We came back to Swans after a 9 year hiatus. This cottage on beautiful Red Point did not disappoint. The view is without compare. The cottage quaint and well equipped. The dog loved the deer that came to graze at 4:30 in the morning and ducks, herons and a pair of loons rounded out the daily sightings. There is a murder of raucous crows that claim the back yard if so much as a crumb finds its way to the grass near the pond and the trout in the pond jump clear out of the water in their quest for bugs!.The owners are kind as well as helpful.Wish we could have stayed a month! Lobster tastes better on Swans than any other place on earth and there is never a shortage of things to explore or beaches to roam.Swans is not for everyone, but it is for those who love the sea for its raw beauty and those who appreciate a quieter way of life!
We just came back from our one week stay in this place. It is very nice. We went with another family. The kids had a lot of fun on the sand beach and pebble beach. I would highly recommend it for a quite and slow family time.
The rooms are clean with great views as shown on the pictures. It feels wonderful to wake to a peaceful ocean view.
Owner is very nice, answer all questions in time.
Slow time on the island. If you are able to find fun in nature, you are going to love it like I do.
Sand beach has clean water and many shells to pick. Few people on the beach.
Nice people on the island. Wave to everybody drove by or walk by.
No cell phone signal, at least for verizon. ( I didn't mind it).
Gabage drop off is inconvinent.
My wife and 5 children had a wonderful mini vacation at this property. The views from the upstairs bedrooms were simply outstanding and we all fell asleep to the moon over the ocean which could be seen right outside the windows. The house was well equipped and the owners were very nice and followed up with us frequently prior to our visit. Swans Island is a great place to go escape. We loved the local library and the views from the lighthouse were also outstanding.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at this property on Swans island during August of 2010.
-Very charming, clean, well-maintained property. Private, wooded location.
-Bedrooms are spacious with clean, comfortable beds.
-Incredible view from the deck and bedrooms. Beautiful sunrises.
-Well appointed kitchen with grill and gas boiler (perfect for lobster) on the deck.
-Price. Even during the high season, the price of the property is VERY reasonable. And given the sleeping capacity, could be downright cheap for 2-3 couples.
-Information. I was forced to place multiple calls to the realtor/representative's office just to get the street address and driving directions to the property. Much of the information about the property is in a series of handwritten notes on the refrigerator. It would have been nice to get most of this information before arriving, or at the very least, compiled into a couple of printed pages. Example: Renters are supposed to remove their own garbage, but that would only be apparent if someone read all of the info on the multiple notes. We ended up having to move our garbage, as well the previous occupants' to the dump at the end of our stay.
-Beach. Or lack thereof. The oceanfront portion of the property is a seawall built of large round stones. They are pretty to look at, but treacherous to walk on. It was frustrating to have such a nice view, but no way to enjoy the ocean from the property itself. There are nice beaches within a 15 minutes drive.
-Damp basement. Even with two dehumidifiers running, the basement smelled very musty. We slept upstairs, but would have had a tough time in the basement bedrooms.
-The pond. The yard between the cottage and the seawall has been thoroughly dug up to put in a pond. While I am sure this will be an attractive feature in the future, it is a work in progress and is not represented in any of the photos of the property.
-Make ferry reservations 1 month in advance. While the island ferry can accommodate up to 16 vehicles, reservations are allowed for only 4 cars per trip. Reservations make the process MUCH less stressful.
-Bring absolutely all food and drink you will need for your stay. The only exception is fresh seafood, which is cheap and plentiful on the island.
-We found cell phone coverage at the cottage pretty weak. But the signal improves dramatically closer to the ferry terminal.
Clean, clean - mold and dust free - full kitchen wonderful new furniture and oh the view. Newer house that was very clean with large bedrooms and new mattresses. Water views that we sat on deck and admired for hours. Family of 4 - my boys played monopoly for 9 hours one day (who knew they could do that). Bring everything you will need like cooking oil & all foods- linens provided are nice and clean. I brought my own favorite cooking pan. Washer & dryer - be ready to conserve water. Forced relaxation for busy executives - reconnect with your family - hiking and exploring - grade schoolers paradise. Live the cliché and lose your sense of time. Many different types of beaches on island - bring your camping clothes & study shoes to climb rocks. Bring mountain bikes and kayaks if you own them. Launch Kayak at the Carrying Place beach. Try to print an island map before arriving. Shop at Hannaford market in Ellsworth on your way to Bass Harbor ferry - bring cooler. Make ferry reservations by phone & use credit card. (ME state ferry) One room store on island sells milk & eggs. Be ready to waive at all passers by. One seasonal place (The Boat House) to eat lobster and the best fried clams. One seasonal breakfast lunch place. A vacation everyone should experience at leas once. Leave your tech toys at home.
Swans Island is a 35 minute ferry ride from Bass Harbor on Mount Desert Island. Once off the ferry the home is about two miles so you will need a car. The ferry costs approximately $45 for a passenger and a car round trip and then about $14 per person for passengers or walkers. You can bike to the house from the ferry if you choose to bring bikes instead.
