Spend the same/less & get better place!

Beach access is great, but spend the same or less and get better accommodations elsewhere. Pictures are very outdated. Furniture is stained, dining chairs are torn and stained, carpet is stained in all bedrooms, ladder going up to loft is black with dirt. House was not clean upon our arrival (floors not swept, sand/hair in tub of one bathroom, sand on furniture and rugs, floors not mopped, counters not cleaned) and had to be re-cleaned and still wasn't up to par. I had to mop the floors myself and shake the sand out of the rugs (fun vacation!). We were able to use the extra sheets and blankets to cover the couch and chair/ottoman so that we could sit on them during our stay. We also covered the dining room chairs with towels. They had to sweep food from under the dining table and wipe crumbs off the kitchen counters! Oh, and the DVD is broken in the great room. There are 2 working DVD's in the house that we could find. The only good thing we can say is that the beach is nice and there is nice shopping and some nice restaurants in Gulf Shores. The other family staying with us arrived the night before and weren't able to completely survey the house until the next day. Unfortunately, we chose the home and they didn't feel it was their place to explain the poor condition of it until we got there. If you rent this house, ask for updated pictures. It isn't what you're expecting. Owners did tell us they would refund us their cleaning fee since it was not cleaned but we have since received a letter stating that they are NOT doing that for us.
Owner's Response: We have rented Sand-n-Sanity since 1985 and have never experienced a situation as occurred with the renter posting this review. The renter allowed another family to check in the day before arriving. We contacted that family at noon Sunday and were told that they found it "fantastic". After the renter arrived and complained of sand & crumbs, we sent the cleaning service back as a courtesy. We guarantee we will correct any cleaning issues at check-in but not days later.
There are a lot of allegations made in this review that were never discussed. Two people have played the dvd in the great room recently and told me it works fine. Sand-n-Sanity is not just a rental - it is our vacation home. We work very hard to keep it updated, clean & comfortable. We will do everything possible to see you have the vacation you're hoping for when booking Sand-n-Sanity.
