We purchased this property for the opportunity to experience all the lake has to offer year round. We had a three season camp we used in the summer and just felt it wasn't time to pack it up in October with the nice weather that still pops up in Novemeber and December and the fact there are still so many things to do in the winter such as ice fishing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and sledding.
The benefits of this property is that while you feel a world away from everything and there is so much privacy and quiet time, you are 10 minutes from town and all the conveniences. It is also always amazing to me how there are many little cottages on the water of this lake, yet I can spend a whole day on the dock or swimming and barely ever see another person. It feels as if you own the whole thing to yourself.
My boyfriend and I rented this place for a brief 4 night stay and it was perfect! There are plenty of places to drive around and explore, and the house itself has a beautiful view and deck, a dock right out to the lake, and very comfortable sleeping places. The thing I probably most appreciated was the affordability of the rental for such a nice place, I know they are doing a lot of improvements on the house which is wonderful but I hope the price doesn't go up too much because we'd love to come back! The complementary canoe and kayak were also much appreciated. We were going to use the grill but then decided against it because it was quite rusty. I'm not saying that you couldn't have used it, we just opted not to and I figured I would mention it. We enjoyed the nearby towns of Newcastle/Damariscotta and Wiscasset, and also went to a hiking reserve at Camden for a day, about a 45 min drive. The owner was also really quick to answer emails and very helpful with all of our questions.
It was a very peaceful place, lots of room and comfortably slept 6 people. The ping pong table was great for Friday night when it rained, the kitchen had everything you need! The dock was good size to lay out and they even had floaties to use and also shared a floating dock which was fun to swim too. The deck on the patio was roomy and easy to have everyone eat and also had 2 picnic tables. Very peaceful, could not have asked for a better place to stay! The town is close and very cute with great shops and good places to eat. Ran out of toilet paper but it was worth going into town :)
We had a great time at this cottage and used just about every amenity available. The weather was fantastic, so there was a little more traffic on the lake (like a boat every two hours would ride by), but nothing to keep you from kayaking.
We found a farmer's market just 10 minutes from the cottage that kept us well fed throughout our stay. We took day trips to Portland and Rockport without long drive times.
The amenities were virtually all as described; the pull-out couch is actually a futon and I wouldn't recommend the loft for anyone over 5'2", but this fit our group of 5 perfectly. The owner was very responsive to any questions sent via email.
We would definitely use this cottage if in the area again!
The listing of amenities included a gas grill, however, the propane tank was empty when we went to make dinner for the 1st time. Apparently propane is the renters responsibility and this was not stated anywhere.
The lake is beautiful. The interior of the house is a little worn. The furniture is not very comfortable (including the mattresses). We were outside mostly, so it wasn't a big deal. We had a few small issues. We had purposely rented a property with a washer/dryer, as we were traveling before and wanted to minimize luggage. The washer did not work on arrival. The owner thought it might be fixed while we were there, but it wasn't. We ended up going to a laundromat, which wasn't the end of the world, but not what we planned on doing. The owner did credit us back $50 without us asking, which I thought was reasonable. The other small issue was the door. It locked, but you could just push the door in. It ended up being fine-the area is safe, but coming from a large city, it made us a little uneasy. Overall, the location is ideal, close to the coast and other sites and the lake is beautiful. With a little TLC, this property could be great.
The Damariscotta area is at the head of the Pemaquid Peninsula which boasts the Maine state quarter's famed Pemaquid Light. The area is vibrant with art galleries, antiques, boutique shops, live theater and outstanding restaurants. Step back in time in the many historical museums and activities re-enacting the way life used to be. Participate as a 'local' in ice cream socials, fireworks, and parades in the summer, Pumpkinfest, and ice cutting in February and maple sugar Sunday in March. There are always countless community suppers, benefits, and silent auctions. Take in the outdoors by visiting the multiple parks, preserves, and sanctuaries. Enjoy the sea with boating excursions and the rivers with kayak and canoe tours. Then visit the tree lined sandy crescent beach at Pemaquid State Park. Winter offers opportunities for snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiing, and ice skating.
