David & Nora are longtime residents of Hilo. David is a master wood bowl turner and built our homes and gardens here in Hilo. Nora is an CNS, MSN, RN, traveler, animal lover. We lived in Alaska for 18 great years prior to moving back to Hawaii to raise our family of a son and 2 daughters. Love our home here in Waiakea Uka and sharing it with friends and family!
Nora Waters purchased this house in 1999
We found this 3 acre Waiakea Uka property after months of searching on the east side of the Big Island. It is a dream come true for us to be able to live here and share it. The climate is wonderful; the breezes balmy and the night delightfully cool. Night rains keep our plants lush. We love animals: our dwarf Nigerian goats, chickens, 2 dogs and cats, and so do our guests. We live a casual life, grateful for all we have. We work hard to keep everything clean, comfortable & welcoming for our guests so they can just kick back and enjoy themselves!
Sunny days, cool nights, nightly rains that keep Hilo GREEN! Hundreds of rare palms, our bee hive, our ponds, lilies and lotus flowers, and other seasonal bloomers: orchids, vireyas of many colors, ti, hibiscus, brugmansia. David's wood shop. Beautiful walks up the hill and grand views of the ocean from Hilo Bay to Kapoho lighthouse. The company of friends, family, animals and the god sent trade winds that keep us a unique spot on earth. The lovely drive up to the house with striking views of Mauna Kea, Panewa Forest, & Hilo Bay. Driving to work at 6am is a joy, and how many people can say that? We are grateful for this very special spot and hope you enjoy its unique perspective on East Hawaii.
the place. We loved the walk up the hill about a mile with the spectacular view down across Hilo Bay. Great view from the lanai and quiet sitting was the best. Beautiful clean elegantly decorated place! Loved it! Can't wait to come back! Thanks Dave and Nora
Nora & Dave
Thank you so much for your hospitality. We loved the cottage, and everything was GREAT!! I loved how open it was. Great views !! The wildlife was great ! Your helpfulness was much appreciated. Hope to stay with you again, next time in Hilo !
Thanks so much
We stayed here for one week. The bedroom was clean and expansive, the resident cat always around to greet and be petted by us. The bathroom facilities were excellent and well stocked with towels, soaps, etc. The kitchen also had lots of extras like spices, staples, coffee, etc. We enjoyed sitting on the very private deck and watching the sun rise and enjoying the evening environment. While this place is not in downtown Hilo, it is very accessible to the major tourist locations. When we left, we somehow goofed and left some luggage. It was shipped back to us in just a few days. What a relief. Stay at this place if you like up country solitude. It is wonderful.
This is the best VRBO rental we have ever stayed in. The 1100 sq. ft. house is very comfortable, extraordinarily well equipped, private, and reasonably priced. The acreage itself is a delight to the Canadian eye, especially in winter. It is really a mini-arboretum with dozens of varieties of palm trees and flowering shrubs, and masses of flowers everywhere. Dave and Nora, the hosts, could not be more welcoming or more helpful. If your aim on a Hawaiian holiday is to spend your days on a beach and your nights at a club, then stick to Waikiki because this is not the place for you. If, however, your ideal Hawaiian holiday is to live in a private tropical garden, shop for fresh fruits and vegetables at a local farmers’ market, and count the orchids growing in the ditches as you go for a walk up a country road, then Noe’s Nest is the place for you. It was for us.
The Nest is quiet and roomy, with a gorgeous view and easy access to Hilo, Kilauea and the mountains. The property itself is a botanical paradise, planted with significant tropical trees, ferns and flowers. The kitchen is generously appointed, with several local cookbooks for inspiration - we cooked here every night.
If you're interested in woodworking, then you absolutely must talk with Dave, a master craftsman and longtime member of the western Hawai'i woodworking community.
We'd recommend this location for others, and would return again ourselves.
Staying at this house was like being in a tropical paradise. The home was very comfortable, the landscaping was gorgeous and the animals were fun. Hope to come back.
After a 3-week stay in Honolulu... I traded in the noise and congestion and concrete high-rise landscape
for . . . the complete opposite. A beautiful country cottage high above Hilo -- where peace and tranquility surround you. You've traded in the sound of a thousand cars...for the gentle crowing of roosters.
Animals are a part of Noe's Nest !! Indeed -- Bijou, the friendly cat, and little Kiwi, the dog-- seem to
inhabit the long, beautiful lanai. Kiwi waits to join you for a walk up the quiet country roads.
And Noe's Nest Master bedroom is a . . . .Shangri-La. Nothing less ! You rise . . . smelling the sweet
fragrance of Nora's giant Cattleya orchids on the dining table . . . filling the entire house. From the large
windows by your King-size wicker bed . . . you see the glorious sky at day-break .
Thank you once again..... Nora and Dave- for offering us such beauty.
with very warmest aloha,
