The apartment with vaulted ceilings is in the medieval Junno district of Monte Sant' Angelo, close to the castle and the basilica and has a balcony providing wonderful views over the mountain. The accommodation has been tastefully modernised in the regional style and contains all modern conveniences, including shower, washing machine, TV and DVD. The apartment sleeps two in the double bedroom and 2 on a sofa bed in the lounge. During August and the Summer months there is folk dancing, parades, children's entertainment and an outdoor cinema in the town square, but this is a place that can be visited all year round. The nearest beach Punta Rosa is 20 mins. away and Monte Sant' Angelo is in the middle of the Gargano National Park, famous for its orchids, the foresta umbra and magnificent walks

Further details for this vacation apartment rental in Monte Sant Angelo, Italy

The National Park: The Forest The Gargano National Park, with its 120,000 hectares of lagoons, mountains and sandy beeches, marine reserves, villages and forests, is one of Italy's most beautiful areas, its natural wealth being enhanced by centuries of history. The Foresta Umbra (or Forest of Shadows) stretches right across the centre of the Gargano massif - 11,000 hectares of pines, oaks and beeches, hiding a rich variety of wildlife, Roe deer especially and is the last remnant of an ancient forest which once covered most of Puglia. The area was designated a national park in 1991 and there are various marked walks through the forest and a Centro di Visita in the middle which hands out advice and information. For more information about the Gargarno go to http://www.parks.it/parco.nazionale.gargano/Eindex.html

The Basilica: From Monte Sant' Angelo you can venture into a landscape of limes, laurels, and towering yews, populated with foxes and gazelles. Narrow passages, streets that are virtually stairways, and little houses washed a gleaming white characterize the town. The site of Monte Sant'Angelo, standing on a spur, commands panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. you might want to visit the Sanctuary of San Michele (Santuario di San Michele), Via Reale Basilica built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. The campanile is octagonal, dating from the last years of the 13th century. The sanctuary commemorates the legend of St. Michael, who's said to have left his red cloak after he appeared to some shepherds in a grotto in 490. You can also visit the grotto -- to enter from the church, go through some bronze doors, made in Constantinople in the 11th century. Crusaders stopped here to worship before going to the Holy Land.

The Castle: The Castle - In the highest part of the town, not far from the shrine, in a dominating position on the Carbonarra valley rises the gigantic and irregular mass of the castle, fortified with solid ramparts of various epochs, which give evidence to its rich history. The castle, which originally served a military function, was transformed into a building of residential character. The tallest rampart that stands out is the very old tower of the giants, given this nickname because it was built with Cyclopean stones. The primitive part dates back to the 8th and 9th Centuries; there was an important transformation with the arrival of the Norman's, when it became the dwelling of the princes of the rule of the Honour Montis Sancti Angeli, bequeathed by the queens who are responsible for the construction of the Norman tower and the Chamber of the Treasure.

What a Place!

A perfect apartment in the perfect and 100% authentic Italian town of Monte Sant Angelo. We met no English speakers in our time there and even the local shopkeepers knew where we were staying!

It's also a perfect base for walking in the Gargano National Park and the Foresta Umbra and their are gorgeous little beaches a few kilometers away.

It's safe to say we fell in love with Puglia and Monte Sant angelo.

Fantastic Holiday

Mark & Janice Lincoln, UK
Review Submitted: October 17, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2006
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The apartment was ideally situated with just a 5 min walk to the main street. Parking could always be found nearby. The view from the lounge window looking away down to the sea was fantastic. The location helped us to feel like we were one of the locals. We found the people so friendly and we managed to communicate even though my Italian is basic. We met some great local people who made us feel so welcome and we went out with them for meals several times.
It was such an excellent location and we can't wait to go back!

Graeme's beautiful apartment in Monte Sant'Angelo

Gary and Madeline San Francisco, California, U.S.A.
Review Submitted: August 23, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
My wife and I loved our stay in Graeme's Monte Sant'Angelo apartment. The beautiful white hilltown is home to what seem to be the happiest people on earth, from very young to 80 year olds (join the Passagiata every night!), and the apartment, while providing the key modern comforts, gave us the feeling of being residents in this still medieval feeling town. It's view of the sea with swallows constantly wheeling around above it is charming and fascinating to watch, while the sounds of cowbells coming up the hill in the morning increase the calm, pastoral feeling. The narrow streets and elevated location kept us cool regardless of the surrounding temperatures, and the town's delicious local salumi, cheeses, breads, olive oils, wines and other food products, and reasonably priced restaurants make for a fun and pleasant stay.
Matinata is a short, beautiful drive away for a fun day at the beach, while the Gargano forest, Vieste and other local towns make for wonderful day trips.
All in all, a beautiful, relaxing and yet interesting way to spend a vacation.

great rental

Review Submitted: July 14, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
After a great trip from Rome we were apprehensive about seeing our apt. as we thought it very inexpensive. We were surprised to open the doors (3) and find a very comfortable, roomy apt. with an incredible view. The kitchen had everything we needed and we cooked all our meals there. Shopping is easy and fun. Prices were much less than the north and the markets in Monte Sant Angelo (SAT) and Manfredonia (Weds) are huge and have everything! we took day trips in all directions and were amazed by so much to see and do. This apt is in a central location to explore the Gargano. At night there were many movies to watch or you can join the locals hanging out on the narrow streets. This apt is located close to everything and you can walk to anywhere in town. We would rent it again for sure. Very cool place.

Italian Job 2008

Lindale Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Review Submitted: October 19, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the apartment at Mont Sant Angelo. It was ideal and exactly what we were looking for a relaxing holiday, it was well equipped with excellent views down to the coast. The road up had numerous hairpin bends, a little tricky first time up - but got easier as time passed. We stayed over the period of the last week in September and the first week in October. It was clearly at the end of the season, but still enough to do for the fortnight. The apartment was located a short walk from where parking was possible – we didn’t have any problems finding a parking space.
We found it a good location for exploring the region and in order to get the best out of the area, would suggest that a car is essential. We flew into Rome, stayed overnight and drove down the following day it was a comfortable four/five hour drive on the autostrada. The apartment was well equipped and ideal for self catering and we primarily used the E.Leclerc supermarket just off the by-pass at Manfredonia for shopping. It was easy to find and well sign posted.
We had a few meals out in Mont Sant Angelo, the restaurants were ok, but nothing special it was clearly the end of the season and not all were open on a regular basis. We went further afield on a couple of occasions. Bari was worth the trip, we did it by train from Foggia. Parked at the station which was quite easy and the train tickets were a bargain at 14.80 euros for two one-way.
Also did the trip to the Tremiti Island again well worth the trip, at this time of year the ferries were only sailing from Tremoli and one trip per day – it took about an hour and a half to drive from Mont Sant Angelo. Had a brilliant meal on San Domino at the Ristorante Gabbiano– the waiter promised the best spaghetti cosse and vongole in Italy and he delivered – it was superb. Worth considering staying overnight, looked good for snorkelling.
In general the meals we had away from Mont Sant Angelo were superb and of a very high standard – the seafood was excellent.
All in all an excellent holiday.
