Overview

Smithwick House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 6 Baths, (Sleeps 12-16)

This spectacular vacation compound on Lake Travis can accommodate groups of families or friends. Two authentic 1850's log cabins offer private bedroom suites while a huge timber-frame building provides central living, dining and a gourmet kitchen designed for multiple cooks, all with lake views.

The 3 historic buildings that make up Moriah have been meticulously restored into a private retreat in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Moriah has been featured in the Austin American Statesman, Country Home Magazine and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

For larger groups, see the adjacent property VRBO #165802.

About The Owner

In 2000 we (two sisters and our families) purchased this property to accommodate our large family gatherings. We had been frustrated over the years with the facilities we had found to accommodate our vacations together. In designing Moriah, we took the best features of the various places we had visited to create a compound specifically for several families to vacation together with ease.

Shortly after we bought Moriah, another sister (one of six sisters, and, yes, we have one brother) bought the adjacent property. Now, between the two properties, there is room for us all to be comfortable even when all 28 show up.

The Owner purchased this house in 2000

Why The Owner chose Smithwick

We chose this location because there are activities for people of all ages. Volleyball, ping pong, swimming, boating, walking in the country, sitting on the porch - no one is ever bored. Located just one hour from Austin, it is easy to get away even for just a weekend.

What makes this house unique

We love the fact that the bedrooms are in buildings so that those who are sleeping aren’t disturbed by the people who are awake - no matter how boisterous they become. The kitchen, optimized for multiple cooks offers two sinks, two dishwashers and two refrigerators. A refrigerator for drinks is located at one of two entries to the kitchen so that the cooks aren’t disrupted every time someone comes to the kitchen for a drink.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wow...what a wonderful place to spend the 4th of July with our family. Moriah was everything we hoped for and more!! This place is amazing and we cannot wait to return. Moriah is as close to heaven as it gets.

WOW!! Unforgettable

  • 5 of 5

We are always trying to find that next WOW place, and this was it. There were 9 of us all adults here for a weekend. Some of us went Jeeping at Hidden Falls and others went into Fredricksburg, so this was great for a central location.

If you want to spend quality time in what one of my friends called Cowboy Dreamland, than this is your spot.

Nancy and Susan were very accommodating. We will be back.

Magical place

  • 5 of 5

My time at this beautiful estate was amazing, and it felt like being home. The rustic furnishings are impeccable and the details impressive, from the railroad tie hooks to the wagon wheel chandelier. I felt transported to another time and location but with all the conveniences and amenities of modern living. Ideal for groups, you will find time to connect with each other, nature and it's a great setting for stimulating creativity, be it writing or crafting. The owner is also flexible, accomodating and responsive. I cannot say enough good things about it. I am already looking forward to my next visit.

Beyond perfect!

  • 5 of 5

I was fortunate to be part of a girls' weekend at Moriah in December and it was truly magical. The photos in the listing are terrific and give a true depiction of the attention to details, the décor and spaces. What the pictures can't possibly convey is the sense of the place when you are actually there. The cluster of the three buildings is like a big bear hug - perfectly spaced for coziness AND privacy. The design is so well thought out - to enable those who want to go to bed early or sleep in to separate from the main lodge but still feeling as though you are part of the hug! We had a yoga session on the beautiful back porch one morning and a music concert on the front porch when two of us flutists held forth playing duets at twilight.

The dual sinks in all of the bathrooms in the cottages as well as plenty of hanging 'hooks' and drawers for toiletries was very thoughtful. Linens were lovely, lighting good everywhere. The whole place - Moriah - lends itself to quality time with family and friends as well as plenty of opportunity for solitary time. Great tableware for memorable meals and room for plenty of cooks in the kitchen. If you want to have the illusion of 'roughing it' in a rustic Texas getaway spot but have no compromises for the softer comforts of a fine hotel this is the place for you.

p.s. Good roads for walking/jogging front the property.

Friends weekend!

  • 5 of 5

Me and 14 friends stayed here for a weekend, and this property exceeded expectations on every level! There was plenty of space to spread out, no one felt cramped at all. Beautiful decor with a very rustic feel, but with updated appliances and fixtures. There's a huge fire pit on the side of the main cabin that can fit 20 people around it, which was great for the chilly evenings. It's very close (about 3 mi) to the Hidden Falls Adventure Park, so we went out there and drove four wheelers and hung out all day, then came back for a nice cookout at the house.

The best part was that you can entertain and have fun in the main cabin, but if people choose to call it a night, the two sleeping cabins are completely separate. The kitchen is huge and there's plenty of room, we easily cooked breakfast and dinner for 15 without any issues. There's a propane grill outside on the pretty patio next to the outdoor dining table as well. Honestly, the pictures don't do it justice, you have to see the place in person to really appreciate how beautiful it is.

Nancy the host is extremely accommodating, and quick with her replies. She made the whole thing a breeze, and we didn't have a single complaint the whole time we stayed. Will return soon hopefully! Thanks, Nancy!

New Years Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed this perfect setting to celebrate New Years together! We especially enjoyed the cozy main house for playing games and the fire pit for toasting s'mores. The property is adorable! The large kitchen is nice for serving meals and is fully equipped with serving pieces (we had 18 for dinner one night). The views are serene and highlight the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Our family will definitely visit Moriah again in the future. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable!

Girls getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Hi! My experience with this property was that of a 20 year college reunion with my sorority sisters. The property was beautiful and well maintained, personal touches everywhere and accommodating for all types of people. All of the cabins were air conditioned and we had no problems with dust as stated in another review. The main house has a loft for younger children if needed. The couches in that room were comfortable and at no time did I feel like there was a lack of cleanliness. The property was extremely clean! Plenty of room to sit inside or outside. Volleyball- board games were even provided. You literally just need to bring yourself and your food. Everything is provided as stated in the write up, plenty of serving dishes, wine glasses etc. The owner was extremely helpful and prompt with follow up emails for inquires about the property. The only issue was the distance of the water. HEB close by, about 15 min. Very enjoyable property!!!
