Rainbow Ohana is an affordable vacation rental for the adventurous traveler seeking authentic Hawaiian beauty, peace, and serenity. All the comforts of home in a lush tropical setting only .4 miles off the highway but with a feeling of rural space and modest luxury.

Handpainted furniture, tasteful art and decor, this spacious 1 bedroom unit has both modern conveniences and tropical Hawaiian charm. Less than 10 minutes from Kahaluu Beach Park and 15 minutes from Kailua-Kona resort town, our location is ideal for relaxation or sightseeing along the sunny Kona coast. We are actually about 5 minutes north of Kealakekua (in Honalo), making travel to Kona just a little bit faster than it would be from Kealakekua itself.

About Beth Firestein

I fell in love with the Big Island several years ago and in 2007 I had the opportunity to buy a place of my own on the Kona coast. I really enjoy sharing the beauty of my Hawaiian cottage with others. I can't be on the island full-time and sharing this incredible place with you brings me joy. I hope you enjoy your stay as much as I do when I am on the Big Island.

Beth Firestein purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Beth Firestein chose Kealakekua

I love being part of the historical Kona coffee growing area of the island. I can watch the coffee cherries mature over the year from the delicate white coffee flowers to the deep red of ripe coffee cherry ready for harvest. I also enjoy the cooler temperatures at our elevation of 1100 feet above sea level. The cottage is a very comfortable place to stay any time of the year.

What makes this cottage unique

I find such peace and pleasure when I snorkel with the colorful tropical fish and sea turtles at Kahalu'u Beach Park, only 7 minutes from my lovely cottage. I can enjoy gorgeous sunsets from the screened-in lanai and on clear, moonless nights, I can see the Milky Way. I also love eating the bananas and avocados that grow on my property. I can't think of a better place to stay on the Kona coast.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dora and I would like to thank you for a wonderful holiday in Hawaii. The Cottage was exactly as advertised and this was exactly what we were looking for on our trip to the Big Island. It gave us the opportunity to experience Hawaii in a way that felt more like being part of a community rather than just one more tourist in a sea of other tourists. We used it as our base to explore the island and it was always reassuring knowing that we had a lovely comfortable little home to return to after an adventure. Both Kelly and Jeri are wonderful folks to deal with and you should be very pleased with how they relate to your guests. We were so tempted to stay another couple of weeks but then Spring here on Vancouver Island is something we didn't want to miss. Mahalo.

Paradise farm

We spent 12 days in this wonderful place. The house is perfect and equipped as expected. The garden is incredible, papaya, avocado, banana and lime trees along with the rooster and chicken made me feel like I was in a dream. This island is full of activities, everything from the dessert, volcanic trails, rainforest, waterfalls, forests and beaches. It was a wonderful active vacay. We didn't turn the tv on once.... Beth, you will be seeing us again and we will be sending all our loved ones there. We loved it and left with the Aloha spirit!

Already planning another stay at this lovely cottage.

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed at the cottage for 10 days, and we were pretty sad to leave. We were impressed with all the beautiful trees, flowers, and succulents as soon as we pulled up to the driveway. The place is almost completely surrounded with beautiful plants - we felt like we were tucked away in the rainforest, except that we had a view of the ocean of course. When we arrived the house was very clean and we saw that almost all of what we'd need was provided. The size of the cottage is excellent for two people, and we loved the high ceilings. The walk-in closet was great to have. The bed was very comfortable, and we had the best sleep here.

I always carefully read all the reviews before renting a place so I was a little nervous because people mentioned loud birds, roosters and farm workers. I'm usually a light sleeper, but I really thought the birds singing was one of the best features. The birds and roosters weren't very loud at all, and we found them to be relaxing. I asked Beth about the farm workers because someone mentioned it in a review and she assured me that if they did come around they wouldn't be very loud and they were unlikely to be around during the time we were there. We didn't see or hear any workers during our stay. The coffee plants seem far enough away from the cottage that I wouldn't think it'd be an issue. We have no complaints about this cottage. It's definitely one of the best vacation rental experiences we've had.

We'd definitely go back

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks at Rainbow Ohana and it was just as wonderful as others have said. Peaceful, quiet, beautiful. It has the same warm, welcoming feeling as the family cottage where I spent so many summers. It was spotless, exceptionally well equipped (we've stayed at many VRBOs - this was the best equipped by a long-shot). Beth and Jeri were also very accommodating with our awkward arrival and departure times - very much appreciated. We also appreciated Kelly and the fruit deliveries! Everything you need is nearby (I think we ate at Annie's Island Burgers 4 times and had gelato from Gypsea Gelato almost every day!). It was the relaxing, mellow and comfortable vacation we were hoping for. Mahalo Beth, Jeri and Kelly.

Back again for another wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time staying at the Rainbow Ohana and it was just as wonderful and relaxing as the first time. its so peaceful here....surrounded by banana trees, coffee, avocados, and beautiful flowers. The home is as advertised with a fully equipped kitchen, hot shower, very comfortable bed etc...

Not only was Beth (the owner) attentive to our needs, but Jeri (house manager) made sure we were comfortable and Kelly (grounds keeper) kept the property clean and beautiful and supplied us with fresh fruit!

We plan on coming back to the big island again and hope to stay here. Why look for anything else....we found the best place and best deal around! Thanks Beth....

A perfect place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This was Tom and my first visit to Hawaii. When Beth told me she had a house in Hawaii when I mentioned we were talking about going to the Big Island, we had to have detail.

We stayed 10 days and from the moment we walked into the house, to the last moments there, it felt warm and welcoming, almost as if it was our own home on the Big Island.

We would go to bed each evening with a fan blowing on us, and by midnight, we had to pull heavier covers over us to keep off the chill.

When we met people at places like Green Sands and told them were we were staying, each wanted details on the house and what if offered over the private resorts. You cannot beat staying in Rainbow Ohana.

Our trip was made all the more special as Tom proposed to me one late afternoon as we enjoyed Pololu from the beech.

Our stay will always be a magical stay at Rainbow Ohana and we hope to return in the near future.

If you need a place to stay, Rainbow Ohana has everything you need from a place to prepare your own meals, a comfortable bed, washer and dryer, and sunsets that are hard to match.

Thank you Beth for sharing it with us and Jeri making sure all our needs were met.

Mahalo

Hawaiian home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time using VBRO and it won't be our last. The rental process was very easy and we were provided with all the information we needed and more. Beth the owner of the property answered all of our questions in a timely manner. The description, photos where accurate. Jeri, the manager made sure that we were comfortable and the cottage is well maintained. The property is very lush with island plants, birds and animals. The view of the ocean and sunsets and very nice. The cottage has all you need to feel at home. It is quite private and we will certainly use this cottage again when we visit Hawaii. Thank you Beth and Jeri for making our stay on the Kona Coast a memorable time.
