A Dump!

We found several inaccuracies with this listing.
1) “Comfortable and clean beach house” - Immediately upon arriving we saw lots of dust and a very dirty floor. We found guitar picks and empty bags from prior residents as well as dirt and dust under the couch, chairs and beds. The mop in the closet was black with dirt. After we swept we realized the mop was so dirty we were better off not to use it.
Pots and pans and other dishes were greasy and dirty and we had to wash them prior to using them. The oven had crumbs and grease on the bottom.
2) “Recent renovations including tile floors and kitchen cabinets.” – Some of the kitchen cabinets were not in use because the bottom was caved in and molding. It appeared as though there was water damage.
3) “Kitchen, seating for 6” – This is a caption from one of the pictures. There were only four chairs in the kitchen at the table. Although we informed the owner we were a party of 5 we were not informed nor did they provide any additional chairs.
4) Living Room – “comfy seating for 6 people” – Another caption from their ad – there is a couch and two chairs, one of which tilts all the way backward when you sit in it. Even with 2 young children a maximum of 5 people (of someone is willing to sit on the broken chair) can sit in the living room.
5) “2 large picnic tables” – there were no picnic tables in the yard.
6) “Theme: Family children welcome” - The yard was littered with beer bottles (some broken), empty beer cans, cigarette butts, fish hooks and other trash. I picked up a good deal of trash but found more appeared daily.
7) “Outdoor Grill Charcoal” – the grill was gas and was rusted through from oxidation plus the gas tank was empty.
8) “Satellite or Cable” – The TV did not have cable service. When reported to the owner they advised it would be turned on midweek but it never happened. There was a DVD/VCR combo but the TV or cable to connect it was broken. The picture was barely visible. This can be difficult with children especially since playing in the yard is not a real option.
Other issues – The day we arrived we found the shower leaked when it caused the false ceiling tiles to fall and crash on the downstairs bathroom floor. The owner did send some type of handyman the next day (Easter Sunday). After several attempts he did repair the leak by that evening. Unfortunately, we had no way to shower before Easter dinner and the mess from the ceiling crashing in and dirtying the bathroom floor was left to us to handle with the dirty mop.
Various lights throughout the house flickered or did not work at all.
Tiles were broken in the upstairs bathroom.
When contacted about the issues (other than the water leak) the owner said she does not usually rent off season and brought up that she did not charge us “prime” summer rent. However, we paid the going rent for the week we stayed and were not warned to expect anything other than what was listed. The owner did offer to refund our rent minus the cleaning fee if we left on Easter Sunday. However, it being Easter Sunday and having to relocate 5 people and a refrigerator full of groceries on Easter Sunday was really not a feasible option.
On the positive side, the house is close to the ocean as described and large enough to sleep 8.
