after a day spent "your way." Centrally located to everything--beaches, biking trails, great fishing, and a bit of history, music and art. We wish you many more anniversaries--you're welcome back always!

Jane was very helpful as we were a "last minute" reservation. Cottage is perfect for a traveling couple; everything is as described, clean and well provisioned. Served as a good home base for day trips, as well as walks to the beach.

Cute

  • 5 of 5
If you are going to Muskegon, stay here - it is clean, cute and a good price. We really liked taking the kayaks out. We also enjoyed the fire pit and walking around in the dunes behind the cottage. The beach is really a 5 minute walk away and a great place to watch the sunset. We also walked to a nearby restaurant at a marina and had a great meal. The owner called to know if we needed anything and was very nice.
