Overview

Charlevoix Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-5)

On pristine Nowland Lake, just a few minutes from downtown Charlevoix, and located in an isolated quiet valley, our clean little cottage with ceramic tile throughout, is perfect for couples or young families. 600 feet of frontage includes a sandy beach, 2 docks, and plenty of room to stroll around or play. You will enjoy a quiet respite from the busy pace of downtown Charlevoix. Fishing, swimming, and viewing wildlife (turkey, deer, coyote, mink, beaver, eagles, loons, and the occasional shy bear) are the main occupations of relaxing at Nowland Lake. The western view from the cottage provides gorgeous sunset shows and amazingly dark starry nights. Take a one mile stroll up the road and buy fresh produce from Kitely Farm, or take a 7 minute drive into Charlevoix for shopping, dining, festivals, bike rentals, boat rentals, and all kinds of resort town fun. Petoskey, Bay harbor, Harbor Springs, Boyne Mountain, and Traverse City are all within a one hour drive.

Our cottage is part of a condominium, (10 separate cottages facing west toward the lake), with unobstructed western views and 600 feet of direct frontage on the lake. Nearly all owners are 'weekenders', so it's usually very quiet. There are several fire pits available and a charcoal grill for your personal use. There are not many homes on the lake, so it is very quiet. The interior includes tile floors, comfortable furniture, and a bedroom with a queen size mattress. Care has been taken to provide an environment that is more safe for people with asthma and allergies. A shared washing machine and dryer are available for your complimentary use in a separate building.

About Beverly Hardesty

A Michigan native, I have been vacationing at Nowland Lake for the past ten years. My husband and I purchased the cottage in April of 2015. We live outside of Louisville, Kentucky. and have 3 grown daughters, all of whom are happily married.

Beverly Hardesty purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Beverly Hardesty chose Charlevoix

Our love of nature and the serenity of Nowland Lake drew us back to the Charlevoix area over the course of many happy summers. The cottage provides a wonderful place to stay while exploring northwest Michigan's beautiful beaches, rivers and resort towns. We renewed our wedding vows in the summer of 2014 at sunset, just yards away from the cottage's patio, and it was an experience to treasure.

What makes this cottage unique

There is a feeling of seclusion, even though downtown Charlevoix is just a short drive away. The loons are truly unique, and you'll never forget the beautiful and eerie sounds they make at night. Because we're in a valley, far from highways, it's really quiet, and there's no light pollution, so we enjoy a night sky like no other.

Quaint & Cozy

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I were very pleased with the location of the cottage. It is on a small lake, in the country, but not too far to reach the city. Most of the road is hard paved with the last 1/2 mile or so gravel with some dirt, although it is pretty hard pan. The cottage is on a lake next to other cabins, much like a fishing resort. During the week it is extremely quiet with weekenders arriving on Thursday and Fridays.

The owners are very friendly and work hard to make sure your stay is welcoming and they succeed. The cottage has most everything you need, comfortable seating, luxurious bedding in the bedroom, and a nice kitchen area. And with lots of windows on the front of the cottage you can open the blinds and take in a beautiful site of Lake Nowland. In addition, if you care to open the windows you'll hear the occasional loon and other birds. It is so relaxing.

The cottage is pretty clean when you arrive, however the microwave needed a bit of cleaning but it didn't take too long to get it cleaned up. There is an issue with rust in the water, and it makes getting cleaned up a bit tedious. We quickly found the bedsheets and pillows with rust on them. Soon it became apparent our clothing was stained also. I wouldn't let this deter you from experiencing this remote area, however I would recommend bringing dark clothes.

For those of you who aren't from Michigan you are going to meet some fantastic people. Everybody is so friendly. Charlevoix had a concert on Thursday night an earlier in the week they had a movie in the park, next to the marina. This town is truly beautiful and you really do need to experience it if you like resort towns. The food was great when we chose to eat out and there is plenty to do.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. We do everything we can to make our guests' stay as comfortable as possible, and are always available to help with any details. Thank you also for your kind words about Charlevoix and its people; it is what attracted us to the area in the first place. Finally, I am happy to report that the high iron content in the water appears to be a temporary situation, and is being resolved by the president of the association. Looking forward to seeing you again soon!

Ideal spot for a peaceful, clean, comfortable and FUN vacation!

We are so glad we spotted this nice cabin on VBCO. IT is a beautiful little cottage, extremely clean and well-kept with an eye to folks with allergies. The tile floors are attractive and CLEAN. The cottage has every convenience you might need--dishwasher, AC, heat, fireplace, storage space, and a washer/dryer a few steps away. Sturdy and comfortable furniture for us big folks. No steps except one in the bathroom. Wonderful setting with the fishing and boating lake in the front yard. The sound of loons adds to the peace by day or night. A quiet spot, far "from the madding crowd," little traffic, no city lights, deer here and there, farm markets nearby.. We watched the space station pass a couple of nights in the dark sky. Close to Charlevoix though where there is so much to do, as another reviewer mentioned. It's a pleasant drive to Lakes Charlevoix and MIchigan as well as the Mackinaw Bridge and the UP. We enjoyed every minute of our stay--a week in August when the AC was very welcome. Hostess was friendly and welcoming--great cookies!!--and as accommodating as you could ask for. We look forward to going back. Thanks, Melissa!

Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful cottage to rent! I highly recommend it. So neat and clean! We had plenty of linens and towels and I wanted to to take the bed home with me as it was so comfortable. The weather was cooperative and it's so nice and tucked away from the tourist areas. We saw loons daily and even a Bald Eagle! Sometimes at night the water is so calm it looks just like glass. Very tranquil vacation. We look forward to returning. What a fabulous place to stay!

It doesn't get better than this!

Our family has used VRBO to find vacation homes in Florida, Colorado and Michigan over the years but we have always stuck to locations receiving numerous positive reviews. When searching the Charlevoix area listings we found this site, but...no reviews. The description sounded perfect so we threw caution to the wind, took a chance and were greatly rewarded. We could not have been happier with the location, the cottage, the lake and the owners. The cottage is spacious and meticulously clean. The tile floors remove any possibility of mustiness we've experienced in other cottages. Nowland Lake is as peaceful as it is beautiful. The lake is small enough that the surf does not get whipped up by winds which makes it perfect gliding for kayaks. The cottage is a short 10 minute drive (if that) to Charlevoix but is secluded enough that the night sky is not affected by the city lights. We had several clear nights for star gazing and watching the Perseid meteors during our stay. Hearing the loons calling on the lake was another treat. Biking is easy around the cottages since there is not much traffic. But with the lake being located in a valley you'll find a good size hill no matter which direction you go. The Little Traverse Wheelway bike trail will take you from Charlevoix all the way to Harbor Springs if you're a serious biker. Or there is a roadside scenic turnout just North of Charlevoix that is a good place to park and get on the bikes for awhile. Charlevoix, Harbor Springs and Boyne City are all short drives and provide countless activities. On previous trips to the area we had enjoyed Petosky State Park's beach but this year took the Ironton Ferry (just 3 miles East of the cottage) across the lake and drove to Young's State Park at Boyne City. This instantly became our new favorite Michigan beach. The zip line tour at Boyne Mountain includes a ski lift ride to the top of the "mountain" and you then zig-zag your way back to the bottom by way of 10 different zip lines. Or you can do individual zip lines if you don't want the full tour. If you make it to Harbor Springs be sure to save time for lunch at the deli hidden inside Gurney's Liquor store. Be sure to order the secret Gurney deli sauce. You'll never eat at Subway again. A trip to Charlevoix should include watching the draw bridge, ice cream at Murdick's Fudge, and in the evening check out the fountain by the marina. The waters are choreographed with music and colored lights. Thanks for a fantastic week!

You can find Petoskey stones right on the beach, and in downtown Charlevoix you can climb Mt. McSauba in the summer for magnificent views of the coast along Lake Michigan-a must see! The marina downtown is gorgeous at night, and the musical fountain is a delight for kids of all ages, just remember a bathing suit as you splash and play!
