We are located on the lush, tropical side of the big island, just two miles north of the historic whaling town of Hilo. Our home is in a small, upscale neighborhood in the country and borders the old coastal road that winds past streams, waterfalls, and vine-covered bridges.
Honolii Beach is just a short walk down our one-lane road and has a beautiful picnic area with lifeguards, showers, and bathrooms. Honolii is very popular and has consistent waves year-round for surfers and boogie boarders. The freshwater river that empties into the bay has a huge swimming hole and two beautiful waterfalls just upstream.
Hiking, jogging, bikeriding, surfing, swimming, or just kicking back are activities you can do from the vacation cottage without driving anywhere. Our convenient location also makes it simple to visit the many scenic areas around the island.
And remember, one of the friendliest beaches on this side of the island is just a short stroll down the road

Relax and enjoy aloha: One of the friendliest beaches on this side of the island is just a short stroll down the one-lane road.
Stay here and discover aloha.
I teach biology at the University of Hawaii and this is my only rental. It is very important to me that my guests enjoy their stay at my cottage and experience the aloha that I have found on this island.
terre hawkins purchased this cottage in 2002
As owner of the property, I take a personal interest in our guests and the quality of their vacation time in Hilo. The best advertising I have is "word of mouth" from happy guests that have stayed in our only vacation rental.
Have gotten tired of the hotels in Hilo every time we come here, so have started using vrbo to find new places to stay. This one is the best. Very convenient to downtown Hilo, yet away from all the hustle and bustle. There is a nice walk right by the cottage where you can see some waterfalls and just get away. Cottage is well equipped if you want to eat in or just relax. Terre freely gives info about the area and all were spot on. Very glad we found this place. Hope it's available the next time we visit. A no brainer to stay here.
The perfect base for anyone who wants to enjoy the delights of Hilo and surrounding areas. The apartment was equipped with everything we needed, plus Terre loaned us snorkeling equipment as well as telling us about a nearby beach where we could swim with magnificent turtles and fantastic fish. The walk from the apartment down by the local beach and through the rainforest is breathtaking. A wonderful place! We plan on returning.
Terre's cottage is adjacent to her house in a very exclusive neighborhood of Hilo. It is as wonderful as she describes and as others have confirmed. It was neat, clean and well-stocked. Its location is exceptional; a few minutes drive from downtown Hilo (and the excellent farmer's market) and only a 2-block walk to the Ocean and a mar-velous 2-mile (RT) paved walk past a surfer's paradise and thru a virtual rain forest with waterfalls, streams and lush tropical flora. Terre's joie de vivre is an infectious rainbow.
Visitors to the wet side of the Big Island should be forewarned that nocturnal Coqui frogs have become neighbors everywhere in the past several years; they sing and chirp their happiness out of sight, welcoming your sharing paradise with them.
This enchanting, spotless, and roomy one-room bungalow was the perfect home base for exploring Big Island sights. It's less than an hour from Volcanoes Park, and near Akaka Falls. Beautiful Honoli-i Beach is literally down the street, around the corner, less than 5 minutes walk.
It's just north of Hilo, in a quiet residential neighborhood, except for the symphonic frogs, who dazzled us with their evening repertory. There is some light traffic noise from the nearby road, but the overall feeling is tranquil and lush.
Terre had excellent suggestions for places to eat and visit.
The luckiest thing of all - we were there on King Kamehameha Day, June 11 - celebrated with a wonderful local festival with ceremonial rituals and fantastic dancing in many styles.
If you are here on June 11, don't pass this up.
Terre's place was our base for trips to the park. It had everything we needed and was plenty quiet. We sat on the lanai in the evenings for a drink while we sorted through the days photos and e-mails. The frogs reminded us of our trip to Barbados 2 years ago. Very soothing.
We would recommend this spot as a quiet spot away from town and more "Hawaii" than others we stayed at. Terre has great ideas and recommendations and is a great host.
Terre has a wonderful little cottage to spend your vacation in. Yes, there is a road nearby and yes, the frogs can be loud...but that should be overlooked and come anyway! There is a lot to see around the area or you can just sit on the lanai and relax. Terre is a great person and very knowledgeable about the area. Her 2 dogs and 2 cats are sweet animals (I wanted to sneak them in to sleep with me...laughing).
It is fun to sit outside and listen to the frogs at night. I am a light sleeper and had no problem sleeping with them or the little traffic noise. You can also hear the ocean from this cottage.
The neighborhood is very quiet around this place too. WELL worth the stay and you also get to be more IN Hawaii than a hotel!!
Thanks Terre (AND animals...:) )
My vacation rental is located about two miles up the Hamakua Coast , just outside of Hilo town. Our close proximity to Hilo is very convenient for enjoying the amenities the east side of the island has to offer. Honolii Beach is a five-minute walk away and there are multiple attractions within a 15 minute drive such as Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Hawaii Botanical Gardens. Volcano National Park is only 45 minutes away and the cowboy town of Waimea is approximately one hour up the Hamakua Coast.
Other Activities: Kicking back and having a good time
