We had a very bad experience with our stay. The owner withheld a couple of hundreds of dollars from us and wrongfully accused us of the following:
1) The house was left extremely dirty - This is False, we had 12 people working together to clean the house at the end of our stay. We washed all dishes, clean out the frige, took out all trash, and sweep the floor. Everything was placed back to its original location. Also, during our entire stay we took off our shoes before stepping into the house.
2) Ripped full size mattress - This is False - the owner accused us of this and said that the mattress was in such a bad condition that they had to toss it away. We did not see any broken mattress during our stay. We were totally surprised to hear this from the owner. When we ask the owner to show us a picture of the ripped mattress, he stopped responding.
3) 2 missing knives - This is False - we used plastic utensils during our stay. My wife is the biggest clean-freak. We brought our own mugs just so we don't need to use other people's mugs.
4) Broken beer glass - This is True - I saw the glass felt off the table which we will take full responsibility.
Also, the water in the hot tub was extremely dirty. No one in our group enjoyed their stay in this house and a few of them got sick. On top of all this, the owner withheld a couple of hundreds of dollars from us. We will not rent from this owner in the future.
Owner's Response: This group stayed at the Magnificent Mountain Manor the last weekend in November. After vacating, the cleaning service that has cleaned my house since I have been renting the propety, stated in an e-mail that "this was the dirtiest the house has ever been left", after cleaning behind this group. Literally this service has handle over 100 check-out cleanings for me.
I retained 40% of the sum collected as security, refunding the remaining 60% back to the tenant. They were charged for the the additional hours it took to the clean the home, the replacement of the torn mattress pad and to replace the crock pot. I did not realize any gain from the portion retained or charge for my time to replace the items.
This tenant and one other have the distinction of being the only two tenants for which I have ever withheld any portion of their security. I have invested considerable time and money to provide a superior rental property to my tenants. I do not expect the place to be left spotless, but do expect tenants to respect the property.
I am fortunate to be able to state the overwhelming majority of tenants that have rented the Magnificent Mountain Manor have in fact taken good care of the premise while enjoying their stays in the Poconos.
