Casa Neza is not your option if you want a quiet, relaxing vacation

I feel obliged to write a review of our 10 day stay at Casa Neza, Isla Mujeres, Mexico, during the December 2012 holidays since we decided to book Casa Neza based on other people’s reviews. There is enough said about the house on various travel forums, and yes it is indeed a very beautiful house, but the location is very noisy. We still managed to have a good time although we had serious problems sleeping from all the noise. We wore earplugs in an attempt to get some sleep. There were also many mosquitoes so that didn't help either.
In terms of where the main noise came from, the 'house next door is some kind of dilapidated “marine supplies store” that doubles as a makeshift bar/club on certain nights. This means a night filled with yelling and blaring music. Even though the island is safe, we were not comfortable when groups of men were standing right outside the gate, in front of the house, drinking, talking loudly and generally acting drunk. A local gang of homeless dogs patrolled the roads at night, barking and setting off other neighrbhood dogs which made for a night full of howling and barking.
At dawn the local cats would engage in fights and calls associated with mating, chasing each other inside the yard and screeching, which would set the dogs on a loud barking spree again. The final insult would come at 5.40am EVERY MORNING: a trio of massive construction trucks parked in front of Casa Neza would start their diesel engines leaving them running for 10 minutes before finally leaving. This would fill the bedroom with the smell of exhaust fumes. Soon after that the constant background nose of taxis, scooters, golf carts and music started. Although this was less offensive and to be expected since Isla is a long, thin island with the main road running in the middle, close by.
We had minor issues with the house, not worth mentioning compared to the noise of the trucks…dogs…cats...makeshift party venue: the Jacuzzi was not working; the pool was cold because between the high wall, the palm trees and the low December sun, it never got any sunshine and the water remained cold, the dishwasher is tiny, the fridge is built in too high for people 5’4”, the hot water is luke warm, and the showers have no pressure.
As I mentioned, we still managed to have a good time because we were on vacation and made the best of a very noisy situation. But if you want a quiet, relaxing vacation with afternoon siestas and lazy mornings, Casa Neza is not your best option.
Owner's Response: Sorry Jasmina, that you and your group had such a noise issue. The neighbour you mentioned is a marine store and not a bar. I have spoken to the owner who I know well and it seems his son who happened to be in town for the Christmas vacation used his Dad's Store to hold parties in. The owner has apologized to us when we alerted him on account of this and promised it will not happen in the future. As for the trucks: we have spoken to City Hall as they are not supposed to park on the street. About cats and dogs, you will find them everywhere on the island although there is a program in existence to deal with stray dogs and cats by neutering them. As owners we have stayed at Casa Neza many times and so have other guest and have not had such an acumulación of noise issues, which you obviously experienced. We are very sorry for that and apologize.
