The Property:
The complex also includes private areas such as the main house which is an 1850 Greek Revival structure originally built by Mathew Marshall, a prominent blacksmith in Columbia County. There is a restored barn and chicken house which was converted to an office. There are forest, fields and meadows surrounding the complex where wildlife abound. Visitors can view deer, wild turkey and rabbits roaming the grounds right from their room windows. Spring is a magical time at Vintage East. There are 100-year-old lilacs blooming in light blue, white and purple and the lilac fragrance is everywhere. Fall is equally beautiful with foliage showing bright red and yellow. And bird watching doesn't get any better than at Vintage East.
The Countryside:
The views are beautiful from Vintage East, especially in winter. You can see the Green Mountains of Vermont to the North, the Taconic Mountains and the Berkshire Mountains of Massachussetts to the East and Frederic Church's castle called Olana to the West. You can even see the many church steeples of the City of Hudson rising through the forest canopy below.
Recreation:
There are several nearby golf coarses and three major ski slopes within 30 to 45 minutes. Go horseback riding at nearby stables or hiking in the Catskill, Berkshire and Taconic Mountains. There are plenty of quiet country roads for biking. Fishing is a big sport in the area from fly fishing for Trout and Bass to fishing the Hudson for Strippers. Hunting is a big sport in the area and skeet shooting has become popular at several local locations. There is boating, water skiing and kayaking on the Hudson River with many lakes also available within easy driving distances. And Antiquing in Hudson also provides much recreation with 80 plus antique shops in the area. There are museums such as Olana (seen off the front porch) home to the famed Hudson Rier School painter Frederic Church, the Firemans Museum in Hudson or take a drive to the Shaker Museum. There are local Hudson River Mansions open to the public such as Clermont, Olana, Van Allen, Thomas Cole and Martin Van Buren.
