Blake, we had the most beautiful vacation!!! It is a paradise!! We want to come back as soon as possible!!! Casa Tranquila has all the things you need and the decoration is really nice. Raquel
This house was just what we needed for a relaxing week away. The house had all the necessities to cook, although we didn't while there. The opening of Neptunes restaurant just 100 yards away is a huge plus for food options. Otherwise we could catch a quick boat ride back to town for a meal. The diving right in front of the home is amazing. The home is perfect for up to three couples to stay or one large family. We look forward to returning to Utila and Casa Tranquila shortly!
Well, after that last review, I think some issues were addressed & improvements made. The house itself is definitely an amazing work of art. For me, Doctor Seuss-like is a GOOD thing! While there IS a rustic aspect to things, I found the amenities to be totally satisfactory. The brand new refrigerator kicked butt & we found everything needed for comfortable cooking while we were there. A new grill wouldn't hurt, but we made do just fine. It's true, this is not the place for you if you are used to Hotels, Nightlife, & general Pampering....however, if you are looking to get off the beaten path & the most important thing to you is walking out your front door to some AWESOME snorkeling, this is just the ticket. The caretakers, Kris & Gary were always available, not to mention VERY sweet & helpful. When we needed more water, Gary was on it in a heartbeat. Not only was a cellphone furnished(which worked FINE!), but we had wireless connection for our laptop as well. Reception can be spotty at times, but that should be expected considering the location. I can't quite see 10 people being totally comfy in this place, but for 5 of us, it felt luxuriously spacious & I think it could take a few more. You will find very few sandy beaches on all of Utila, but the shoreline is an amazing pileup of gorgeous old coral pieces. The beauty of this spot is that in front of the house, you are treated to a fantastic, white-sand ocean floor. This makes all the difference for being able to enjoy my favorite aspect of the Caribbean, a beautiful bright aqua color. There is a big patch of this loveliness & then the darker waters which have the reef below in either direction beyond that. It really is the best of both worlds. Even though the shoreline is rough, there is nice easy entry into the ocean right out front without worrying about damaging the reef, which is a concern at other entry points. Once you're in, you can enjoy just bobbing around and enjoying the soft, sandy bottom under your toes. The one tragedy of Utila in general is that tidal currents tend to bring in trash from the mainland. It can be a bit shocking at times, but after experiencing it on a previous trip, it still didn't deter me from wanting to return because the reefs themselves are so beautiful & healthy still. They are building a restaurant next door which I think will be nice. It will still be pretty isolated. All in all, I think this is a FANTASTIC spot for a Snorkeling Vacation & we hope to return!
Unfortunately the ad is very misleading. The house is certainly unique and interesting, like a Dr. Suess house, however...There is no boat and captain. You are quite removed from town which is only reachable by water taxi which is expensive. Many parts don't work, including appliances. The refrigerator is apartment size and totally inadequate for a large group. No gourmet kitchen in sight. We ran out of water twice. The grill dangerous. Bathroom fans don't work and sinks cracks. Door sweeps are missing so sand fleas, mosquitoes, snakes, etc., can easily enter. Electricity is very expensive and you're charged beyond a certain allowed amount of kilowatt hours. Seating in the living room is enough for about 4 people, not 10. Lighting is severely lacking, not even enough to cook or read by evenings. One bedroom very crowded with 2 beds, should be just one. A cell phone is provided, but it rarely has signal and you're only allowed a certain number of calls before being charged extra, again. It was very difficult to arrange water taxi rides. Deck/patio furniture is uncomfortable and despartely needing cushions, ditto for the dining table benches. People are friendly and helpful, but the house needs some serious money put into it to make it remotely worth the rate charged. Would we return? Probably not at this point, not unless some serious changes are made. The diving is great, but being so cut off from town was tough, and the beach is very rocky (actually coral) which you need closed-toed shoes to navigate. If the property were advertised as very rustic, good for adventure seekers with an abundance of money, and a much lower price, it would certainly be closer.
Cassa Tranquilla, to be honest, sounded too good to be true, but proved to exceed all of our expectations and more. The house is spectacular, truly a work of art. The people of Utilla are warm and friendly and our host Alex was an amazing young man, a friend forever. We had fresh fish from the cays every day and Bush's grocery store has everything and anything. Drop dead snorkeling just thirty feet off the front deck. I had to pinch myself just to make sure I wasn't dreaming. We go somewhere different every year, usually off the grid a bit. This was the first time we didn't want to come home. We will be going back, perhaps three weeks or a month. I just can't seem to get this place out of my head.
The house was large and lots of room for all of us. The view was spectacular. We spent most of our time relaxing on the front porch, beautiful. We did exactly what we set out to do - RELAX! Even the 5 teenagers loved it; that says a lot.
