I am a retired business owner in Calgary Canada.
My wife and I are planning to spend our winters in paradise on the beach of Playa Marsella Nicaragua.
We are also committed to help making a difference, by being involved in the local ecnomy. This. This is why we decided to invest in the Property Management company of San Juan del Sur.
San Juan del Sur Property Management purchased this house in 2002
When my wife and I first visited San Juan del Sur Nicaragua,we fell in love with the people and the country. We decided right then and there to buy a peace of land on the beach of playa Marsella. Over the next three years we build our home in paradise and the rest is history as they say!
We love the privacy of our beach and we also love exploring the country and its unique sites and experiences.
Having the pool by the house is a wonderful way to cool of or to rinse off the salt from the ocean.
The Ranchero offers shade to lounge by the pool while taking in the awesome sunsets on a daily basis.
I had high hopes for this place when we booked it, but it didn't live up to expectations. Maybe we were a little tired at the end of our 3 week family trip. Read on and you be the judge.
You hear the surf pounding all the time
It's great to have a pool (each morning the resident cuidador family scoops out the crabs who wandered in overnight)
It is a pretty nice home by Nica standards (see below for the "buts")
You're pretty much right on the beach, although the actual water is ~50 yards away (no big deal)
The bad: HOT.
The airflow in the house is nonexistent. It is very hot in the home at night, even with ceiling fans and windows and doors wide open. (No AC)
On the covered back porch, there is no breeze, even when the breezes on the beach are good. Again, makes for a very hot experience. A big ceiling fan in this area would be nice.
Uncomfortable beds. Uncomfortable furniture.
The cuidador (caretaker) family lives in the garage adjacent to the house. They're not noisy neighbors per se, it's just that their living space is 3 feet from the bedroom and any activity can be heard plainly. And then there was the night they (or someone) was burning trash(?) and the smell came right in our house.
No water pressure at all in the guest shower.
I had a hard time getting comfortable with the security situation. I have a family with 3 daughters. At night, you have to keep all the windows (screened) open -- doors too if possible. The two guest rooms are away from the Master. So it's just a little hard to relax as a dad. I was assured everything is fine, but it's not like you're in a gated community with an armed guard. Mind you, we had absolutely ZERO issues with safety, but still a dad worries over his chickadees. The cuidador family is on property, which helps. Just go into this situation knowing what to expect.
The just plain weird:
We stayed for 6 nights. I have 4 women in my family. On day two I asked for extra toilet paper, and was told we couldn't have any more. Seriously?? We bought some at the Pali supermarket (20 minutes away), but jeeez!
We were also told we could only have 2 bath towels (family of 5), but then they let us have 5.
The inconvenient truth:
Understand that the home is a good 20 minutes from town. We had been to SJDS before, and knew the location, but we wouldn't choose to stay so far from town again. It's just inconvenient. But that's your call.
Just spent a week at Casa Suicanica and really what a great place. The pictures don't do it enough justice: the yard now has more green and the plants behind the pool have grown nicely too to offer a little green oasis. Great help from Harold and his wife Cynthia who live behind the house: Cynthia cooked our dinners and Harold took great care of the property. They do have a little puppy that likes to hang around the house but they tied him up if we asked them. Great service also from Tony who booked (great) taxis and all. We were 2 couples with 3 children (3 to 6) total and had plenty of room. House has an easy flow. Playa Marsella is more of a locals beach which makes it more authentic, with 2 ranchitos. Vila Mar restaurant (walking distance) has very decent food. It's better to get a car to get around to go to San Juan del Sur (15' away) for groceries (you need to buy your own water after the first tank) and to explore nearby beaches. I would definitely go back.
You have created a paradise donna and peter. I appreciate yours and harry's patience with my many questions prior to the trip. The house is amazing, it is much larger than the pictures seem. This is our first time to nicaragua. Harry has been invaluable as a local resource and go to guy. The caretakers have kept us feeling safe and the house is immaculate. There are two restaurants with impeccable food and service if you don't want to drive/taxi to town less than a few minutes walk. I am writing this while floating on a raft in the pool, watching the beautiful nica sunset with a cold tona in hand. Thanks again for sharing your home you obviously worked very hard to make inviting with me and my family. We are very grateful to be here and will be back!
dear donna and peter
many many thanks for the wonderful days in your house. I felt so comfortable here. One day I will be back :-)
We just returned from a week at this lovely home right on Playa Marsella. Our family of 5, including our 3 teenage boys, had a perfect beach vacation here. The home was exactly like the photos - comfortable, well laid out, right on the beach, and with the perfect hammock for relaxing. Not far from Playa Madera, where our boys surfed each day, Playa Marsella is a calmer bay frequented by Nicaraguans. Absolutely lovely!
stayed 11 days in june of 2010. great location, great house, great beach. great price. truly paradise. the caretakers were very helpful, doing as much or as little as we wanted them to. the generator was a most welcome amenity as we had the typical nica power outages on most days, but our fans, blender and refrigerator ran on. the beach is very secluded and suitable for quiet walks, swimming or playing in the surf ,and beginner surfing and there are also premium surfing beaches nearby, maderas (just over the hill), remanso and yanqui to name a few. the photos do not do the place justice. it is difficult to capture the beauty and convenience of the place in 4 or 5 photos.the pool was just right for relaxing after a day surfing or exploring. we had 4wd and explored a bit but could just as easily never left the immediate area. even though san juan del sur is only about 5 or 6 miles away with a Pali' and nightlife, there are many small restaurants and bars within a 15 minute walk among these ,Casa Pelon just across the river and Mango Rosa had friendly folks and english speaking proprietors. "Casa de Peter", as the neighbors call it is definitely a fantastic place to relax and unwind. can't wait to return.
