Review Text: "We love Northern California. Mendocino has been our

favorite for years - so we were hesitant when we decided to venture South to

Gualala. But, we must admit this place is absolutely a gem. Spectacular

Views, Lots of Sunshine, Abundant Wildlife and the quality of this

home is tough to beat anywhere.

Like others here, we stay in lots of homes when traveling and

traditionally stay in the very best we can find. But, 'Serendipity' is a

masterpiece of fine living. Secluded, yet easily accessible to all this area

offers. Fine Shopping, Great Massages, Dining, Parks, Canoeing and

Beautful Beaches. Wineries are all over the area and you'll love a glass in

the relaxing hot-tub, that like the rest of the property is well

positioned for privacy and views.

In todays world it's kinda neat to spend some time in a home powered in

part by solar energy - and realized you have sacrificed nothing in

comfort, and leave feeling a bit smarter in the process.

Ethan Allen furniture, hardwoods, granite and stone...this place is

perfect for any length of time, any time of the year.

Lastly...a vacation is hard to forget when you come home refreshed and

feeling you had made a great choice. The owners are available, helpful

and the perfect hosts - although you may never actually see them. Every

detail is perfect and the beds are to die for.

If you like the best - you'll love this place!"

A Surprisingly Wonderful Vacation Home

3rd times a charm

  • 5 of 5

what a getaway!

we came here for our 3rd stay, a relaxing weekend before the busy holidays in Dec, and love it even more

the drive up from SF was scenic and breathtaking, with hwy 1 hugging the coast and waves crashing, and sheep/cows roaming the green sonoma hills. but the approach to the town of gualala, past the river dumping into the pacific, is my favorite

the owners, rick and teresa, were so friendly and attentive. upon making our reservation, they checked in with my wife and i and passed on their updated recommendations about the gallerys, restaurants, and cute well-stocked market in town. in fact, as it was the christmas season, they told us about the performing arts center's holiday concert. this was fantastic! open to the public, a beautiful building and grounds, singing, bell choir; our 2 young kids loved the appearance by santa and homemade cookies!

but then we arrived at serendipity. WOW!!

craftsman style with shingles on the outside, exposed wood, and bedrooms at either end on the inside. amazing beds. the pictures of the views don't do it justice. the central windows are huge, complete with a relaxing ~3x30 foot window seat/bench, and are the center piece of the great room. this open kitchen/dining/living room nicely focuses on the waves crashing on the sandbar from the gualala river. we started and ended our days on this bench. as other reviewers noted, the kitchen was fully stocked, but our little ones were most excited about discovering toys, games, animals, projects, and tons of movies in the drawers under the window seat. well that, and the hot tub on the back porch. who doesn't like a hot tub in the afternoon on a winter day??

it did rain on/off for the 3 days, but this only added to the charm and reinforced our desire to stay at the house. we just didn't want to miss any of the waves! we were completely entertained at the house: relaxing, napping, reading books and coloring/making our christmas cards. we arrived to deer in the backyard, saw tons of otters and seals in the brackish river water, and even made some home-made ornaments for ourselves as souvenirs. my wife even had a nice solo-adventure exploring a couple galleries and the crafty shops full of tons of fun house/art stuff just down the road

we had so much fun that none of us wanted to leave...writing this review makes me miss it more.

Its such a great family/entertaining house, and we can't wait to come back!!

thank you rick and teresa

Absolutely the best!

  • 5 of 5

We decided to spend Thanksgiving on the coast with another couple and the four of us started looking for a home to rent. We could not have chosen a better place. It is a beautiful home with an incredible view. We felt so comfortable there....Craftsman style, which we all love, very tastefully decorated, a huge window seat and a very well stocked kitchen, which was important since we love to cook. The owners were so helpful and accomodating. They even bought a new roasting pan for us to use. We keep talking about what a wonderful time we had there. My husband and I have rented a lot of different places in the Mendonoma area but this was, by far, the best. We're hoping to spend more time there in the coming year.

Fantastic house in a lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

We could not have asked for a better stay. The house is very clean, beautifully appointed and well stocked. All the books and guides to the local area were especially appreciated. The setting is fantastic. We loved going to sleep and waking up to the sound of breaking waves and the calls of all the birds. Can't wait for our return visit!

Couldn't have been better

  • 5 of 5

It was even better then the pictures show... my wife and two young kids plan to make this home a tradition. Perfect spot, perfect size, amazing views throughout the home. From the moment we walked in the door and saw the beautiful ocean view through the enormous bay windows we were hooked. Then to realize from every room the breathtaking scenery was right outside the glass there couldn't have been a more tranquil place. Our family spent 4 nights here and didn't in any way want to go back to the "city" life. We were able to cook together, talk with each other, laugh with each other, and just enjoy each other. In a busy hustle and bustle life you never realize how enjoyable those simple moments are. Serendipity allows you to enjoy the simple things in life. The sounds of your kids running through the halls, waves crashing on the surrounding sand dunes, the smell of ocean and some good home cooking, all make this house a home. Every memory we made here will stay with us until our next stay in this beautiful serendipity home. We hope the next families to stay, or friends create just as amazing memories as we have and will.... Katherine & Jason Huff

It's the VERY best....

  • 5 of 5

I don't like the word "miraculous" because in the vast majority of cases it simply overreaches. Our 2-day stay at Serendipity was miraculous. This is a wonderfully-designed home in a fantastic location on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, at the mouth of a river, yet. From the deck we saw deer (duh!), multiple mama whales with their calves in reach-out-and-touch proximity, a peregrine falcon perched in a pine tree for 15 minutes just off the deck, beautiful sunsets and a connection with coastal nature that cannot be duplicated anywhere. My wife and I (60's) spent the time with her parents (mid-80's) and we were all thrilled. There are nice-enough restaurants in town or up the coast, but plan to eat your meals in the house. Bring your food or buy it at the local market and everything else is at hand. The owners of this house designed and built it to be lived in and absolutely everything you will need is provided. There are numerous opportunities close at hand for hiking, biking, kayaking and other adventures and Mendocino is only a few miles up the road. Trust me...you won't want to leave the deck.

P.S. I haven't even mentioned the hot tub which, on a clear night, gives a best-ever view of sky and ocean (stars visible to the horizon). And it works!!

You will not be disappointed.
