About Marilyn and John Darack

We are two active professionals, failures at retirement, attempting to spend as much time as possible in our beloved New Harbor. Marilyn is a musician and has an active piano teaching studio (thus 'Suite') and John is a retired manufacturer of specialty food seasonings and spices (thus 'Thyme'). Now you know why we call our cottage 'Suite Thyme!'

Marilyn and John Darack purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Marilyn and John Darack chose New Harbor

We discovered New Harbor 38 years ago while on a camping trip to Boothbay. We immediately packed up our gear and moved to a campground in New Harbor. We returned year after year, first camping, then renting cottages, then, finally having our own home. Even after all these years we still marvel at the beauty of New Harbor and still enjoy its fabulous amenities and friendly locals. We constantly meet more and more folks who have had similar experiences. After having explored so much of the Maine coast, we just knew we had stumbled into a very special place. To us there is no more pleasant location on earth. Our view is breathtaking. Fabulous restaurants, galleries, beaches; attractions of many types abound.

What makes this cottage unique

Immense natural beauty, lobsters right off the boat, ever changing surf. Easterly view of islands, working lobstermen, and awesome sunrises make it hard to leave! We find it difficult to tear ourselves away from the property, but with so many attractions and distractions so nearby, we often do just that!

Guestbook comments from the owner

I would recommend this property to anyone. It is well set out and maintained, it has all the things you need and more. The owners are fantastic and make you very welcome. I can recommend going to the local store ‘Riley’s’ and just generally enjoying the local area. Waking up to a view of the sea is just great. The whole family enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage.-written by family from England.

The Ultimate Maine Coast Vacation Experience

  • 5 of 5

From the time we pulled into the driveway to the amazing view & continuing throughout our stay, we knew we found what we were looking for. We wanted to visit the Maine coast & stay right on the rocky ocean shore. The property & view are amazing & provide the ultimate Maine coast experience. The property is located in the quaint, laid back, fishing village of New Harbor. New Harbor is ideally located mid-coast, so access to the tourist attractions to the north & south is very convenient. The house had everything you could need & was very accurately described on the website, which we had relied upon. Sometimes pictures can be deceiving, but I can say that the house & grounds were impeccably maintained.

We did our share of traveling up & down the shore visiting & experiencing the beauties of Maine. However, we really enjoyed just kicking back & relaxing at the house. Withing walking distance is a fully stocked grocery store, a great ice cream shop & a little bakery, all of which we visited on more than one occasion. There are several nice restaurants in & around New Harbor as well. The experience of sitting in the chairs on the front lawn or on the rocks watching the waves and lobster boats going by is relaxing & reflective.

John & Marilyn have thought of everything & we found them to be very gracious & accommodating hosts.

We will very definitely recommend this property to any of our friends & relatives who plan on visiting Maine. We hated to leave & hope to someday return and relive our Maine experience.

A place to call home......

  • 5 of 5

After selling my house near the city, I was looking to experience coastal living. Suite Thyme provided a peaceful place to watch a beautiful New England winter roll in along the shore. Just steps to the water's edge and trails nearby to snow shoe, this quiet setting is perfect for relaxing and taking in nature. I have seen bald eagles nearby and heard the loons calling to each other. Views of the sunrise and of the moonrise on the water are equally spectacular.

The cottage itself is beautifully furnished and fully equipped. With the convenience of a washer and dryer, it made a great fit for my long term needs.

John amd Marilyn made sure snow removal was not an issue. They have been more than kind and helpful throughout my stay.

I feel embraced by the community. The town's people and work force are wonderful. I am now searching for a year round rental in the area. I know clearly now that I must live here and I owe it to Marilyn for opening her heart and (winter) rental to me. This is "the way life should be".

THANK YOU, John and Marilyn.

Better Than a 5-Star Hotel

Better Than a 5-Star Hotel

My husband and I booked our Maine vacation nearly a year before our arrival date and counted the days off the calendar as we looked forward to our first trip to the east coast in over 30 years...we were not disappointed. Everything was as described in the listing...the cottage, the location, and the view were PERFECT! Not only was the cottage well stocked with absolutely everything we needed, but it was the first rental we didn't have to clean before we even smelled clean.

The living quarters are on the top floor, which provides the best view of the ocean, just a few steps away. Don't miss the sunrise, or having that first cup of coffee on the cottage deck. It is absolutely the best part of the day! We loved watching the lobstermen from the rocks as they pulled their traps on a calm day and the waves crashing against the rocks when the ocean was rough.

Marilyn and John have thought of everything. On the counter near the phone were two binders of information about the area and about everything we needed to know about the cottage. It included emergency phone numbers and details about everything from trash pick-up to the whole-house generator that comes on automatically if power is lost during a storm etc. On the coffee table were directions for operating the remotes for the TV, DVR, Stereo, and gas fireplace.

The Cupboard Cafe was the place to go for breakfast...the omelets and sticky buns were to die for. Shaws Lobster Wharf (where scenes from "Message in a Bottle" were filmed) have the best fried clams in the area and is so close you could walk there. Moody's Diner and Deb's Diner were also among our favorite places to eat at VERY reasonable prices.

We plan to make a vacation at Suite Thyme Cottage a yearly tradition and have already booked a two-week stay for next fall. A shopping trip to LL Bean is on the agenda for next year along with lots of other attractions we just didn't have enough time for during our first stay.

Thank you Marilyn and John for the perfect Maine vacation!

A Maine Coast Gem

  • 5 of 5

We found the location superb. The view is spectacular while relaxing on the expansive deck and even better when we venture onto the rocks. With the ocean so close the nights are always cool and the surf lulls us to sleep. Suite Thyme is meticulously maintained and the owners went out of their way to make sure everything was there to make our vacation special. The beds and furniture were all very comfortable which is not always true at rental properties.

We enjoyed both tennis and golf nearby and the grandkids enjoyed kayaking on the Damariscotta River as well as the boat ride to Monhegan Island and a couple of hours of hiking.

We were impressed with the variety of restaurants available. The Damariscotta River Grill was a favorite for a special evening and we liked the Muscongus Bay Lobster for the casual BYOB picnic table lobster dinner with a gorgeous view thrown in. We also liked the Thai restaurant in Damariscotta for something a little different.

When we were out for a drive we found the Wyeth paintings at the Farnsworth Museum outstanding and nearby in Owlshead the Transportation Museum's collection of automobiles one of the best in the country. We even managed to take in the pianist Bob Milne's ragtime performance at the Boothbay Opera House and dinner at the Thistle Inn which is only a block away. All in all one of our best vacations.

A little piece of paradise...

  • 5 of 5

Over the years, I have stayed at many VRBO properties and this is my first review. I found my little piece of paradise at Suite Thyme! The carriage house is located on a beautiful stretch of ocean in a beautiful wooded setting. While there, we followed Marilyn's wonderful travel guide for mid coast Maine. By doing so, I felt we truly maximized our time and were able to experience what the beautiful state of Maine has to offer. Our visit to the cottage by the sea was flawless!

Sweet Time at Suite Thyme!

We spent a wonderful week at the Suite Thyme, located in New Harbor, Maine. It is a cute, well furnished, tastefully set up, 2 bed room, carriage house overlooking the Atlantic. The views of the ocean are fantastic, with amazing sun rise and the moon rise. Cozy place for a great vacation!
