San Diego Vacation Rental house

We booked this home advertised as " luxury gated estate." We arrived for a week over last Thanksgiving. The home was filthy upon arrival. Dirty dishes, opened food in the refrigerators. Duct tape on the "new" furniture. Hair in the changed sheets and towels (beds were made as if clean). Holes in the walls, rusty bath soap dishes, moldy shower on and on. Smoke detectors were open with no batteries.
The owner refused to come meet with us and immediately told us there would be no return of our money. We had a family of 7 and food for the holiday, where could we go. We washed all the sheets and towels ourselves. And eventually 5 or 6 hours later three cleaning people came. They were only allowed to work 2 hours as instructed by the owner. It was better but the disrepair could not be changed by cleaning.
The facilities at the home were fantastic but not maintained and dirty. The grills were filthy, the pots and pans though put away were dripping with grease as were the fronts of cabinets. WIne glasses were cracked. Washers and dryers great to have but lint screens were packed full of lint. Obviously there was no oversight of this property with huge potential.
The gated estate was a wood fence hanging from one hinge when we arrived. Three huge trash cans were packed full in the driveway.
We also rented the lock off apartment above the garage. It was equally awful and the bathroom was horrific. Food on the floor, under the sofa. The bicycles available for our usage had no spokes in the wheels.
This experience was a nightmare. It is hard to understand how there are several reviews that are so positive but do read them all before considering this property. Others do back up our experience both with this property and its owner.
