La Mongie Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description
4 Bedroom, 3 Bathroom Home Surrounded By The Very Best Of French Wine And Food
Take a sip
Fine wine, fine food and the occasional croquet tournament are at the heart of things in the Hautes-Pyrénées, France. Not forgetting a blend of French-Basque cultures, ski resorts and vineyards, that make this region a refined taste. From the bastide town of Marciac – hosting an international jazz festival in August and riverside eateries year-round, to neighbouring Recontres’ bull-fighting stage, there is a strong pairing of influences here. A dream for epicures, Maison Manechal’s farmhouse style encompasses all of this – and then some.
Originally built from stone and mud blocks in 1838 functioning as a chai (wine house), this home in Monfaucon village was more concerned with grape vines than family getaways. Now, thanks to the careful restoration efforts of its current hosts, it’s the place for wining and dining of a different kind.
Once you’ve mastered the in-house cooking methods, be ready to try delicious cheeses, the finest foie gras and homemade honey available from the 19th century market at Vic-en-Bigorre, a 15 minute drive across the plains. Though if the home’s historied rooms have you thirsting for grapes of the present day variety, drive 20 minutes to Madiran where working wine houses open their doors to visitors. Should the mountains call, the mighty Pyrenees, only an hour and half’s drive due south, offer en-piste days in winter and breath-taking walks in summer. Or savour the mountains closer to home in Monfaucon, where the ridge-side views stretch across the sunflower fields to reveal an exclusive Pyrenees panorama.
From vine to vessel
Though visitors from afar would once have arrived by horse and cart, nowadays it's best to rely on airbourne methods. Taubes is the nearest airport to the Maison Manechal – only a 40-minute drive away, with Pau airport a little further. Or choose to fly into Toulouse with more regular flights available, which is an hour and 40 minutes from Manechal. A car is essential for accessing this secluded home, and will make navigating the French countryside far easier, especially if you have your heart set on Biarritz beach (an hour and a half drive away).
Full bodied flavour
With a wealth of wood-carved rooms, numerous terraces from which to savour the rolling views and hectares of land to explore, it might be hard choosing where to sample first. A step through the original double front door leads you to the vast and inviting living room with its heritage chandelier and working stone fireplace. Create a dish worth pairing with a robust red in the farmhouse kitchen – traditional cupboards and shelves are filled with a pastoral selection of milk jugs, teapots and crockery. Or venture outside where you’ll find a barbecue and bread oven – or the ‘Pizza Hut’ as the hosts fondly refer to it – to serve up your own feasts en plein air. A day by the pool offering views of the lake and woodland beyond might be the way to pass a languorous day in the sun, but for those thirsty for more sporting pursuits there’s always the gaming gallery, the terraced croquet lawn or the nearby riding school, Ecuries du Manaou.
