About the Outer Banks:
There is plenty to do and see on this wonderful barrier island in North Carolina. Visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial, site of the first manned flight, try hang gliding (Yikes!), kite flying and climbing the dunes. Attend a performance of The Lost Colony that tells the story of the first English attempts at settlement in the 'New World'. Go fishing in the ocean or Sound. Play golf at the many nearby courses or tennis at the neighborhood courts.
The Natural Side of the Island:
Try your hand at kayaking around the island or join a Red Wolf Howling Safari at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Take your four-wheeler into the wild area to the North, where the road ends and the wild horses still roam free. Or try windsurfing on the Sound or handgliding at Jockey Ridge, site of the largest natural sand dune on the East Coast.
Explore History:
The Outer Banks. Site of the first English settlement and the first flight. Explore Roanoke Island, site of the mysterious disappearance of the English colony, including Virginia Dare, the first English child born in America. Visit the monument at Kitty Hawk honoring the first powered flight in America over 100 years ago by the Wright Brothers. Or head to Ocracoke where Blackbeard was killed in a fierce fight beginning at dawn on November 22, 1718. And while you're at it ... Some say some of Blackbeard's treasure is still buried on the island.
