Sitting atop a small hill overlooking picturesque Menemsha Basin, this charming cottage was one of the first buildings in the area in the late 1800's. Originally built as a fisherman's camp some distance away, it was moved to its present location with log rollers and oxen in the early part of the twentieth century. Since that time it has enjoyed many additions, most accomplished since our family acquired the house in the 1940's. What guests can expect upon
arrival is an appealing two-story wood-shingled cottage located within a five minute stroll of the beach, docks, fish markets, restaurants large and small, general store, fishing jetties, charter boats, and much more.
The house, furnished largely with antiques, maintains much of its original charm. The rooms have painted old wood floors and plastered walls, and lots of windows to let in the fresh Menemsha breezes and views. It's NOT a 'big' house -- the rooms are all fairly small -- but there's plenty of room for conversation and relaxation.
Upstairs is the master bedroom with a double bed, small 'smart' TV, DVD and assorted furniture; a bathroom with lavatory and toilet; and a den with a large built-in desk, closets, and built-in (slightly short) single bed. The upstairs views of Menemsha Pond, Lobsterville and Vineyard Sound are spectacular. There's an enclosed staircase down to the first floor parlor, which in one direction leads into the living room with fireplace, and the front porch, and in the other direction leads into the kitchen. There is a bathroom with shower stall also off the parlor, with a stacking washer-dryer. The kitchen is an old addition to the main house, about 8' X 15', with open stud walls and a pitched plastered ceiling. It has a refrigerator, 20' electric range, microwave, and sink (no dishwasher). It's well supplied with cooking and dining utensils.
In addition to the main house there's a 12' X 14' cabin with two twin beds, lots of books and a cold-water sink (no toilet! Use chamber pots and the main house bathroom). This is a great spot for kids to sleep and hang out. The outside shower (hot and cold) on the back side of the cabin has become a guest and family favorite for daily bathing.
The private back yard, framed by an old stone wall, is a great place to sit in the morning and soak up the sun with your coffee and paper or to charcoal grill your fish in the evening for dinner. The front porch offers a comfortable spot to view the famous Menemsha sunsets. Everything you need is within a five-minute walking radius, so you can leave your car parked most of the time -- but you'll want to keep it available for the five-minute drive to beautiful Lucy Vincent Beach or Squibnocket Beach on the ocean (town passes available to tenants).
The simplicity of the house may not appeal to those not ready to detach from the intensity of their daily lives at home. We do not have cable TV (though there is a small 'smart' flat screen TV capable of receiving internet streaming and DVD player). Cell phone coverage is spotty for Verizon & Sprint but good for ATT. Cell phone access improves as one drives 'down-island'. We do have wireless DSL internet access.

Notes: Before selecting the dates of your stay we advise you to check for the availability of car reservations on the Steamship Authority ferry. You may click on the link at the bottom of this page to get to the Steamship Authority website. Note: Should you be unable to secure ferry reservations for your car for the dates you're interested in, or if you just prefer to leave the car behind on the mainland, there are some good alternatives for transportation. Bring your bicycles with you -- you can get everywhere you need to go with a bike and there are many wonderful bike trails on the Vineyard. Or use the Vineyard-wide public bus system which has expanded greatly in recent years. Alternatively, just take the bus from the ferry to Menemsha and walk! Everything you need is within distance of a short stroll from the house.
Rentals start at 2 PM and end at 10 AM on Saturdays to allow time for cleaning in advance of new guests' arrival. On the availability calendar below, if you see a day checked as 'occupied' followed by available days, that day is available after 2 PM.
We ask that guests bring their own sheets and bath/beach towels. We supply blankets, pillows, mattress pads etc.
The rental rates listed do not include and the actual costs are deducted from the Security Deposit:
