Duluth House Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

'Cottage on the Point' is located on Lake Superior's grand Park Point beach with five miles of extraordinary sand. This historic home, built in the late 1880's, rumored to be a hunting lodge, is now completely restored. Remodeled and redecorated it is full of old Duluth charm and modern conveniences. The cottage is licensed as a vacation rental by the city of Duluth-permit #PL13-019

The cottage is three miles from the world famous aerial lift bridge and Canal Park activities. It is one and a half miles from the Park Point recreation area with sailing and boat launch facilities. The cottage is located in a residential neighborhood, with private beach access. Step back to a time when the pace was slower and relax in your own private beach cottage.

Park Point offers many wonderful activities and we are prepared to help you enjoy it with four kayaks, one aluminum canoe, two adult life vests and beach mats and towels. Come prepared to enjoy the sun, but if it should rain, you can enjoy the supply of videos, DVD's, games and books perfect for a relaxing vacation.

Don't miss a chance to rent this extraordinary home at a price below the cost of a hotel room or conduminum rental. You can have it all - three large bedrooms, large living room / great hall with gas fireplace, dining room, kitchen, laundry room, front porch, back porch, gas grill and of course the beach - all located in quiet neighborhood. It is the best Duluth has to offer and it is away from the crowds that are found at lakeside hotels and condumiums.

EXTRA BONUS: If you like psychological suspense novels, check out books by award winning author Brian Freeman (bfreemanbooks). Our historic beach cottage is featured in Freeman's third and fourth novels, featuring Jonathan Stride and Serena Dial. The forward reads: 'Much of this novel was conceived and researched in a rental cottage on Park Point in Duluth that bears suspicious similarity to the home now owned by Stride and Serena. Your can actually stay there yourself, or tour the home at cottageonthepoint.' Or just send in a VRBO inquiry now for your dates and see if you can enjoy this historic cottage for your vacation. Please note that this is a peaceful residential neighborhood. Loud parties and excessive drinking or substance use are not welcome.

About Pat Burns

The cottage was purchased as a personal residence. We converted it to a rental in 2005 and continue to give it the loving care it deserves. It is inspected and licensed as a vacation rental, meeting all requirements for your safety, health and comfort. Bill is a lifelong Duluthian and knows this area and the community extremely well. He is a great resource for information on this area as well as, the north shore, BWCA, and the Quetico. We love this area for the beauty and all the activites we enjoy - skiing, kayaking, biking, paddling and wilderness camping.

Pat Burns purchased this house in 1995

Why Pat Burns chose Duluth

We both love Park Point, and live next to the cottage. The beach is peaceful and very quiet. At times we are the only people in our area down there. It is in a residential area and not near public beach areas. The beauty and serenity are so soulful and breathtaking. It is a great place for renewing one's spirit.

What makes this house unique

The cottage is loaded with old world charm - from the carved mahogany pillars to the built in china cabinet and reading nooks by the fireplace. It simply forces a slower pace. The front porch catches cool breezes and a great place to start the morning with a cup of coffee and a good book, while the back porch and deck are perfect as enclosed play area and a relaxing place to grill dinner. We provide four kayaks for use by our guests that allows a paddle on Lake Superior to explore the beauty of the lake. All to give an unforgettable experience and vacation needed in this fast paced world.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Found you on the internet and were completely satified with the reality! We love Duluth; the food, waterfront area, the ships, and a first for this trip - the long walks on the beach of Lake Superior! Thanks for providing this tasteful haven of rest, warmth and relaxation.

Very family friendly

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed with our 2 1/2 year old for three nights at the cottage. Having a toddler with a lot of food allergies make vacations tough. At the cottage, we have a HUGE and comfortable kitchen to make his meals and then walk to the beach to have fun. Pat is a great host and I would recommend the Beach Cottage to anyone.

Thank you for hosting us in your relaxing, beautifully decorated cottage! Our whole family enjoyed all of the reading nooks, the cozy fireplace, and the private beach walks. It made some fond memories for us and we would definitely attempt to come again!

Wonderful, Amazing, Just what we wanted!

  • 5 of 5
My husband, 4 year old son, my parents and I stayed here for a long weekend and it was perfect. The cottage was clean, spacious, and perfectly decorated. The bedrooms were all great sizes, the kitchen and grill were ideal for cooking and the porch was just what we needed in the evenings. My little guy loved the toys and games, they were all hidden away - so no toys just laying out. We had a great time!

Great place to enjoy Park Point and Duluth.

  • 5 of 5
The Cottage on the Point is a great base for a family or group to enjoy the amazing beach on Lake Superior and explore Duluth. The cottage is comfortable and roomy, with a tangible sense of place. Bill and Pat are gracious hosts who respect guests' privacy, yet are fun to chat with when you happen to see them on the property. We have stayed twice and will be back.

Beautiful house and beach

  • 2 of 5
Beautiful house-great beds-lots of extras there including toilet paper, paper towels, garbage bags, towels, blow dryers. You only have the first floor though-which is plenty of space but was not aware when I booked that the owner would have an art studio upstairs and hear her every step and music playing. Looking at the pictures you imagine you are on the porch looking at the beach but this is not so. The front porch with chairs overlooks the highway with a steady stream of cars. Beware do not park in front of the house because from May1-Oct 1(?) you can only park on the other side of the street. The signs for this were no where near the house. In the back yard is the owner's house which is shaped like |-| to get to the beach you walk under thier house. There are kayaks to use which are great and a canoe-but for some reason you have to ask the owners for the paddle and then carry it under their house and through the long path to the beach. It is a beautiful beach with not many people there that we saw.

Owner's Response: We are sorry these guests did not have the wonderful experience so many others have had at our cottage. The access to the beach is private and shared by the cottage and our home which are located on 5.5 lots. This provides a unique opportunity to experience the beautiful beach without the crowds found at public access points. We have paddles located on the back deck of the cottage for guests to access at their leisure without requiring them to contact us. We are sorry these guests did not see them. We will be adding a note to the cottage manual about the street parking restrictions and were dismayed to find out they received a ticket for parking in the summer biking lane. We provide two off street parking spaces for the cottage guests. The road in front of the cottage is a residential city street and not a highway. Because Park Point is the largest sand bar on a fresh water lake, it has only one road running down the middle with houses located on either the bayside of the road or the lake side of the road. The cottage is on the lake side and there is a short walk through the yard and over the sand dunes to the beach. The lower level of the cottage is the rental unit and the upstairs, which has separate private access on the exterior of the home, provides storage for the cottage supplies and an office area for cottage business and a small crafting studio. This area is used only during mid day hours to make sure we do not disturb the quiet morning or evening hours. In ten years of renting the cottage this is the first negative comment we have received on our limited use of this space. We are sorry to find out that our guests felt it was intrusive.

Excellent place to stay for families

  • 5 of 5
I was so impressed with this cottage. It was a wonderful place to stay while on vacation. Our family felt like we were at home, albeit a much nicer home than what we're used to! :-)

The cottage is very elegant and spacious--all three bedrooms are connected to a very large living room. The area rugs are luxurious, and the crockery is very pretty. The home is stocked with soft towels and many extra blankets and pillows. All the beds had duvets, and there were ceiling fans and portable fans in each bedroom (and an extra space heater). There is a gas fireplace, and we used it every day. Right by the fireplace are two super comfy, roomy, and well-lit reading nooks. I wish my home had these! We also appreciated having a washer and dryer.

Another great asset were the extra amenities for children: toys for the house and beach, a portable crib, a high chair, and a step stool in the bathroom. And a huge plus for our tech-heavy family was the wireless Internet!

The cottage is close enough to downtown Duluth to be able to enjoy Canal Park and the pier AND be able to stop back "home" if needed. We also took a day and drove up the North Shore and visited Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse.

The beach and lake are a short walk away from the cottage. Just follow a path and walk over the sand berm. We visited the beach every day and enjoyed looking for shells and making sand castles.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you liked the cottage. We tried to think of all the things we would have wanted in a vacation rental when we were traveling with children. It's the little things that can make so much difference between a vacation being just good and it being great. Thanks for your kind words.
