This spotless home is located just 10 to 12 miles South of Hilo. It's centralized locale works well regardless if you're heading up the mountain to view the incredible ever changing Volcanoes National Park or down to the Kapoho oceanside where the swimming and snorkeling are some of the best in the islands. Conveniently located close to Pacific Plantation are some really terrific farmer's markets. The Hilo market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the Pahoa market is open every Sunday. These markets are a great source of veggies, fruits and a wonderful assortment of flowers. Just a 10 min. drive away, is Pahoa Village that has the feel of 'Old Hawai'i of yesteryear.' In Pahoa Village are some terrific resturants shops, health food market and banks/ATM.

Notes: We have done our best to provide our 'Pacific Plantation' with all the comforts of home. The yard is completely fenced in with a driveway to park your car, gives you a sense of security. Just outside the gates to the left or right, you have beautiful scenic places to walk. You will have to be sure to take your camera the first time out you won't want to miss the opportunity of the perfect photo op. The feeling of belonging is just overwhelming. Take in Volcano National Park, how often to you get to see an active volcano? Visit the worlds tallest mountain 'Mauna Kea' it measures 32,000 feet (you need a coat for this trip.) We now have 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, this extraordinary facility will give you a great understanding of Hawaiian culture and language, articulate the intriguing link between the secrets of the stars and the ancient path of Hawaii's native culture. Take in the beauty of the lush Hamakua Coast and Waipio Valley.

Kehena Beach: At this dramatic black sands beach is right off the 137 just before Kulani Honua Resort. You will see a small parking area on the ocean side of the road and a few cars. There is no sign marking the path down the bluff and no stairs, but it's not a difficult walk down. Be aware the surf can be deceptively rough and waves crashing on the shore can be dangerous. Always respect the ocean! Dolphins are frequently spotted playing in the beautiful blue water add this to your tropical setting, well it dosen't get much better than this.

Volcano National Park: This is a must and has something for everyone. The caldera and rim of the volcano is spectacular. Drive down the chain of craters road to the end and take a hike to the lava flow. Be sure to take walking shoes, water and a flash light in case you stay until it's dark. According to early Hawai'ian traditions, there was a time in the mysterious past when the air was surrounded with spiritual beings, and a thin veil divided the living from the dead, the natural from the supernatural. It was during that time Pele, goddes of the volcano, came to Hawai'i. Pele is volcanism in all its forms. Her poetic name is Ka wahine 'ai honua, the woman who devours the land. when her molten body moves, the land trembles and the sky is afire with a crimson glow. 'Ae aia la o Pele, there is Pele'

Richardson's State Beach Park- Hilo Area: A nicely protected black sand beach that's good for swimming and snorkeling. Lovely setting with large trees, ponds, picnic tables and showers. Safe for children. Located on the south end of Hilo Bay.

Pacific Plantation was a wonderful place to stay. It's a little out of the way of Hilo, but if you want peace, quiet, and privacy, this is the place. You can find everything you need in Kea'au anyway, 5 minutes drive. On our stay, it rained every night, but we LOVED it because we're from the desert. The frogs sing every night too. The ocean is a short walk away; can't swim in it because of the rocky (lava) shoreline, but you can watch fishermen, enjoy the (powerful) crashing waves, and look for crabs in the rocks. The home and yard were very clean, and the temperature inside was cool w/ open windows and ceiling fans (no need AC). The wireless internet was helpful too for checking email, and checking my activities reservations and flight info online.
I'd stay here again in a heartbeat! Thanks Frances!
