My family (4 children, 2 sets of grandparents, 1 dog, myself and my husband) spent an amazing week at the Sleeping Bear Lodge. I honestly cannot put in to words how fabulous this week was. The house is more than what is described. The amenities are amazing, you honestly could just show up with some clothes and be completely comfortable. The house is incredibly spacious and comfortable. The kitchen served as our base of operations, we were able to fix delicious meals and use all the incredible things provided in the kitchen (we supplied the food). The house was immaculate, the sheets and blankets were heavenly soft, and the furniture is extremely comfortable.
Everyday was begun on the sandy beach. The kids playing in the sand and swimming, the bigger kids and adults jumping off the dock and swimming toward the sandy beach. We took countless tours around the lake in the boats provided by the owners and wore lifejackets supplied by the owners. Afternoons were spent hiking through the incredible private forest. Nights were spent around a bonfire (wood already cut and gathered), we played music, danced, laughed and listened to the howling of the wolves. The brief rainy moments were spent playing pool inside, watching cable TV on the huge TVs, or reading/listening to the books/audio books provided. I write this review from my office downtown Chicago and one thing I know – I want to go back right now. This morning my 3 year old work up and said she missed the beach. The caretaker and his family are so helpful and friendly. Problems really weren’t encountered, but they were there to answer questions and just give guidance and ideas.
We spotted one bear down the road from the lodge (not on the property). We saw several deer down the road from the lodge. We heard the howling of wolves every night. We spotted ducks, falcons, eagles, and turkeys on the property. And on the trails we saw the tracks of numerous animals, including bear, deer, wolves, and foxes. We fished (with the rods provided by the house) and had some decent sized fish for dinner.
Sleeping Bear Lodge you will always hold a very special place in our memories. Thank you so much for this amazing retreat!
